Hemodynamic, ventilatory and gas exchange responses to exercise using a cycle ergometer and the incremental shuttle walk test in pregnant women.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease, including hypertension, in pregnant women is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally. The development of reference intervals for cardiovascular responses using exercising testing to measure oxygen utilisation (V̇O2) with cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), and distances walked using the incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT), may be promising methods to assess and stratify pregnant women regarding their risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, to encourage exercise during pregnancy, and to improve exercise prescriptions during pregnancy. Defining ambulation status in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy using the 10-metre walk test and the motor function measure scale.

PURPOSE: Timed functional tests have been explored to understand the natural history of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and to establish warning signs of loss of gait. This study verified whether the combination of the 10-metre walk test (10MWT) and the motor function measure (MFM) could classify the ambulation status of DMD patients. METHOD: Thirty-two patients, aged between 5 and 22 years, with independent gait initially evaluated over 11 years participated in the study. Two groups were created: ambulators and non-ambulators. For both groups, we calculated a 10MWT ratio, by dividing the t

Latent process model of the 6-minute walk test in Duchenne muscular dystrophy : A Bayesian approach to quantifying rare disease progression.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare X-linked genetic pediatric disease characterized by a lack of functional dystrophin production in the body, resulting in muscle deterioration. Lower body muscle weakness progresses to non-ambulation typically by early teenage years, followed by upper body muscle deterioration and ultimately death by the late twenties. The objective of this study was to enhance the quantitative understanding of DMD disease progression through nonlinear mixed effects modeling of the population mean and variability of the 6-min walk test (6MWT) clinical endpoint. 6-minute walk test as a measure of disease progression and fatigability in a cohort of individuals with RYR1-related myopathies.

BACKGROUND: RYR1-related Myopathies (RYR1-RM) comprise a group of rare neuromuscular diseases (NMDs) occurring in approximately 1/90000 people in the US pediatric population. RYR1-RM result from pathogenic mutations in the ryanodine receptor isoform-1 (RYR1) gene where consequent RyR1 protein calcium dysregulation leads to impaired excitation-contraction coupling, oxidative and nitrosative stress, and mitochondrial depletion. These physiological deficits perpetuate RyR1 dysfunction causing further muscle injury, muscle weakness, and muscle fatigue. Muscle weakness and fatigue are two primary c

Hand grip strength and 2-minute walk test in chronic graft-versus-host disease assessment: analysis from the Chronic GVHD Consortium.

Hand grip strength (HGS) and the 2-minute walk test (2MWT) have been proposed as elements of chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) assessment in clinical trials. Using all available data (n = 584 enrollment visits, 1689 follow-up visits, total of 2273 visits) from a prospective observational cohort study, we explored the relationship between HGS and 2MWT and patient-reported measures (Lee symptom scale, MOS 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey [SF-36], and Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy [FACT]-Bone Marrow Transplantation quality of life instruments and Human Activity Profile [HAP]), ch

Comparison of 6-minute walk test performance between male Active Duty soldiers and servicemembers with and without traumatic lower-limb loss.

The rehabilitation of U.S. military servicemembers (SMs) who have sustained a traumatic loss of one or both lower limbs requires outcome measures that can assess their physical capabilities in comparison with their uninjured colleagues. Describing reference ranges for the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) in both populations will help clinicians develop appropriate goals for rehabilitation and document progress toward those goals. A convenience sample of 118 male U.S. SMs with and 97 without traumatic lower-limb loss participated in this study. All participants completed a 6MWT, and comparisons were m

Physiological responses to maximal exercise testing and the modified incremental shuttle walk test in adults after thermal injury: a pilot study.

The ongoing hypermetabolic response associated with burn injury contributes significantly to loss of function, morbidity, and mortality. Exercise is strongly recommended to assist recovery and overall functional outcome. To date, there have been limited studies investigating the validity and practicality of both maximal laboratory and field tests in adult burns survivors. The objective of this study was to determine the metabolic and ventilatory response to cardiopulmonary maximal exercise testing (CPET) and the modified shuttle walk test (MSWT) in adult burns patients. Fifteen people (13 male

In Parkinson's disease, dual-tasking reduces gait smoothness during the straight-walking and turning-while-walking phases of the Timed Up and Go test.

BACKGROUND: Dual-task walking is used as a treatment, for gait assessment, and as an outcome measure in Parkinson's disease (PD). Movement smoothness, i.e. its non-intermittency, is a movement cardinal feature. This study assesses whether dual-tasking reduces gait smoothness in PD alongside reducing speed, one of its well-known effects. METHODS: The Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, instrumented with an inertial sensor fixed to the back, was administered to 33 PD patients (15 females; age: median = 71 years; IQR = 10) to assess two walking types: straight-walking and turning-while-walking.
