Visual cortex and auditory cortex activation in early binocularly blind macaques: A BOLD-fMRI study using auditory stimuli.

Cross-modal plasticity within the visual and auditory cortices of early binocularly blind macaques is not well studied. In this study, four healthy neonatal macaques were assigned to group A (control group) or group B (binocularly blind group). Sixteen months later, blood oxygenation level-dependent functional imaging (BOLD-fMRI) was conducted to examine the activation in the visual and auditory cortices of each macaque while being tested using pure tones as auditory stimuli. The changes in the BOLD response in the visual and auditory cortices of all macaques were compared with immunofluoresce

Towards realistic simulation of disease progression in the visual cortex with CNNs.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and mammalian visual systems share architectural and information processing similarities. We leverage these parallels to develop an in-silico CNN model simulating diseases affecting the visual system. This model aims to replicate neural complexities in an experimentally controlled environment. Therefore, we examine object recognition and internal representations of a CNN under neurodegeneration and neuroplasticity conditions simulated through synaptic weight decay and retraining. This approach can model neurodegeneration from events like tau accumulation, r

Reconsidering the Border between the Visual and Posterior Parietal Cortex of Mice.

The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) contributes to multisensory and sensory-motor integration, as well as spatial navigation. Based on primate studies, the PPC is composed of several subdivisions with differing connection patterns, including areas that exhibit retinotopy. In mice the composition of the PPC is still under debate. We propose a revised anatomical delineation in which we classify the higher order visual areas rostrolateral area (RL), anteromedial area (AM), and Medio-Medial-Anterior cortex (MMA) as subregions of the mouse PPC. Retrograde and anterograde tracing revealed connectivi

The Role of Frontoparietal Cortex across the Functional Stages of Visual Search.

Areas in frontoparietal cortex have been shown to be active in a range of cognitive tasks and have been proposed to play a key role in goal-driven activities (Dosenbach, N. U. F., Fair, D. The dynamic contribution of the high-level visual cortex to imagery and perception.

Mental imagery and visual perception rely on the same content-dependent brain areas in the high-level visual cortex (HVC). However, little is known about dynamic mechanisms in these areas during imagery and perception. Here we disentangled local and inter-regional dynamic mechanisms underlying imagery and perception in the HVC and the hippocampus (HC), a key region for memory retrieval during imagery. Nineteen healthy participants watched or imagined a familiar scene or face during fMRI acquisition. The neural code for familiar landmarks and faces was distributed across the HVC and the HC, alt

Modulating the excitability of the visual cortex using a stimulation priming paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) can cause long term increase of corticospinal excitability when used to prime the motor cortex, before measuring the motor response in the hand muscles with TMS (Terney et al., 2008). In cognitive studies, tRNS has been used to improve visual attention and mathematical skills, an enhancement effect that might suggest sustained cortical plasticity changes (Cappelletti et al., 2013; Snowball et al., 2013). However, while the behavioral evidence of increased performance is becoming substantiated by empirical data, it still remains unclear w

Sensorimotor-independent development of hands and tools selectivity in the visual cortex.

The visual occipito-temporal cortex is composed of several distinct regions specialized in the identification of different object kinds such as tools and bodies. Its organization appears to reflect not only the visual characteristics of the inputs but also the behavior that can be achieved with them. For example, there are spatially overlapping responses for viewing hands and tools, which is likely due to their common role in object-directed actions. How dependent is occipito-temporal cortex organization on object manipulation and motor experience? To investigate this question, we studied five

Altered neurochemical coupling in the occipital cortex in migraine with visual aura.

BACKGROUND: Visual aura is present in about one-third of migraine patients and triggering by bright or flickering lights is frequently reported. METHOD: Using migraine with visual aura patients, we investigated the neurochemical profile of the visual cortex using magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Specifically, glutamate/creatine and GABA/creatine ratios were quantified in the occipital cortex of female migraine patients. RESULTS: GABA levels in the occipital cortex of migraine patients were lower than that of controls. Glutamate levels in migraine patients, but not controls, correlated with t

Altered functional connectivity of the primary visual cortex in subjects with amblyopia.

Amblyopia, which usually occurs during early childhood and results in poor or blurred vision, is a disorder of the visual system that is characterized by a deficiency in an otherwise physically normal eye or by a deficiency that is out of proportion with the structural or functional abnormalities of the eye. Our previous study demonstrated alterations in the spontaneous activity patterns of some brain regions in individuals with anisometropic amblyopia compared to subjects with normal vision. To date, it remains unknown whether patients with amblyopia show characteristic alterations in the fun

Spatiotemporal dynamics of pattern formation in the primary visual cortex and hallucinations.

The existence of visual hallucinations with prominent temporal oscillations is well documented in conditions such as Charles Bonnett Syndrome. To explore these phenomena, a continuum model of cortical activity that includes additional physiological features of axonal propagation and synapto-dendritic time constants, is used to study the generation of hallucinations featuring both temporal and spatial oscillations. A detailed comparison of the physiological features of this model with those of two others used previously in the modeling of hallucinations is made, and differences, particularly re

Retinotopic maps and foveal suppression in the visual cortex of amblyopic adults.

