[Athletic injuries in children].

Sports participation can have both beneficial and negative effects. Specific effects are injuries. The change of incidence is dependent on a number of personal and environmental factors. Epidemiological research in the Netherlands in school aged children has shown that sports injuries occur primarily in club sport, even more during competition. The injuries are localised in the lower limbs: especially the knee and the ankle. The injuries are distortions and contusions and fewer fractures and muscle tears. The number of overuse injuries seems to be rising because children are doing increasingly

Effects of heat and humidity on the responses of exercising asthmatics to sulfur dioxide exposure.

Twenty-two asthmatic young adult volunteers, predetermined to be reactive to sulfur dioxide (SO2) with exercise at normal room temperature, were studied to document short-term effects of SO2 exposure under hot conditions, both humid and dry. For comparison, similar exposures were conducted at mild temperatures. All subjects were exposed in an environmental control chamber to all possible combinations of 2 atmospheric conditions (purified air and 0.6 ppm SO2), 2 temperatures (near 21 and 38 degrees C), and 2 levels of relative humidity (near 20 and 80%). Exposures involved 5 min of heavy exerci

Does Cold Water or Ice Slurry Ingestion During Exercise Elicit a Net Body Cooling Effect in the Heat?

Cold water or ice slurry ingestion during exercise seems to be an effective and practical means to improve endurance exercise performance in the heat. However, transient reductions in sweating appear to decrease the potential for evaporative heat loss from the skin by a magnitude that at least negates the additional internal heat loss as a cold ingested fluid warms up to equilibrate with body temperature; thus explaining equivalent core temperatures during exercise at a fixed heat production irrespective of the ingested fluid temperature. Internal heat transfer with cold fluid/ice is always 10

A nationwide survey of nonspeech oral motor exercise use: implications for evidence-based practice.

PURPOSE: A nationwide survey was conducted to determine if speech-language pathologists (SLPs) use nonspeech oral motor exercises (NSOMEs) to address children's speech sound problems. For those SLPs who used NSOMEs, the survey also identified (a) the types of NSOMEs used by the SLPs, (b) the SLPs' underlying beliefs about why they use NSOMEs, (c) clinicians' training for these exercises, (d) the application of NSOMEs across various clinical populations, and (e) specific tasks/procedures/tools that are used for intervention. METHOD: A total of 2,000 surveys were mailed to a randomly selected s

Comparison Between Supervised and Partly Supervised Cardiac Rehabilitation Protocols in Hypertensive Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension (HTN) is the main cause of cardiovascular diseases accounting for one-third of global mortality. Physical exercise reduces the incidence and prevalence of HTN and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Exercises recommended for hypertensive patients include supervised cardiac rehabilitation, which occurs in rehabilitation centers, and partly supervised rehabilitation, with the individual prescription of exercises conducted at patients' residences. OBJECTIVE: Compare clinical and functional parameters of hypertensive patients subjected to two cardiac rehabilitation pr

Water drinking during aerobic exercise improves the recovery of non-linear heart rate dynamics in coronary artery disease: crossover clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: The post-exercise recovery is a period of vulnerability of the cardiovascular system in which autonomic nervous system plays a key role in cardiovascular deceleration. It is already known that individuals with coronary artery disease (CAD) are at greater risk due to delayed vagal reactivation in this period. Water ingestion has been studied as a strategy to improve autonomic recovery and mitigate the risks during recovery. However, the results are preliminary and need further confirmation. Therefore, our aim was to investigate the influence of individualized water drinking on the

Improving functional capacity in haemophilia through adapted physical activity: a pilot study protocol.

Haemophilia, a genetic disorder characterised by deficient clotting factors, often leads to musculoskeletal complications such as haemophilic arthropathy. These complications result in reduced functional capacity, muscle weakness and kinesiophobia, which further exacerbate physical inactivity and psychological distress. The World Federation of Haemophilia recommends including regular physical activity in the management plans for individuals with haemophilia, emphasising its benefits for bone and muscle strengthening, improved coordination, maintenance of healthy body weight and enhanced self-e

Measuring Heart Rate Accurately in Patients With Parkinson Disease During Intense Exercise: Usability Study of Fitbit Charge 4.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease, affecting approximately 1% of the world's population. Increasing evidence suggests that aerobic physical exercise can be beneficial in mitigating both motor and nonmotor symptoms of the disease. In a recent pilot study of the role of exercise on PD, we sought to confirm exercise intensity by monitoring heart rate (HR). For this purpose, we asked participants to wear a chest strap HR monitor (Polar Electro Oy) and the Fitbit Charge 4 (Fitbit Inc) wrist-worn HR monitor as a potential proxy due to its convenie

Effects of long-term adapted physical training on functional capacity and quality of life in older adults with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) remains incurable and its prevalence is increasing as the population ages. Although physical activity is considered a therapeutic treatment to slow the progression of the disease, it is considered to be an effective non-pharmacological adjuvant to medication to improve the symptom management. METHODS: The training program was offered for all the participants (N = 50) in three non-consecutive sessions per week for 60 minutes and a total duration of 12 to 16 months. Each session is composed of warming up, adapted boxing training exercises, muscle building an

Athletes' exposure to air pollution during World Athletics Relays: A pilot study.

Potential adverse consequences of exposure to air pollutants during exercise include decreased lung function, and exacerbation of asthma and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. These effects are especially relevant for athletes and during international competitions, as they may impact athletic performance. Thus, assessing and mitigating exposure to air pollutants during exercising should be encouraged in sports venues. A comprehensive air quality assessment was carried out during the World Relays Yokohama 2019, in the stadium and the warm-up track. The pilot included on-line and off-line ins

The role of warmup in muscular injury prevention.

This study is an attempt to provide biomechanical support for the athletic practice of warming up prior to an exercise task to reduce the incidence of injury. Tears in isometrically preconditioned (stimulated before stretching) muscle were compared to tears in control (nonstimulated) muscle by examining four parameters: 1) force and 2) change of length required to tear the muscle, 3) site of failure, and 4) length-tension deformation. The tibialis anterior (TA), the extensor digitorum longus (EDL), and flexor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles from both hindlimbs of rabbits comprised our experimen
