The Hepatic Phase of Fascioliasis Complicated with Liver Bleeding: Presentation of Three Cases.

Bleeding is a very rare complication of Fasciola species (F. hepatica or F. gigantica) infection. We present here three cases of subcapsular liver bleeding caused by the hepatic phase of Fasciola spp. infection in patients, two of whom were women, aged 22, 66, and 84 years in Diyarbakir Province, southeastern Turkey. They had symptoms of right upper quadrant pain (n = 3), nausea (n = 1), and vomiting (n = 2) for periods ranging from 6 hours to 15 days. All patients with clinical presentations ranging from moderate abdominal pain to hypovolemic shock and ischemic hepatitis were improved with su

Hepatic Fascioliasis Masquerading as Acute Appendicitis in a Child: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Fascioliasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by Fasciola species that can present with nonspecific abdominal symptoms and mimic surgical emergencies. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 12-year-old Ethiopian boy who presented with right-sided abdominal pain, fever, and marked eosinophilia and was initially suspected to have acute appendicitis. Diagnostic laparoscopy revealed hepatic rather than appendiceal pathology. Imaging demonstrated subcapsular hepatic tracks, and serologic testing confirmed Fasciola species infection (most probably Fasciola gigantica in the Ethiopian conte

Hepatic eosinophilic pseudotumor due to Fasciola hepatica infection mimicking intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Hepatic eosinophilic pseudotumor (HEPT) is a rare condition that mimics malignant hepatic tumors, posing significant diagnostic challenges. This case report highlights the importance of considering parasitic infections like Fasciola hepatica (F. hepatica) in the differential diagnosis of hepatic masses, especially in endemic regions, to prevent unnecessary interventions. CASE SUMMARY: A 40-year-old female presented with a 1-month history of epigastric pain and significant weight loss. Imaging revealed a hepatic mass, initially misdiagnosed as intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. Labor

Paragonimiasis Misdiagnosed as Pulmonary Tuberculosis: A Case Report.

Paragonimiasis is a zoonosis caused by the ingestion of raw or undercooked crustaceans parasitized with metacercaria of Paragonimus spp. In Peru, Cajamarca is considered an endemic region for paragonimiasis. A 29-year-old man from the department of San Martín, Peru presented with a three-year history of cough, chest pain, fever, and hemoptysis. Treatment for tuberculosis (TB) was initiated even with negative results for sputum acid-fast bacillus (AFB), due to the patient's clinical characteristics and the high prevalence of the condition in the region. After eight months, due to the lack of an

Human Cases of Fascioliasis in Fujian Province, China.

Fascioliasis is a foodborne zoonotic parasitic disease. We report 4 cases occurring in the same family, in whom diagnosis of acute fascioliasis was established after series of tests. One case was hospitalized with fever, eosinophilia, and hepatic lesions. MRI showed hypodense changes in both liver lobes. The remaining 3 cases presented with the symptom of stomachache only. Stool analysis was positive for Fasciola eggs in 2 adult patients. The immunological test and molecular identification of eggs were confirmed at the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases, Chinese Center for Disease Contro

[A case of Fasciola hepatica mimicking sepsis without eosinophilia].

Fasciolosis is a rare cause of hepatobiliary system infections and caused by the trematode Fasciola hepatica. It primarily infects sheeps or goats, and humans are accidental hosts. On laboratory findings, marked eosinophilia is present in most of the cases. Here, we report a case of fasciolosis without eosinophilia who was presented as sepsis and responded to therapy in second dose of triclabendazole. Sepsis like clinical presentation has been reported in few cases. Forty-eight year old female patient presented with high fever, abdominal pain, hypotension and tachycardia. The patient was consi

Systemic vasculitis associated with Fasciola hepatica infection.

We report the case of a 50-year-old man who presented with systemic vasculitis associated with Fasciola hepatica infection. The patient presented with severe skin, kidney, spleen, ophthalmic, and neurological compromise. An immunological examination for primary vasculitis was negative and other infections were discounted by microbiological and serological analyses. The patient was treated with steroids without clinical response. The Fasciola hepatica infection was confirmed by the presence of specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) serum antibodies detected by a quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorben

In Vitro Effects of Vanadate Erbium/Silver Oxide (ErVO4/AgO) and Vanadate Iron/Silver Oxide (FeVO4/AgO) Nanoparticles on the Adult of Fasciola hepatica.

