Hydrophilic catheters for intermittent catheterization and occurrence of urinary tract infections. A retrospective comparative study in patients with spinal cord Injury.

BACKGROUND: Neurogenic bladder dysfunction is a major problem for spinal cord injury (SCI) patients not only due to the risk of serious complications but also because of the impact on quality of life. The main aim of this study is to compare the rate of urinary tract infection (UTI) associated with hydrophilic-coated catheters versus uncoated polyvinyl chloride (PVC) catheters among SCI patients presenting with functional neurogenic bladder sphincter disorders. METHODOLOGY: This was a retrospective cohort study from 2005 to 2020 including adult male or female patients who have an SCI at least

Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio as an early indicator for ureteral catheterization in patients with renal colic due to upper urinary tract lithiasis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) can predict the need for ureteral catheterization in patients with renal colic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively studied 15,887 patients with renal colic between 2005 and 2019. Patients with prior antibiotics treatment (156), with hematological diseases (15), with negative computerized tomography scan (CTS) for stone disease (473) or with no available laboratory findings (1750) were excluded. A ureteral double J stent (DJS) was inserted in case of ongoing pain, fever, sepsis, single kidney and elevated blood creati

Laparoscopy-Assisted Cutaneous Vesicostomy in Combination with Radical Nephrectomy in an Adult Patient with Neurogenic Bladder and Difficulty with Permanent Urinary Catheterization.

Background: Cutaneous vesicostomy is a urinary diversion for chronic urinary retention caused by neurogenic bladder. In this procedure, urine is drained directly from the bladder into a pouch attached to the lower abdomen, where the use of a catheter is unnecessary. Although complications of this procedure have been described, such as stoma stenosis, bladder prolapse, bladder calculi, and peristomal dermatitis, it is useful for patients who have difficulty with permanent bladder catheterization. The laparoscopy-assisted technique for cutaneous vesicostomy has not been described in the existing

Changes in Urinary Aquaporin 2 and Serum Sodium After Catheterization in Elderly Patients with Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone and Urinary Retention: A Preliminary Hospital-based Study in Yangon, Myanmar.

BACKGROUND: The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) is the most common electrolyte disorder among elderly patients. Chronic urinary retention has also been implicated in the development of SIADH. The mechanism by which urinary retention leads to SIADH remains unclear. Increased responsiveness of the collecting ducts to arginine vasopressin has been observed in elderly patients with urinary retention. This study aims to evaluate whether SIADH in elderly patients with urinary retention is associated with increased urinary aquaporin 2 (U-AQP2) levels and whether the i

Risk factors for hematuria during indwelling urinary catheterization in acute myocardial infarction: a comparative analysis using logistic regression and decision tree.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to systematically identify risk factors for urinary catheter-related hematuria in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). By integrating logistic regression and decision tree models, we sought to develop actionable strategies for risk stratification and complication prevention. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 209 AMI patients was conducted to evaluate predictors of hematuria, including demographics, coagulation indices (INR, platelets), and procedural variables. Logistic regression and decision tree (CART algorithm) models were employed to identify ri

Routine Indwelling Urethral Catheterization in Acute Heart Failure Patients Is Associated With Increased Urinary Tract Complications Without Improved Heart Failure Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Indwelling urethral catheters (IUC) are routinely inserted for the purpose of monitoring urine output in patients with acute heart failure (AHF). The benefit of IUC in patients capable of complying with urine collection protocols is unclear, and IUC carry multiple risks. This study describes the impact of IUC on AHF treatment. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 540 records were retrospectively analyzed. After exclusion criteria were applied, 316 patients were propensity matched to establish groups of 100 AHF patients who either did (IUC(+)) or did not receive an IUC (IUC(-)) upon adm

Hydrophilic versus non-hydrophilic catheters for clean intermittent catheterization: a meta-analysis to determine their capacity in reducing urinary tract infections.

