The microhabitats in which hosts live can potentially influence the ability and success of parasites in finding and infecting these hosts. The infection dynamics of both digenetic trematode parasites and a nematode parasite (Daubaylia potomaca) infecting a pulmonate snail, Helisoma anceps , were observed in a small North Carolina lake using 3 different classifications of substratum type based on percent coverage by leaves and debris. There were no differences in snail site occupancy or density between substratum types, but small-scale differences in microhabitat impacted parasite prevalence an

Four freshwater pulmonate species (Lymnaea ovata, L. stagnalis, Physa acuta, Planorbis leucostoma) were living in several watercress beds known for their relationships with human cases of fasciolosis, whereas L. truncatula was never found. The aims of these studies were to determine the prevalence of natural infections with Fasciola hepatica in snails and to verify if these species might ensure the full larval development of this trematode (with cercarial shedding) when they were experimentally subjected to F. hepatica only, or to co-infections with an other trematode species. In the southeastern USA, catfish aquaculture is burdened by predation from piscivorous birds and the digenetic trematodes they carry. In addition to cultured ictalurid fish, other forage or incidental fish species inhabit catfish production ponds. Of these, the inland silverside Menidia beryllina was recently found to harbor larval metacercariae of several trematode species. Three species of metacercariae were reported, two of which represent the first morphological descriptions of an Austrodiplostomum sp. and Bolbophorus sp. metacercaria, respectively. A total of 15 silversides were collected

BACKGROUND: Snails are essential for the transmission and maintenance of schistosomiasis in endemic areas, as they serve as intermediate hosts for schistosome parasites. A clear understanding of the snail species present, their local distribution and infection status is therefore a prerequisite for effective control of schistosomiasis. The purpose of this study was to establish the infection status and distribution of Schistosoma mansoni in snails in the Gombe area along the shores of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania, using both detection of cercarial shedding and molecular approaches.

The results of investigation of leukocyte morphology and leukocyte contents of blood and caecum depending on the trematode Quinqueserialis quinqueserialis invasion rate in muskrats from natural population are given. At low trematode invasion rates, there was observed systemic activation of lymphopoiesis and neutrophil granulocytopoiesis with a decrease in the monocyte-miacrophage response in caecum (trematodelocalization organ). At the same time, under high invasion rates, there was detected induction of T cell suppressor activity and the absence of a granulocyte response in the tissues under

The utility of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to determine the sensitization against the trematode Fasciola hepatica in horses from an endemic area (NW Spain) was assessed. Blood samples were collected from 536 horses and tested against a 2.9-kDa recombinant surface protein (FhrAPS) to estimate the presence of IgG antibodies. Data were analysed regarding several intrinsic (age, gender and breed) and extrinsic factors (aptitude and housing). The farm size (number of horses/farm) was also considered. Sixty percent (95% CI 56, 64) of the horses were positive to the FhrAPS-ELISA, with a sign

Infections of parasitic digenean trematode metacercariae may lead to a visually observable syndrome in fish commonly called black spot disease. While black spot has been noted from various locations throughout North America, patterns in prevalence across the continent remain unknown. Funding to investigate continental-wide prevalence of low-mortality parasitic infections represents a barrier to such studies. I utilize iNaturalist.org's photograph database to examine fish for signs of black spot infections across North America. Fish targeted include blacknose dace, creek chub, chubs (Nocomis sp

This study has evaluated the parasitic fauna of 79 pearl cichlids (Geophagus brasiliensis) from the estuary of Patos Lagoon (31° 57' S and 52° 06' W), Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, during the months of May and June in 2011 and 2012. All the hosts analyzed were infected with at least one species of parasite. A total of eleven metazoa were identified in 459 specimens collected. The trematode Austrodiplostomum compactum (34.2%) and ergasilids Ergasilus lizae (32.9%) and Gauchergasilus lizae (32.9%) were the most prevalent species. The trematodes Thometrema overstreeti and Posthodiplostomum sp. had s

BACKGROUND: Over the past few decades, children from the south eastern regions of India presented with anterior chamber angle granulomas and/or subconjunctival granulomas or a retro corneal membrane with nodules at the advancing edge. These lesions were initially considered as tuberculous in origin and were referred as "conglomerate tubercles" for several years. Subsequent investigations identified the true etiology as trematode eye disease.
PURPOSE: To analyze the epidemiological, geographical, and clinical characteristics of pediatric patients diagnosed with ocular granuloma caused by trema

The Blue-winged Teal (Spatula discors) is known for engaging in long-distance North-South migrations and back in the Americas with Cuba being an important wintering ground. Teals serve as hosts for a wide range of parasite species that can be "discharged" at each end of the migration route. Here, we explore for the first time the diversity of trematodes that the Blue-winged Teal may be introducing to -or exporting from- Cuba. We found 15 digenean parasites in 65 sampled teals of which 13 represent first reports for Cuba with one species (Echinostoma revolutum) of zoonotic importance. Overall p