Fascioliasis is a common hepatic parasitic disease that is caused by Fasciola, resulting in significant economic losses by reducing production and consigning viscera in animals. Currently, there is little research regarding the impact of chemical compounds on the ultrastructure and motility of adult F. hepatica. The present study aims to assess the effect of Vanadate erbium/silver oxide (ErVO4/AgO) and Vanadate iron/silver oxide (FeVO4/AgO) nanoparticles against liver fluke F. hepatica, in vitro assay. Fasciola hepatica adult worms were collected from the livers and gallbladders of sheep and g

An unusual cause of graft loss in pediatric liver transplant recipient-Fasciola hepatica.

Fascioliasis is caused by the trematode liver fluke Fasciola hepatica. Humans are accidental hosts getting infected after ingesting contaminated plants or water. 90 million people in 75 nations are at risk of infection with F hepatica. Immunosuppressed patients are higher risk of acquiring infection and may present with atypical manifestations. Patients can present with hepatic involvement, biliary features or a combination of both. Confirmation of the diagnosis is by demonstration of live parasites or eggs in bile or feces, serology (immunoelectrophoresis, indirect immunofluorescence, indirec

Characterization of multiple life stages of two Australian Fasciola hepatica isolates in sheep.

Information on the susceptibility status of Fasciola hepatica isolates is lacking in the literature, even for those isolates considered to be laboratory reference strains. Four controlled efficacy studies were conducted on two Fasciola hepatica isolates from Australia, viz. 'Oberon' and 'Sunny Corner' with treatment at either 2, 6 or 10 weeks post-infection (wpi) as defined in each study. Fluke burdens and examination of livers occurred at necropsy in weeks 12 (Study 1) or 13 (Studies 2, 3 and 4) post-infection. The triclabendazole (TCBZ) resistance status of the Oberon isolate was confirmed i

The transmission of Fasciola spp. to cattle and contamination of grazing areas with Fasciola eggs in the Red River Delta region of Vietnam.

At four times during November 2010, cattle with infections of Fasciola spp., in two communes of northern Vietnam, were allocated to two equivalent groups. Cattle in one group were treated with triclabendazole. Faecal samples collected monthly from both groups were tested for Fasciola copro-antigens and the presence of Fasciola eggs. Re-infection of treated cattle occurred from early March to late November, coinciding with high weekly totals of rainfall. Contamination of grazing areas by untreated cattle was high and relatively constant throughout the year. However, contamination was reduced to

[Four cases of hepatic fascioliasis mimicking cholangiocarcinoma].

Human fascioliasis is a zoonosis caused by Fasciola hepatica, and this is a trematode that infests cattle and sheep. Humans are accidental hosts in the life cycle of this parasite. People are infected by ingestion of the water or the raw aquatic vegetables that are contaminated with the metacercaria. This fluke's worldwide distribution occurs in areas where sheep, cattle and goats are raised, and there is a life-cycle niche for this fluke in lymnaeid snails. However, it is a rare disease in Korea. We experienced four human fascioliasis which were difficult to differentiate from hepatic maligna

Studies of human fasciolosis in Egypt: some serum lipid parameters before and after treatment.

Ten adult patients with proven fasciolosis were enrolled in the study. Serum samples were obtained before and one month after successful treatment using a single oral dose of triclabendazole. It was observed that, serum triglycerides (TG) and very low density lipoproteins (VLDL-C) increased, while serum total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) exhibited a significant decrease. These changes were due to the degenerative necrotic damage of the hepatocytes. One month after treatment, the serum level of total cholesterol, HDL-C

Comparative evaluation of the ovicidal activity of Azadirachta indica and its green synthesized silver nanoparticles against Fasciola gigantica eggs.

Fasciolosis, caused by Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica, is an important veterinary disease of livestock, leading to health complications and substantial economic losses. The eggs produced by the adult flukes pass out of the host along with the feces that ensure the propagation of their infection and lifecycle. Therefore, targeting the eggs to control this parasite could check the snail infection and the completion of life cycle, and the spread of fasciolosis. The present study evaluated the ovicidal activities of ethanolic extract of Azadirachta indica leaf and its green-synthesized silver
