[Case of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A with increased cerebrospinal fluid proteins and nerve root hypertrophy].

We report herein a 54-year-old man who first noticed muscle weakness of the hands and legs and hypesthesia of the legs at 20-years-old. Symptoms gradually worsened. Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT 1A) was diagnosed on the basis of a nerve conduction study and PMP22 gene duplication. Increased levels of cerebrospinal fluid proteins were identified and cervical and lumbosacral nerve root hypertrophy was evident on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). CMT 1A with increased CSF proteins and nerve root hypertrophy was carefully evaluated clinically and electrophysiologically to rule out other

Root Resective Procedures: A Case Series of Tooth Hemisection and Bicuspidization with Prosthetic Rehabilitation in Contemporary Dental Practice.

Background/Objective: Root resective procedures are well established tooth-preserving techniques used when pathology is confined to one root of a multirooted tooth or in the furcation area. Although in recent years implant therapy has become a standard approach in many cases, the rising incidence of peri-implantitis has renewed interest in classical conservative treatment alternatives, such as hemisection, root resection and bicuspidization. The aim of this study is to present clinical cases in which hemisection and bicuspidization were performed to maintain compromised molars in function and

Evaluation of calcium hydroxide mixed with propolis by ultrasonic activation as root canal dressing in delayed tooth replantation.

BACKGROUND: In cases of tooth avulsion, in which the neurovascular bundle responsible for nourishing the dental pulp is break, endodontic treatment is necessary before proceeding with tooth replantation. In this process, various substances have been tested in combination with calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 in an attempt to improve its effectiveness. This study aimed to examine the effects of using a mixture of Ca(OH)2 and 10% propolis, with subsequent application of ultrasonic treatment, on the delayed replantation of teeth in rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-four rats underwent a surgical proce

Morphologic changes of the incisive canal and its proximity to maxillary incisor roots after anterior tooth movement.

INTRODUCTION: The objectives were to evaluate the morphologic changes of the incisive canal (IC) and the influence of IC proximity to apical root resorption of maxillary central incisors after anterior tooth movement. METHODS: Pretreatment and posttreatment cone-beam computed tomography images of adults (aged 18-47 years) were retrospectively evaluated. Subjects were divided into control group with minimal incisor movement (n = 32; maxillary incisor tip movement <2 mm) and maximum retraction group (n = 35; maxillary incisor tip movement >4 mm). The shape, direction, morphologic changes of the

Fractographic Analysis of a Split Tooth Presenting Radiographically as a Horizontal Root Fracture in an Unrestored Mandibular Second Molar.

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneously catastrophic fracture of intact unrestored molar teeth is not common. Nevertheless, cracks do occur that progress apically, resulting in the complete splitting of the tooth and root. This report describes a catastrophic fracture that occurred in an unrestored mandibular second molar resulting in a previously unreported combination of a longitudinal and horizontal root fracture, appearing radiographically as a single horizontal root fracture. METHODS: Tooth fragments were examined clinically, stereoscopically, and by scanning electron microscopy. Fractographic analy

Six year follow-up of a root coverage procedure on a lower molar tooth with lateral pedicle flap.

Loss of periodontal attachment and subsequent recession is one of the most common deformities that affects the periodontium. Gingival recession is a muco-gingival defect, which is commonly treated for esthetic and physiologic reasons. Adequate thickness of attached gingiva and root coverage is essential in restored teeth for proper masticatory function as well as for oral hygiene maintenance. Various root coverage procedures Nill have been proposed to correct recession defects, including coronally advanced flap and lateral pedicle flap (LPF). A case report is presented dealing with the treatme

Bone resorption control of tooth eruption and root morphogenesis: Involvement of the receptor activator of NF-κB (RANK).

