Response to letters about vitamin B12.

BACKGROUND: Many Chinese believe the lunar month of July, "ghost month" is inauspicious for major surgical procedures. This study hypothesised that caesaren delivery (CS) rates will be significantly lower during lunar July, and higher than normal during June, representing preemptive caesaren delivery to avoid delivering in July. METHODS: Population based data from Taiwan on all singleton deliveries during 1997-2003 (1 750 862 cases) were subjected to multivariate autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) modelling, adjusting for major obstetric complications (previous CS, breech presen

Association of co-existing vitamin B6 and B12 deficiency with polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, M protein, and skin changes (POEMS) syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Both vitamin B6 deficiency and vitamin B12 deficiency can present with symptoms that appear like polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, M protein, and skin changes (POEMS) syndrome, with painful peripheral neuropathy and sensorimotor dysfunction. There are rare reports of an association between vitamin B12 deficiency and POEMS syndrome, and even rarer reports of an association between vitamin B6 deficiency and POEMS syndrome. To our knowledge, this is the first described case with deficiencies in both vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 in association with POEMS syndrome. CASE PRESE

[Maternal vitamin B12 deficiency: cause for neurological symptoms in infancy].

BACKGROUND: Symptoms of Vitamin B (12) deficiency in infancy include growth retardation, regression of psychomotor development, muscular hypotonia and brain atrophy. Besides an inappropriate vegetarian diet of the infants, a vegan diet or a pernicious anaemia of the mother may lead to an insufficient vitamin B (12) supply of the child. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report here the neurological symptoms of 4 fully breast-fed infants from mothers on vegan diet or with pernicious anaemia. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Vitamin B (12) deficiency can easily be diagnosed by detection of methylmalonic acid

Vitamins and endurance training. Food for running or faddish claims?

The inter-relationship of food and physical performance, food is considered as a conglomerate of nutrients and man is depicted as a kind of organic pudding. This 'machine' concept of human performance in combination with the mysticism surrounding vitamins, has led to the faddish belief that additional vitamins are necessary to improve physical performance by means of supercharging the metabolic processes in the body. Various vitamins and their dietary recommendations as well as the indicators for vitamin status are discussed. It is concluded that a marginal or subclinical deficiency state can

Comparative studies on the effect of vitamin A, B1 and B6 deficiency on oxalate metabolism in male rats.

The study was conducted to investigate the effect of vitamin A, B1 and B6 deficiency on oxalate metabolism in rats. A significant hyperoxaluria was the common observation in all the three vitamin deficiencies (vitamin B6 greater than vitamin A greater than vitamin B1). The activities of hepatic glycolate oxidase and glycolate dehydrogenase were markedly enhanced in vitamin-A- and vitamin-B6-deficient rats. However, lactate dehydrogenase levels remained unaltered in these deficiencies as compared to their respective pair-fed controls. Vitamin B1 deficiency of 4 weeks' duration could augment the

Perspective: The High-Folate-Low-Vitamin B-12 Interaction Is a Novel Cause of Vitamin B-12 Depletion with a Specific Etiology-A Hypothesis.

Vitamin B-12 is a water-soluble vitamin that plays important roles in intermediary metabolism. Vitamin B-12 deficiency has many identifiable causes, including autoimmune and other gastrointestinal malabsorption disorders, dietary deficiency, and congenital defects in genes that are involved in vitamin B-12 trafficking and functions. Another putative cause of vitamin B-12 deficiency is the high-folate-low vitamin B-12 interaction, first suspected as the cause for observed relapse and exacerbation of the neurological symptoms in patients with pernicious anemia who were prescribed high oral doses

Macrocytosis: pitfalls in testing and summary of guidance.

Low vitamin B-12 levels can occur without deficiency being present, and normal levels don't always rule out vitamin B-12 deficiency. A clinical assessment, together with blood count and blood film results, can ensure a correct interpretation of vitamin B-12 and folate levels

Association between low vitamin B-12 status and latent tuberculosis infection among adults.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health threat worldwide, but most of the presumed infected individuals remain asymptomatic and contain Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) in a latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), and some of them will progress to active tuberculosis. Vitamin B-12 is crucial to maintain immune function, and play a role in the metabolism of MTB, while few studies investigated the impact of vitamin B-12 deficiency on tuberculosis. Therefore, we carried out the study to explore the association between vitamin B-12 deficiency and LTBI using the Nat

B vitamins and the aging brain.

Deficiencies of the vitamins folate, B(12) , and B(6) are associated with neurological and psychological dysfunction and with congenital defects. In the elderly, cognitive impairment and incident dementia may be related to the high prevalence of inadequate B vitamin status and to elevations of plasma homocysteine. Plausible mechanisms include homocysteine neurotoxicity, vasotoxicity, and impaired S-adenosylmethionine-dependent methylation reactions vital to central nervous system function. In light of this, it is imperative to find safe ways of improving vitamin B status in the elderly without

The B vitamin nutrition of insects: the contributions of diet, microbiome and horizontally acquired genes.

Insects generally cannot synthesize eight B vitamins that function as co-enzymes in various required enzymatic reactions. Most insects derive their B vitamin requirements from the diet, microbial symbionts, or a combination of these complementary sources. Exceptionally, the genomes of a few insects bear genes in vitamin B5 (pantothenate) and B7 (biotin) synthesis, horizontally acquired from bacteria. Biomarkers of B vitamin deficiency (e.g. vitamin titers, activity of vitamin-dependent enzymes) offer routes to investigate the incidence and the physiological and fitness consequences of B vitami

Oxalate excretion during carbohydrate infusions.

Oxalate metabolism was assessed in normal rats and rats deficient in vitamins B-1 and B-6 during intravenous infusions of solutions containing glucose, fructose, sorbitol or xylitol. Urinary excretions of oxalate, glyoxylate and glycine were considerably increased in vitamin B-6 deficient rats infused with xylitol. Significant amounts of 14C-oxalate were excreted only in vitamin B-6 deficient rats infused with U 14C-xylitol. Correction of vitamin B-6 deficiency resulted in a return to normal of urinary oxalate excretion and percentage of U 14C-xylitol excreted as 14C-oxalate. The results sugge

Effect of vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency on small intestinal absorption.

Three patients are described, and they provide further evidence that deficiency of folic acid and vitamin B(12) may sometimes affect small intestinal function. Malabsorption of both xylose and vitamin B(12) returned to normal in one patient after treatment of a megaloblastic anaemia due to dietary deficiency of folic acid. Impaired absorption of vitamin B(12) was corrected by vitamin B(12) therapy in the other two patients. The initial cause of the vitamin B(12) deficiency in one patient was not apparent, but she was taking Gynovlar 21, which may have been an aetiological factor. In the third
