Topographic Organization of Inferior Olive Projections to the Zebrin II Stripes in the Pigeon Cerebellar Uvula.

This study was aimed at mapping the organization of the projections from the inferior olive (IO) to the ventral uvula in pigeons. The uvula is part of the vestibulocerebellum (VbC), which is involved in the processing of optic flow resulting from self-motion. As in other areas of the cerebellum, the uvula is organized into sagittal zones, which is apparent with respect to afferent inputs, the projection patterns of Purkinje cell (PC) efferents, the response properties of PCs and the expression of molecular markers such as zebrin II (ZII). ZII is heterogeneously expressed such that there are sa

Contributions of the Musculus Uvulae to Velopharyngeal Closure Quantified With a 3-Dimensional Multimuscle Computational Model.

The convexity of the dorsal surface of the velum is critical for normal velopharyngeal (VP) function and is largely attributed to the levator veli palatini (LVP) and musculus uvulae (MU). Studies have correlated a concave or flat nasal velar surface to symptoms of VP dysfunction including hypernasality and nasal air emission. In the context of surgical repair of cleft palates, the MU has been given relatively little attention in the literature compared with the larger LVP. A greater understanding of the mechanics of the MU will provide insight into understanding the influence of a dysmorphic M

The effect of uvula-preserving palatopharyngoplasty in obstructive sleep apnea on globus sense and positional dependency.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the outcomes of uvula-preserving palatopharyngoplasty (UPPPP) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). METHODS: Twenty men with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome received the UPPPP operation at our institution. We measured symptom changes after UPPPP using a visual analog scale (VAS), and all patients were examined with polysomnography pre- and post-operatively. 'Surgical success' was defined as reduction in apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) to below 20 events per hour and more than 50% post-operative reduction. RESULTS: Snoring decreased signific

Differential projections from the vestibular nuclei to the flocculus and uvula-nodulus in pigeons (Columba livia).

The pigeon vestibulocerebellum is divided into two regions based on the responses of Purkinje cells to optic flow stimuli: the uvula-nodulus responds best to self-translation, and the flocculus responds best to self-rotation. We used retrograde tracing to determine whether the flocculus and uvula-nodulus receive differential mossy fiber input from the vestibular and cerebellar nuclei. From retrograde injections into the both the flocculus and uvula-nodulus, numerous cells were found in the superior vestibular nucleus (VeS), the cerebellovestibular process (pcv), the descending vestibular nucle

Electron microscopy study of peripheral nerves in the uvulae of snorers and obstructive sleep apnoea patients.

HYPOTHESIS: The pathophysiology of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea is still unclear. Two theories are proposed. The first is the obstructive theory, which postulates palatopharyngeal muscle hypertrophy leading to airway narrowing; there is no neural role. The second is the neurogenic theory, which postulates neural degeneration due to vibratory stretch trauma, leading to muscle atrophy and collapse. As identification of nerve fibres in the uvula and palate is difficult and time-consuming, all previous studies aiming to differentiate between these two theories have been based on indirect o

The nodulus and uvula: source of cerebellar control of spatial orientation of the angular vestibulo-ocular reflex.

The nodulus and rostral-ventral uvula of the vestibulo-cerebellum play a critical role in orienting eye velocity of the slow component of the angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (aVOR) to gravito-inertial acceleration (GIA). This is done by altering the time constants of "velocity storage" in the vestibular system and by generating "cross-coupled" eye velocities that shift the eye velocity vector from along the body yaw axis to the yaw axis in a spatial frame. In this report, we show that eye velocity generated through the aVOR by constant velocity centrifugation in the monkey orients to the GIA i

Topography and reciprocal activity of cerebellar Purkinje cells in the uvula-nodulus modulated by vestibular stimulation.

In the rabbit uvula-nodulus, vestibular and optokinetic information is mapped onto parasagittal zones by climbing fibers. These zones are related functionally to different pairs of vertical semicircular canals, otolithic inputs and horizontal optokinetic inputs. Vestibular stimulation restricted to one of these zones modulates climbing fiber responses (CFRs). Within each of these zones, simple spikes (SSs) are modulated reciprocally with CFRs. In rabbits anesthetized with chloralose-urethan, we have used vestibular and optokinetic stimulation to evoke CFRs within a parasagittal zone while reco

[Carcinoma of the soft palate and uvula. An analysis of the results and the reasons for failures. A study of 76 cases].

The treatment of carcinomas of the soft palate most often involves radiotherapy. In order to assess the value of irradiation, notably in the treatment of limited T1 or T2 tumours, a retrospective study was carried out of 76 case records suitable for analysis of patients treated in our hospital for this type of tumour between 1974 and 1987. There were 70 men and 6 women. The mean age was 54 years. Fifty-four patients had limited T1 or T2 tumours (including 40 without lymphadenopathy). Treatment methods varied but 48/76 were treated by radiotherapy only (transcutaneous irradiation and/or local i

The First Report of Small Cell Cancer of the Uvula Presenting With Ectopic Adrenocorticotropic Hormone Syndrome.

Small cell carcinoma (SmCC) of the head and neck is a rare occurrence. We herein present a case of a 62-year-old female who was diagnosed with small cell cancer of the uvula. The patient developed increased body swelling, elevated blood pressure, persistent hypokalemia and new onset diabetes mellitus. Further workup confirmed a diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome secondary to ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) production. To our knowledge, this is only the second case of SmCC of the uvula described in literature, and the first associated with any paraneoplastic syndrome. By reporting this

[Nicotine concentrations in the palatine tonsil, uvula mucosa and septum cartilage of smokers--a pilot study].

The concentrations of nicotine were determined via radioimmunoassay in the palatine tonsils (n = 22) and in the mucosa of the uvula (n = 5) of eleven male smokers, and in the nasal septal cartilage of four other smokers. The same tissues of five nonsmokers served as controls. The mean values of the nicotine concentrations were 77 ng/g for the tonsils (level of serum: 151 ng/g), 114.5 ng/g for the mucosa of the uvula (level of serum: 215 ng/g) and 36 ng/g for the septal cartilage (level of serum: 97 ng/g). There was no nicotine in the tissues and serum of the control group. The correlations bet

Neuronal localization of pseudocholinesterase in the rat cerebellum: sagittal bands of Purkinje cells in the nodulus and uvula.

The histochemical distribution of pseudocholinesterase was studied in the rat cerebellum using Koelle's copper-thiocholine method. Throughout the cerebellum, pseudocholinesterase is uniformly localized in the endothelial cells of blood vessels and in the cell bodies and processes of the Bergmann glia. In addition, we demonstrate that exclusively in the ventral uvula and in the nodulus (lobules IXc and X of Larsell) pseudocholinesterase is localized in a small subpopulation of Purkinje cells. The cell bodies and dendrites of these labeled Purkinje cells form at least 4 distinct parallel bands e