Activation of the receptor activator of NF-κB (RANK) is a crucial step in osteoclastogenesis. Loss- and gain-of-function mutations in the Rank gene cause, respectively, osteopetrosis and several forms of extensive osteolysis. Tooth and alveolar bone alterations are associated with these pathologies but remain to be better characterized. The aim of the present study was to establish the tooth and alveolar bone phenotype of a transgenic mouse model of RANK over-expression in osteoclast precursors. Early tooth eruption and accelerated tooth root elongation were observed subsequent to an increase

OPN deficiency suppresses appearance of odontoclastic cells and resorption of the tooth root induced by experimental force application.

Osteopontin (OPN) is a major non-collagenous bone matrix protein implicated in the regulation of cell function. Although OPN is rich in the cementum of the tooth, the significance of OPN in this tissue is not understood. Tooth root resorption is the most frequent complication of orthodontic tooth movement (TM). The objective of this study was to examine the pathophysiological role of OPN in cementum of the tooth root. For this purpose, the upper right first molar (M1) in OPN-deficient and wild-type (WT) mice was subjected to mechanical force via 10 gf NiTi coil spring while the left side molar

[Establishment of permanent tooth germ missing animal model and study on root resorption of the corresponding deciduous teeth].

OBJECTIVE: To establish the permanent tooth germ missing animal model for future research on the root resorption of deciduous tooth in the absence of permanent tooth germ. METHODS: The permanent tooth germ missing animal model was established by surgical removal of the permanent tooth buds in a male 11-week-old Beagle dog. Root resorption of the deciduous teeth without permanent successors was observed by taking periapical films periodically, and compared with physiological root resorption. Once the sign of root resorption of the deciduous teeth without permanent successors was detected on rad

Rationale for socket preservation after extraction of a single-rooted tooth when planning for future implant placement.

After tooth extraction, the alveolar ridge will commonly decrease in volume and change morphologically. These changes are usually clinically significant and can make placement of a conventional bridge or an implant-supported crown difficult. If bone resorption is significant enough, then placement of an implant may become extremely challenging. Postextraction maintenance of the alveolar ridge minimizes residual ridge resorption and, thus, allows placement of an implant that satisfies esthetic and functional criteria. Recent advances in bone grafting materials and techniques allow the dentist t

Effects of maxillary molar intrusion on the nasal floor and tooth root using the skeletal anchorage system in dogs.

The skeletal anchorage system (SAS) was developed to provide intraoral absolute anchorage for the intrusion or distalization of molars. The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of remarkable molar intrusion on the tooth root and the maxillary sinus floor. Six adult female beagles with fully erupted dentition were used. Titanium miniplates were implanted bilaterally above the maxillary second premolar root apices using pentobarbital anesthesia. The second premolars were intruded for four or seven months after three months of healing after implantation. Standardized dental radiographs

Unusual migration of a tooth root into the ethmoid sinus after dental extraction: a case report and literature review.

Iatrogenic foreign bodies of dental origin are rare and frequently involve the maxillary sinuses. We report an unusual case of tooth-root migration into the ethmoid sinus after dental extraction. A 54-year-old woman with a history of maxillary left molar extraction 6 months prior presented with symptoms of left nasal obstruction, green malodorous nasal discharge, hyposmia, and left-sided facial pressure for 3 months. She was diagnosed with unilateral sinusitis, and nasal endoscopy revealed severe left middle meatus edema with thick pus discharge. Computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses re

Successful regenerative endodontic treatment in a tooth with incomplete root apex and posttreatment apical periodontitis: A case report.

This case report describes the procedure and outcome of regenerative endodontic treatment (RET) in a tooth with incomplete root apex and posttreatment apical periodontitis. A 44-year-old patient was referred to the endodontist because of a periapical lesion on tooth #21 and a recent episode of acute periapical abscess. On clinical and radiographic examination, this tooth presented with tenderness to percussion and palpation, periapical radiolucent lesion, external apical resorption, and incomplete apex formation. After coronal access, the filling material was removed, and the canal was gently