INTRODUCTION: Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) is associated with an increased risk of urinary tract infections (UTI), urethral trauma, urethral stenosis, hematuria, and pain. The first catheters were developed of polyvinyl carbon (PVC). Several types of catheters have been developed to reduce these complications, such as those with hydrophilic coating. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of hydrophilic coated catheters compared to uncoated catheters on the rate of UTI in patients using CIC. METHODOLOGY: A systematic literature se

Delay in detection of urethral catheter misplacement in the vagina of an older adult patient due to urinary outflow during catheterization: a case report.

BACKGROUND: To our knowledge, no previous case report explicitly shows that urethral catheter misplacement in the vagina cannot be ruled out even if urinary outflow is observed during catheterization. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old female underwent urethral catheterization during induction of general anesthesia for hemiarthroplasty using a bipolar hip prosthesis. Although the urethral meatus could not be visualized, urinary outflow was observed. However, drainage subsequently stopped, and the catheter was eventually found to have been misplaced in the vagina. Detection of the catheter mispl

Postoperative urinary retention: risk factors, bladder filling rate and time to catheterization: an observational study as part of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of risk factors for postoperative urinary retention may guide appropriate and timely urinary catheterization. We aimed to determine independent risk factors for postoperative urinary catheterization in general surgical patients. In addition, we calculated bladder filling rate and assessed the time to spontaneous voiding or catheterization. We used the patients previously determined individual maximum bladder capacity as threshold for urinary catheterization. METHODS: Risk factors for urinary catheterization were prospectively determined in 936 general surgical patients.

The effect of bladder catheterization on the incidence of urinary tract infection in laboring women with epidural analgesia: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: There is conflicting evidence on whether intermittent catheterization (IC) is less associated with urinary tract infection (UTI) and more likely to prevent urinary retention than continuous catheterization (CC). We aimed to compare the effect of IC with that of CC on the incidence of postpartum UTI, urinary retention and hemorrhage in laboring women with epidural analgesia. METHODS: Electronic searches were performed in PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library from their inception to October 2018. We selected RCTs comparing IC with CC in laboring women with epidural an

Non-invasive measurement of bladder volume as an indication for bladder catheterization after orthopaedic surgery and its effect on urinary tract infections.

A non-invasive ultrasound imaging technique (BladderScan) was used prospectively in an attempt to reduce the need for catheterization of the urinary bladder and the incidence of urinary tract infections after orthopaedic surgery. Over a 4-month period, in which 1920 patients were included, catheterization was performed if there was no spontaneous diuresis by 8 h after surgery. A total of 31% of these patients were catheterized, and 18 patients developed urinary tract infections. In a subsequent 4-month period, there were 2196 patients, catheterization was performed only if the bladder volume w

Effect of Bladder Catheterization On Bacterial Interference With Asymptomatic Escherichia coli Strain 83972 in an Experimental Porcine Model of Urinary Tract Infection.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common disease with a significant risk of relapse. Deliberate bladder colonization with asymptomatic Escherichia coli is being explored as a potential strategy to fend off invading uropathogens, thereby mitigating the risk of symptomatic UTI. Currently, one major obstacle is the low success rates for achieving persistent bladder colonization with asymptomatic bacteria and experimental challenge studies are lacking. Here, we assessed the influence of an indwelling bladder catheter on the ability of asymptomatic E. coli to colonize the bladder and t

COMPARISON OF LATEX AND SILICON INDWELLING CATHETER IN TERMS OF RATE OF BACTERIAL COLONIZATION IN MALES WITH ACUTE URINARY RETENTION AT 5TH DAY OF CATHETERIZATION.

BACKGROUND: Abstraction of wisdom teeth or impacted third molar under local anaesthesia is one of the most frequent interventions by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. The abstraction of the third molar is usually followed by the release of liberation and consequent trismus, pain, and swelling due to the area of the third molar being highly vascularized and rich in loose connective tissue. Objective of the study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of ascorbic acid following surgical extraction of the third molar. METHODS: The current study was carried out Armed Forces Institute of De
