Impact of baseline plasma HIV-1 RNA and time to virological suppression on virological rebound according to first-line antiretroviral regimen.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the risk of virological rebound in HIV-1-infected patients achieving virological suppression on first-line combined ART (cART) according to baseline HIV-1 RNA, time to virological suppression and type of regimen. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Subjects were 10 836 adults who initiated first-line cART (two nucleoside or nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors + efavirenz, a ritonavir-boosted protease inhibitor or an integrase inhibitor) from 1 January 2007 to 31 December 2014. Cox proportional hazards models with multiple adjustment and propensity score matching were use

Hantavirus: A Comprehensive Narrative Review of Virology, Epidemiology, Pathogenesis, Clinical Manifestations, Diagnostics, and Emerging Therapeutic Strategies.

Hantaviruses are a genus of negative-sense, single-stranded, tri-segmented RNA viruses that are distributed worldwide. They cause two severe zoonotic diseases in humans: haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), also known as hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS). Hantaviruses are primarily spread by inhaling aerosolised excreta from infected rodent reservoirs. Over 50 rodent species on six continents have been found to carry hantaviruses, with only one reported case of human-to-human transmission, involving the Andes virus (ANDV) in South Amer

The virology of Omicron: pathophysiology, immune regulation, and clinical impact of SARS-CoV-2 sub variants.

Since its emergence in late 2019, SARS-CoV-2 has evolved into multiple variants with distinct genetic and clinical features. Among them, the Omicron variant (B.1.1.529) and its sublineages BA.2.75, JN.1.8, and KP.2 have shown enhanced transmissibility and immune evasion, while generally exhibiting reduced lower respiratory tract pathogenicity compared to earlier variants, thereby continuing to pose significant challenges to public health. In India, these variants have significantly shaped the trajectory of the pandemic, necessitating focused evaluation of their biological and clinical impact.

Climate, demography, immunology, and virology combine to drive two decades of dengue virus dynamics in Cambodia.

The incidence of dengue virus disease has increased globally across the past half-century, with highest number of cases ever reported in 2019 and again in 2023. We analyzed climatological, epidemiological, and phylogenomic data to investigate drivers of two decades of dengue in Cambodia, an understudied endemic setting. Using epidemiological models fit to a 19-y dataset, we first demonstrate that climate-driven transmission alone is insufficient to explain three epidemics across the time series. We then use wavelet decomposition to highlight enhanced annual and multiannual synchronicity in den

Biotypes of Central Nervous System Complications in People With Human Immunodeficiency Virus: Virology, Immunology, and Neuropathology.

Despite viral suppression with antiretroviral therapy (ART), people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) continue to experience central nervous system (CNS) complications, primarily in the form of mild cognitive impairment and mental health disorders (eg, depression, anxiety, other neuropsychiatric problems). The multifactorial pathogenesis and heterogeneity of mechanisms likely underlying CNS complications must be addressed in the development of preventive interventions and effective treatments. The biotyping approach has previously been useful to define phenotypes of other CNS diseases ba

Insights into the ZIKV NS1 Virology from Different Strains through a Fine Analysis of Physicochemical Properties.

The flavivirus genus has several organisms responsible for generating various diseases in humans. Recently, especially in tropical regions, Zika virus (ZIKV) has raised great health concerns due to the high number of cases affecting the area during the last years that has been accompanied by a rise in the cases of the Guillain-Barré syndrome and fetal and neonatal microcephaly. Diagnosis is still difficult since the clinical symptoms between ZIKV and other flaviviruses (e.g., dengue and yellow fever) are highly similar. The understanding of their common physicochemical properties that are pH-d

Type A viral hepatitis: A summary and update on the molecular virology, epidemiology, pathogenesis and prevention.

