Functional analysis of the human pro-opiomelanocortin promoter in the small cell lung carcinoma cell line DMS-79.

DMS-79 is a human cell line derived from a small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC), which expresses the pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) gene. We took it as a model in which to study the mechanism of POMC gene expression in these tumors: precursor processing is altered and gene expression is essentially unresponsive to glucocorticoids. POMC gene structure appeared normal by Southern blot analysis, indicating that gene rearrangement was not responsible for its expression in DMS-79. Indeed, using transient expression of human POMC-luciferase fusion genes in DMS-79, we showed that (1) the normal human POMC p

Adult sexual risk behavior in a Canadian sample of two-spirit, trans, and non-binary survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

BACKGROUND: Research on the impacts of CSA on survivors' sexual outcomes as adults has found an increase in sexual risk behaviors, including earlier sexual debut, greater involvement in transactional sex, and having sex under the influence of alcohol/drugs, among others. However, the impact of CSA on adult sexual risk behaviors in two-spirit, trans, and non-binary (2STNB) individuals has not been investigated. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this investigation was to determine the impact of CSA on sexual risk as measured through a composite instrument in a sample of Canadian 2STNB adults and to identi

Association of Sexualized Drug Use Patterns with HIV/STI Transmission Risk in an Internet Sample of Men Who Have Sex with Men from Seven European Countries.

We estimated the prevalence of overall sexualized drug use (SDU) and of chemsex in particular, assessed patterns of drug use, and identified subpopulations of men who have sex with men (MSM) where SDU and chemsex are more frequent. Using data from an online survey of 9407 MSM recruited during 2016 in 7 European countries, we calculated the proportion of participants who reported SDU and chemsex (mephedrone, methamphetamine, and/or GHB/GBL) in the last 12 months. We grouped the different drug-use combinations in patterns and described sexual risk behaviors, sexually transmitted infections (STI)

Multilevel Factors Shaping Awareness of and Attitudes Toward Pre-exposure Prophylaxis for HIV Prevention among Criminal Justice-Involved Women.

Although pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a key tool in HIV prevention efforts, little is known about PrEP as a prevention strategy for criminal justice-involved (CJI) women. The purpose of this study was to examine multilevel factors shaping PrEP awareness and acceptability among CJI women. Between January 2017 and December 2017, we conducted 52 interviews with CJI women at high risk for HIV and stakeholders from the criminal justice (CJ) and public health (PH) systems. Interviews explored awareness of PrEP and the multilevel factors shaping PrEP acceptability. Data were analyzed using indu

Behaviors Associated With a Risk of HIV Transmission From HIV-Positive Street Youth to Non-Street Youth in Ukraine.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the extent to which HIV-infected street youth (living part or full time on the streets) exhibit behaviors associated with HIV transmission in their interactions with youth not living on the streets ("non-street youth"). We aimed to determine prevalences and predictors of such "bridging behaviors": inconsistent condom use and needle sharing between HIV-positive street youth and non-street youth. METHODS: A total of 171 street youth in 3 Ukrainian cites were identified as HIV infected after testing of eligible participants aged 15 to 24 years after random selec

Deep Neural Networks Applied to Stock Market Sentiment Analysis.

The volume of data is growing exponentially and becoming more valuable to organizations that collect it, from e-commerce data, shipping, audio and video logs, text messages, internet search queries, stock market activity, financial transactions, the Internet of Things, and various other sources. The major challenges are related with the way to extract insights from such a rich data environment and whether Deep Learning can be successful with Big Data. To get some insight on these topics, social network data are employed as a case study on how sentiments can affect decisions in stock market env

Association of Traumatic Brain Injury With and Without Loss of Consciousness With Neuropathologic Outcomes in Community-Dwelling Older Persons.

IMPORTANCE: A history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been considered a risk factor for Alzheimer dementia. However, the specific association of TBI, even without loss of consciousness (LOC), with pathologic findings that underlie Alzheimer dementia, including Alzheimer disease (AD), non-AD neurodegenerative, and vascular pathologic findings, remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between TBI with and without LOC and neuropathologic findings in community-based cohorts. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional analysis used neuropathologic data from 1689 par

The interplay of legal norms in regulating digital platform mergers: comparative insights from China, ASEAN, and the European Union with policy implications for Thailand.

