Does Socioeconomic Status Affect Stage at Presentation for Larynx Cancer in Canada's Universal Health Care System?

OBJECTIVE: Diagnosis of laryngeal cancer is dependent on awareness that persistent hoarseness needs to be investigated as well as access to an otolaryngologist. This study aimed to better classify and understand 3 factors that may lead to variability in stage at presentation of laryngeal cancer: (1) socioeconomic status (SES), (2) differences in access to health care by location of residence (rural vs urban or by province), and (3) access to an otolaryngologist (by otolaryngologists per capita). STUDY DESIGN: Registry-based multicenter cohort analysis. SETTING: This was a national study acro

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols for colorectal cancer in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Japan has one of the highest five-year relative survival rates for colorectal cancer in the world, with its own traditions of perioperative care and a unique insurance system. The benefits of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols in the Japanese population have yet to be clarified. METHODS: We evaluated 352 consecutive cases of colorectal cancer resection at Tokyo Metropolitan Bokutoh Hospital between July 2009 and November 2012. Of these, 95 cases were performed according to traditional protocols (traditional group), and 257 according to ERAS protocols (ERAS group), wh

Health insurance coverage for medical nutrition therapy in older women with cancer: a comparative health policy perspective on long-term care, frailty, and survivorship equity.

Older women with cancer face overlapping risks of malnutrition, sarcopenia, frailty, treatment toxicity, functional decline, and dependence on long-term care. Medical nutrition therapy (MNT) can translate nutrition screening into individualized dietary counseling, symptom-responsive support, oral nutritional supplements, and enteral or parenteral nutrition when clinically indicated. Yet access is strongly conditioned by health insurance design. Eligibility restrictions, cost sharing, limited dietitian networks, fragmented authorization, and discontinuity between hospital, home, and long-term c

Quantitative determination of iron (III) in polymaltose haematinic formulations on the Ghanaian market.

Iron is an essential element needed by living organisms to enable their bodies to perform a variety of cellular functions and it is tightly regulated in the body systems of living organisms. One major public health issue in developing countries is the problem of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia in infants, young children, and adults. In sub-Saharan Africa, Ghana is one of the very few countries implementing a universal health insurance programme and therefore, iron (III) polymaltose complex suspension has been one of the medications on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) dru

Dementia care in a rapidly aging society.

INTRODUCTION: As one of the most rapidly aging societies globally, Korea's efforts to mitigate the social burden of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) may provide valuable insights. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods review of studies and policies related to dementia care in Korea over the past 25 years, including quantitative analysis of administrative and comparative data. RESULTS: Estimates suggest a high social burden from ADRD, with annual costs increasing from 0.9% to 3.8% of gross domestic product between 2019 and 2050. Pilot programs for integrated community care and

Lessons From the Canadian Experience With Single-Payer Health Insurance: Just Comfortable Enough With the Status Quo.

With single-payer public health insurance again on the political radar in the United States at both the state (California) and federal (Democrat party) levels, the performance of the Canadian health care system during the last 50 years and the lessons it may offer should be considered. Canadians are proud of their universal approach to health insurance based on need rather than income. The system has many strengths, such as the ease of obtaining care, relatively low costs, and low administrative costs, with effectiveness and safety roughly on par with other countries, including those, such as

Stakeholders' perspectives on funding malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis services in Tanzania through domestic resources mobilisation: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Low-income and middle-income countries continue to face challenges in financing health programmes due to budgetary constraints and decreased donor funding. Off-budget financing has become crucial for controlling diseases like malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis (TB). However, there is limited evidence on alternative domestic funding approaches to support implementation of healthcare programmes in Tanzania. OBJECTIVE: The study explored stakeholder perspectives on alternative domestic funding approaches to support malaria, HIV/AIDS and TB services in Tanzania. METHODS: A qualitativ

Czech Republic: health system review.

This analysis of the Czech health system reviews recent developments in organization and governance, health financing, health-care provision, health reforms and health system performance. The Czech health-care system is based on compulsory statutory health insurance providing virtually universal coverage and a broad range of benefits, and doing so at 7.7 % of GDP in 2012 - well below the EU average - of which a comparatively high 85 % was publicly funded. Some important health indicators are better than the EU averages (such as mortality due to respiratory disease) or even among the best in th

Influence of metabolic profiles on the safety of drug therapy in routine care in Germany: protocol of the cohort study EMPAR.

INTRODUCTION: Pre-emptive testing of pharmacogenetically relevant single-nucleotide polymorphisms can be an effective tool in the prevention of adverse drug reactions and therapy resistance. However, most of the tests are not used as standard in routine care in Germany because of lacking evidence for the clinical and economical benefit and their impact on the usage of healthcare services. We address this issue by investigating the influence of pharmacogenetic profiles on the use of healthcare services over an extended period of several years using routine care data from a statutory health insu

Access to health care for migrants in the Greater Mekong Subregion: policies and legal frameworks and their impact on malaria control in the context of malaria elimination.

The launch of the Global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration in December 2018 marked the first-ever United Nations global agreement on a common approach to international migration in all its dimensions. The global compact aims to reduce the risks and vulnerabilities migrants face at different stages of migration, by respecting, protecting and fulfilling their human rights and providing them with care and assistance. A key example of the intersection of the right to health and migration is seen in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) - comprising Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Repu

Liver disease burden and required treatment expenditures for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in Thailand: Implications for HCV elimination in the new therapeutic era, a population-based study.

The prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has been decreasing globally, but the growing effects of HCV-related morbidity and mortality remain of concern. Advances in curative medicine, involving direct-acting antivirals (DAAs), have led many countries to aim to eradicate HCV. Information on epidemiology and disease burden is essential for national policy development. Thus, this study aimed to determine the HCV-related hepatic disease burden in areas of Thailand with high and average HCV prevalence in order to extrapolate the viral burden across Thailand. Patients previously diagnosed