Amblyopia is a developmental visual disorder associated with loss of monocular acuity and sensitivity as well as profound alterations in binocular integration. Abnormal connections in visual cortex are known to underlie this loss, but the extent to which these abnormalities are regionally or retinotopically specific has not been fully determined. This functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study compared the retinotopic maps in visual cortex produced by each individual eye in 19 adults (7 esotropic strabismics, 6 anisometropes and 6 controls). In our standard viewing condition, the non-t

[One-trial visual recognition in cats: the role of the rhinal cortex].

Visual recognition memory in primates is mediated at least in part by the perirhinal and entorhinal (i.e., rhinal) cortices. To examine the role of these structures in cats' visual recognition memory, we performed combined electrolytic rhinal (perirhinal and entorhinal) lesions in a group of cats trained in visual delayed matching-to-sample with trial-unique objects in the modified Wisconsin General Testing Apparatus. Sham-operated and intact cats were used as control groups. Cats with rhinal lesions did not differ from the control sham-operated and unoperated groups in initial learning of the

[Interhemispheric connections in the visual cortex of cats reared with bilateral strabismus].

We have determined the spatial distribution of retrograde labelled callosal cells after microiontophoretic horseradish peroxidase injections into the single cortical columns of area 17, 18 in cats reared with bilateral convergent strabismus. The obtained strabismus angle was in the range 10-35 degrees. The zone of labelled cells was located asymmetrically in respect to location of injected column in opposite hemisphere. Some cells were revealed in the transition zone 17/18 and their retinotopic coordinates corresponded to the injected column, as was shown in intact cats. Other labelled cells w

A comparison of visual and auditory motion processing in human cerebral cortex.

Visual and auditory motion information can be used together to provide complementary information about the movement of objects. To investigate the neural substrates of such cross-modal integration, functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to assess brain activation while subjects performed separate visual and auditory motion discrimination tasks. Areas of unimodal activation included the primary and/or early sensory cortex for each modality plus additional sites extending toward parietal cortex. Areas conjointly activated by both tasks included lateral parietal cortex, lateral frontal co

The course and termination of corticothalamic fibres arising in the visual cortex of the rat.

Corticothalamic axons have been studied in adult Lister hooded rats with single or dual injections of tracers into the visual cortex. Labelled axons leave medial and lateral injection sites in separate or partially overlapping bundles along parallel trajectories in the subcortical white matter. In the internal capsule they converge and both bundles enter roughly the same sector of the thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN). Their reticular terminal fields, however, differ. Axons from a medial injection site innervate more lateral parts of the TRN than do the axons from lateral injection sites. The m

Induction of LTP and LTD in visual cortex neurones by intracellular tetanization.

Neurones from supragranular layers of rat visual cortex slices were activated by intracellular tetanization (IT) without concomitant presynaptic stimulation. The effect of IT was examined on EPSPs evoked at low stimulation intensity from two subsets of afferents by electrodes positioned in layers II and IV, respectively. In 17 of 23 inputs to 15 cells IT led to changes in EPSP amplitudes which persisted throughout the recording period (from at least 40 min to 3 h). For 10 potentiated inputs (nine cells) and eight depressed inputs (seven cells), EPSP amplitudes measured 30 min after tetanizatio

Neuritic plaques and vessels of visual cortex in aging and Alzheimer's dementia.

Changes in microvascular dimensions occurring with normal aging and Alzheimer's dementia were measured in thick sections of postmortem human visual cortex stained for alkaline phosphatase. Capillary density was decreased to the same degree in both normal aged and demented aged subjects. The fields selected for analysis in both groups included all cortical laminae and, where possible, amyloid-cored neuritic plaques. The mean density of such plaques in these selected fields was slightly but not significantly higher in the demented group. In both groups plaques were more plentiful in visual lamin

A functional role of cholinergic innervation to neurons in the cat visual cortex.

1. Effects of microionophoretic application of acetylcholine (ACh) and its antagonists on neuronal responses to visual stimuli and to electrical stimulation of the lateral geniculate nucleus were studied in the cat striate cortex. 2. Responses elicited visually and electrically were facilitated by ACh in 74% of the cells tested, whereas the responses were suppressed in 16%. These ACh effects were blocked by a muscarinic antagonist, atropine, but not by a nicotinic antagonist, hexamethonium, indicating that the ACh effects are mediated through muscarinic receptors. A single application of atrop

A Chimera Model for Motion Anticipation in the Retina and the Primary Visual Cortex.

We propose a mean field model of the primary visual cortex (V1), connected to a realistic retina model, to study the impact of the retina on motion anticipation. We first consider the case where the retina does not itself provide anticipation-which is then only triggered by a cortical mechanism, the "anticipation by latency"-and unravel the effects of the retinal input amplitude, of stimulus features such as speed and contrast and of the size of cortical extensions and fiber conduction speed. Then we explore the changes in the cortical wave of anticipation when V1 is triggered by retina-driven