The rise of digital platforms has disrupted global markets by creating data-driven business models and strong network effects, challenging the normative structures of traditional merger control frameworks. These technological dynamics have increased the risk of killer acquisitions, where dominant firms absorb innovative start-ups before they evolve into effective competitors. In many emerging economies, the institutional behavior and legal norms underlying merger notification systems rely heavily on traditional turnover thresholds and price-based assessment tools, failing to capture early-stag

Proteomic analysis of brain and spinal cord tissue reveals distinct immune and mitochondrial processes between human and mouse ALS models.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease resulting in the progressive loss of motor neurons in the brain and spine. More than 95% of cases are pathologically characterized by the cytoplasmic accumulation of hyperphosphorylated and ubiquitinated transactive response DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43). Multiple mouse models with TDP-43 accumulation have been developed, however, whether they recapitulate molecular features of ALS pathology is unclear. Given the lack of curative treatment for ALS, there is an urgent need to identify the precise biological processes con

A survey study to assess stress and coping during medical education in a Jordanian university.

Medical education's rigorous demands are known to cause significant stress among students. The study investigated how students evaluate stressors and apply coping strategies to handle perceived stress and examined how these processes relate to sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics. The study was guided by the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping (TMSC), and employed an online cross-sectional survey targeting medical students at a Jordanian university (Yarmouk University). The questionnaire covered mental health, including perceived stress, stressors, and coping mechanisms, and als

Building on Self-Determination Theory to Unravel the Motivational Drivers of Nurses and Rehabilitation Therapists in a Moroccan University Hospital: A Qualitative Study.

Background: Nurses' motivation is essential for ensuring the quality of care and workforce retention. Understanding the underlying psychological mechanisms is essential, particularly through Self-Determination Theory (SDT). This approach clarifies how work environments influence work engagement and performance. Existing research has explored SDT in various contexts. However, little is known about how contextual and organizational factors specifically impact nurses' motivation in low- and middle-income countries such as Morocco. This study contributes to addressing this gap. Objectives: This st

"My childhood affected my ability to be resilient in both good and bad ways": A mixed methods examination on the links between adverse childhood experiences, resilience, and transactional sex among young South African women.

BACKGROUND: South African women are disproportionately impacted by HIV. Among these women, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are common and have been linked to HIV risk behaviors, including transactional sex (TS). Resilience-or multi-level processes related to overcoming adversity-provides a strengths-based lens that may buffer effects between ACEs and TS. METHODS: We conducted a convergent mixed methods study among women aged 18-25 years in Mpumalanga, South Africa. We used logistic regression to assess the association between ACEs and TS; and tested moderation effects of five resilience

Neuropsychiatric symptoms and progression to pathologically confirmed Alzheimer's disease.

Whether or not neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) in advance of dementia are associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and/or other neurodegenerative dementias remains to be determined. The mild behavioural impairment (MBI) construct selects persons with NPS that are later-life emergent and persistent to identify a high-risk group for cognitive decline and incident dementia. Here, in older adults without dementia at baseline, we examined whether post-mortem AD and other neurodegenerative pathologies were associated with MBI in the 5 years before death. Actor and Partner Effects of Dyadic Coping on Stress Among Hemodialysis Patients and Spouses.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study examined the interdependence among dyadic coping, self-efficacy, and stress in Chinese hemodialysis patients and their spouses using the actor-partner interdependence model. BACKGROUND: End-stage kidney disease creates major psychological challenges for both patients and their spouses. The systemic transactional model views coping as a shared, dyadic process between partners. However, the specific actor and partner effects of dyadic coping on illness-related stress in hemodialysis couples remain understudied. DESIGN: A cross-sectional correlational design was

How to cope with Long COVID - A qualitative interview study on stressors and coping strategies of people affected by long-term consequences of COVID-19.

Long COVID, a multi-system-disease characterized by persistent somatic and mental symptoms following a SARS-CoV-2 infection, can severely impair health and quality of life of those affected. In the absence of adequate therapeutic approaches and a fragmented care landscape, our focus is on identifying individual stressors, the resulting needs and strategies people use to cope with the ongoing burden of the disease and its long-term stressors. This qualitative interview study is part of a pilot multicenter study addressing psychosocial needs in patients with Long COVID. The surveyed sample (n =

Determinants of sexually transmitted infections among adolescent girls and young women in artisanal and small-scale mining communities of Uganda.

BACKGROUND: The artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector has become an important employer in mineral rich countries of sub Saharan Africa where women constitute up to half of the labour force. However, gender and socio-economic marginalization negatively impact the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) of the adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) who work in the ASM sector. Despite the growing literature on adolescents' SRH, there is a paucity of literature on the SRH of this last mile population. This paper fills this gap in the literature by examining the prevalence and determinants of