Although epidemic jaundice was well known to physicians of antiquity, it is only in recent years that medical science has begun to unravel the origins of hepatitis A virus (HAV) and the unique pathobiology underlying acute hepatitis A in humans. Improvements in sanitation and the successful development of highly efficacious vaccines have markedly reduced the worldwide prevalence and incidence of this enterically-transmitted infection over the past quarter century, yet the virus persists in vulnerable populations and remains a common cause of food-borne disease outbreaks in economically-advanta

The proposal of Paediatric Virology and its perspectives: An interview with Professor of Paediatrics Maria Theodoridou.

Professor Maria Theodoridou, Emeritus Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Athens, is one of the few paediatricians in Greece, who have experienced almost all the infectious diseases of the second half of the 20th century and their severe consequences, prior to the widespread adoption of immunisations. A milestone during her career was the establishment of a specialised National Reference Unit for the care of paediatric patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) at the 'Aghia Sophia' Children's Hospital in Athens, Greece. According to Professor Theodoridou, training on t

Immunology, microbiology, and virology following placement of NobelPerfect scalloped dental implants: analysis of a case series.

BACKGROUND: Cytokine-microbiology-virology monitoring after implant placement may help to develop profiles of variables that can help to explain interaction between the immune system and alveolar bone. Descriptive information at the molecular and cellular levels after implant placement is important in the emerging field of osteoimmunology and may help to formulate hypotheses and intervention strategies in periodontology and implantology. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the presence or absence of selected cytokines in association with periodontopathogens and human cytomegal

Between bacteriology and virology: the development of typhus vaccines between the First and Second World Wars.

This paper provides an overview of the development of typhus vaccines between the first and second world wars. It is shown that there was a shift in the classification of the causal Rickettsiae from being classed as bacteria to being conceptualised as a type of virus. This 'paradigm switch' stimulated interest in the possibility of producing an effective medicine.

Inner ear and facial nerve complications of acute otitis media with focus on bacteriology and virology.

CONCLUSION: Among 20 patients with inner ear complications and/or peripheral facial palsy secondary to acute otitis media (AOM) a proven or probable bacteriological cause was found in 13 (65%). In seven patients (35%), a proven or probable viral cause was found. Only two of the patients (10%), with a proven bacterial AOM and a clinical picture of a purulent labyrinthitis in both, together with a facial palsy in one, had a substantial degree of dysfunction. Although the number of patients in this study is relatively low our findings show that inner ear complications and facial palsy due to AOM

Personal historical chronicle of six decades of basic and applied research in virology, immunology, and vaccinology.

The sciences of vaccinology and of immunology were created just two centuries ago by Jenner's studies of prevention of smallpox by inoculation with cowpox virus. This rudimentary beginning was expanded greatly by the giants of late 19th and early 20th centuries biomedical sciences. The period from 1930 to 1950 was a transitional era with the introduction of chick embryos and minced tissues for propagating viruses and rickettsiae in vitro for vaccines. Modern era vaccinology began about 1950 as a continuum of notable advances made during the 1940s and World War II. Present vaccinology is based

Role of the virology laboratory in diagnosis and management of patients with central nervous system disease.

A number of viruses cause acute central nervous system disease. The two major clinical presentations are aseptic meningitis and the less common meningoencephalitis. Clinical virology laboratories are now more widely available than a decade ago; they can be operated on a modest scale and can be tailored to the needs of the patients they serve. Most laboratories can provide diagnostic information on diseases caused by enteroviruses, herpesviruses, and human immunodeficiency virus. Antiviral therapy for herpes simplex virus is now available. By providing a rapid diagnostic test or isolation of th

Research in the field of antiviral chemotherapy performed in the "Stefan S. Nicolau" Institute of Virology.

A brief review is made of the research in the field of antiviral chemotherapy performed in the "Stefan S. Nicolau" Institute of Virology during the 35 years since its foundation. The investigations have mainly focused on influenza and herpes virus, but the chemotherapy of other viral infections (mumps, vaccinia, Coxsackie, etc.) has also been approached. Most of the chemotherapy agents assayed have been represented by natural preparations: immunoglobulins, interferon, hormones, vitamins, plant extracts (garlic, horse radish), bee products (propolis, royal jelly); attempts have also been made w
