Bladder perforation as a complication of transurethral resection of bladder tumors: the predictors, management, and its impact in a series of 1570 at a tertiary urology institute.

OBJECTIVES: To report the incidence, predictors, the impact of bladder perforation (BP), and our protocol of management in patients who underwent trans-urethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT). METHODS: This is a retrospective study, between 2006 and 2020, on patients who underwent TURBT for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Bladder perforation was defined as any full thickness resection of the bladder wall. Bladder perforations were managed based on their severity and type. Small BP with no or mild symptoms were managed with prolongation of urethral catheters. Those with signifi

[One-stage transurethral resection of the urinary bladder and the prostate in patients with superficial cancer of the urinary bladder combined with benign prostatic hyperplasia].

Combination of urinary bladder cancer (UBC) with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a prognostically unfavourable factor. To assess clinical efficacy of one-stage transurethral resection of UBC and BPH in combination with adjuvant immunotherapy, we examined 181 patients with UBC stage Tis, Ta-T1 and BTH. All the patients have undergone one- and two-stage endoscopic operations. TUR of the urinary bladder and the prostate was made in 87 patients. Stage-by-stage TUR of the urinary bladder and TUR of the prostate were made in 94 controls. We conducted postoperative immunotherapy with BCG vaccin

Improving the quality of transurethral resection of bladder tumour (TURBT) operative notes following the European Association of Urology guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Transurethral resection of bladder tumour (TURBT) is the gold standard for diagnosing and risk-stratifying bladder cancer. Accurate and comprehensive operative documentation is critical for ensuring effective patient management. The European Association of Urology (EAU) guidelines provide a framework for TURBT documentation, including tumour characteristics, procedural details, and complications. However, adherence to these guidelines varies, necessitating quality improvement initiatives. AIMS: This study aimed to assess the quality of TURBT operative notes at a single institution

Photodynamic diagnosis-assisted transurethral resection of bladder tumor for high-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer improves intravesical recurrence-free survival (BRIGHT study).

OBJECTIVES: In a primary analysis of data from the BRIGHT study (UMIN000035712), photodynamic diagnosis-assisted transurethral resection of bladder tumor (PDD-TURBT) using oral 5-aminolevulinic acid hydrochloride reduced residual tumors in high-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of PDD-TURBT for intravesical recurrence after a second transurethral resection for high-risk NMIBC. METHODS: High-risk NMIBC patients initially treated with PDD-TURBT (PDD group) were prospectively registered between 2018 and 2020. High-risk patients with NMIBC who

Repeat transurethral resection and contemporary oncologic outcomes among patients with non-muscle invasive urothelial carcinoma of the bladder.

PURPOSE: Repeat transurethral resection (re-TURBT) is recommended for all patients with high-risk bladder cancer to improve staging and oncologic outcomes. However, contemporary evidence on the role of re-TURBT is lacking. We therefore examined the contemporary rates of upstaging at re-TURBT and the association of re-TURBT with disease recurrence and progression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified patients with an incident diagnosis of high-grade Ta, low-grade T1 and high-grade T1 urothelial carcinoma of the bladder between 2010 and 2022. The association of re-TURBT with disease recurrence

Older Age Does Not Have an Impact on Postoperative Complication Risk Following Transurethral Resection of the Bladder Tumor.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The incidence of bladder cancer has been increasing within the aging population. Transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) is the first-line treatment for bladder cancer, serving both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. In this study, we aimed to investigate the incidence and predictors of postoperative complications following TURBT in a general hospital with a high proportion of older patients. METHODS: We analyzed 141 Japanese patients retrospectively who had undergone TURBT for clinically diagnosed bladder cancer between January 2018 and December 2023. Postop

Risk Factors for Bladder Neck Contracture following Transurethral Resection of the Prostate in Patients with Benign Prostatic Enlargement.

INTRODUCTION: Benign prostatic enlargement (BPE) and lower urinary tract symptoms present challenges in aging men, often addressed through transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). Despite technological advancements, bladder neck contracture (BNC) remains a concern. This study explores predictors, including comorbidities, influencing BNC after TURP. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study at Changhua Christian Hospital analyzed 2041 BPE patients undergoing bipolar TURP. Preoperative urinary catheterization and resection speed were categorized. Patient data included demographics, comorbidi

Perioperative outcomes of transurethral resection for t1 bladder tumors: quality evaluation based on patient, tumor and surgeon criteria.

INTRODUCTION: Transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) is a fundamental but challenging step in the diagnosis and treatment of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). The first- and second-look TURBT are central in the management of T1 tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients treated with TURBT for T1 urothelial cell carcinoma (UCC) of the bladder in one academic institution between 2007 and 2017. Quality of TURBT was evaluated based on the presence/absence of muscle on pathology report, the presence/absence of residual tumor on the second look and t

Relationship between post-void residual urine volume, preoperative pyuria and intravesical recurrence after transurethral resection of bladder carcinoma.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the relationship between residual urine volume, pyuria and bladder carcinoma recurrence. METHODS: The clinical data of 305 patients who had post-void residual urine volume measured and preoperative pyuria were retrospectively collected. The patients were classified into three risk groups based on the presence of residual urine and pyuria: good (negative residual urine and pyuria), intermediate (positive residual urine or pyuria) and poor (positive residual urine and pyuria). Predictive factors for intravesical recurrence-free survival were statistically analyzed using

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in follow-up of superficial urinary bladder carcinoma after transurethral resection: initial experience.

UNLABELLED: What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? Diffusion-weighted (DW) MRI is a non-invasive technique measuring the microscopic mobility of water molecules in the tissues without contrast administration. It provides information on perfusion and diffusion simultaneously in any organ, so it can be used to differentiate normal and abnormal tissue structure, and it might help in the characterization of various abnormalities. In recent years, DW-MRI has been applied in the evaluation of urinary tract lesions, such as malignant renal, prostatic and bladder tumours; however, i

Office-based transurethral resection of multiple bladder tumors using blue dye-mixed local anesthesia: a descriptive cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Hospitalization and general anesthesia to perform transurethral resection of bladder tumors (BTs) may not be necessary for small recurrent BTs. We developed a new outpatient procedure. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with recurrent small tumors who had previously undergone transurethral resection of BTs for low-grade, noninvasive BTs were eligible for this new procedure. Between July 2005 and 2007, 21 surgeries were performed on 11 patients. The patients' mean age was 65.6 years. The bladder was dilated with CO(2) using a 15.5F flexible cystoscope. Blue dye-mixed local anesthetic (2

Spontaneous remission of untreated primary amyloidosis of the bladder after transurethral resection biopsy: a case report and literature review.

We herein present a case involving a 23-year-old woman with gross hematuria. Cystoscopy revealed abnormal areas of the mucosa along the anterior and posterior bladder walls. These abnormalities were suspicious for neoplasia; however, a diagnosis was not established by subsequent biopsy. The patient underwent transurethral resection biopsy in which an isolated lesion along the anterior wall was completely resected and the others were left untreated. Pathologic examination and special staining led to a diagnosis of amyloidosis, and the patient elected to undergo transurethral surgery 1 month lat