Helminths include both parasitic nematodes (roundworms) and platyhelminths (trematode and cestode flatworms) that are abundant, and are of clinical importance. The genetic characterization of parasitic flatworms using advanced molecular tools is central to the diagnosis and control of infections. Although the nuclear genome houses suitable genetic markers (e.g., in ribosomal (r) DNA) for species identification and molecular characterization, the mitochondrial (mt) genome consistently provides a rich source of novel markers for informative systematics and epidemiological studies. Opisthorchis viverrini is a food borne trematode, important because of the sheer numbers of people infected and its serious morbidities such as hepatobiliary diseases and cholangiocarcinoma (CHCA). Although infections are identified throughout Southeast Asia, the epi-center is northeast Thailand, where high prevalence coexists with a high incidence of CHCA. In this review, we present the basic population features and the factors influencing transmission between the different hosts.

Clonorchiasis and opisthorchiasis are snail-transmitted trematode infections. The disease is endemic in many parts of Asia. Local case reports have been predominantly in Chinese with a history of travel to endemic countries. Thus far, 20 cases of liver fluke infestation have been reported in this country. This report presents another two cases of clonorchiasis and a case of opisthorchiasis. We also briefly review pertinent aspects of the disease.

Platynosomosis is a parasitic disease of cats and other animal species, caused by trematodes of the genus Platynosomum. These flukes can infect the liver parenchyma, biliary ducts, and gallbladder. In cats, this parasite is most commonly associated with inapparent infections; however, clinical infections with cholangiohepatitis have also been described. Platynosomum spp. are also related to the development of cholangiocarcinoma. Here, we describe 6 cases of cats parasitized by Platynosomum illiciens. Four of these cats were also infected with feline leukemia virus; 5 were parasitized with Spir

Praziquantel, a broad-spectrum anthelmintic developed by E. Merck and Bayer AG in Germany in the early 1970s, was synthesized in the People's Republic of China in 1977 and given the Chinese name Pyquiton. After a series of pharmacological and toxicological studies in China, praziquantel was released for clinical use in 1978. The drug is now available for treatment of human schistosome and other trematode infections as well as the treatment of cestode infections including cysticercosis. However, much of the clinical work has been published in Chinese journals that may not be universally familia

We examined 131 European badgers Meles meles (Linnaeus, 1758) from 67 localities in central Germany for the presence of the cranial trematode Troglotrema acutum, as previous studies based on museum skulls might have underestimated the prevalence of the parasite in this host. We detected the flatworm in only three individuals that originated from the Rhoen Mountains (Thurigina and Bavaria). While the cranium of one host individual showed the lesions and the sponge-like widening of certain regions of the skullcap that are typical of a T. acutum infection, the skulls of the two remaining badgers

BACKGROUND: Identification of freshwater snails and possible trematodes transmission sites are essential to continue monitoring the potential for disease outbreaks in areas with a history of parasitic infections. We aimed to search some areas in the margin of the Caspian Sea, northern Iran to identify the snail fauna of this area and verify the contamination of vector snails.
METHODS: More than 5,308 snails from 51 diverse and permanent habitats were studied from April 2019 to October 2021. Snails were collected randomly and identified using shell morphology. Trematode infection in snails was

BACKGROUND: Echinostoma caproni is an intestinal trematode extensively used as experimental model for the study of factors that determine the course of intestinal helminth infections, since this markedly depends on the host species. Although the host-dependent mechanisms for either chronic establishment or early parasite rejection have been broadly studied, little is known regarding the parasite response against different host environments.
METHODS: To identify host-dependent differentially expressed proteins, a comparative proteomic analysis of the excretory/secretory products released from

Species of Lymnaeidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda) are important intermediate hosts of major parasites some of which are responsible for zoonosis worldwide. Particularly liver and rumen flukes impact livestock production with increasing costs due to flukicide treatments. In Europe, a single snail species, Galba trunctaula, is considered as responsible for the transmission of Fasciola hepatica and Calicophoron daubneyi, two trematode species with almost identical transmission cycles. However, the occurrence of a second cryptic and largely overlooked Galba species in Europe raises questions about the

The East Asian region has seen the first discovery of trematodes of the genus Psilotrema in the muskrat Ondatra zibethicus. When studying the morphology of the trematodes, two morphotypes were identified among individuals of Psilotrema spp., the differences between which at the morphological level are equivalent to those between species. The affiliation of one of these morphotypes with the bird parasite Psilotrema limosum was established based on partial sequences of genes coding for 28S ribosomal RNA, nad1, and cox1 mitochondrial DNA. Based on the analysis of these three markers, we classifie
