Effect of Tai Chi and transcranial direct current stimulation on spontaneous neural activity in patients with mild cognitive impairment: An exploratory resting-state fMRI study.

INTRODUCTION: Tai Chi (TC) combined with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) improves memory function in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), but underlying neurophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to explore whether TC and tDCS can independently or interactively regulate spontaneous neural activity in different brain regions and enhance memory function. METHODS: In a randomized 2 × 2 factorial trial, 128 MCI patients were assigned to TC, tDCS, TC combined with tDCS, or health education for 12 weeks. Memory performance was assessed using the Chinese W

Correlations between behavior, memory, sleep-wake and melatonin in Williams-Beuren syndrome.

Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS), a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by a microdeletion on chromosomic region 7q11.23, presents with peculiar behavioral and neurocognitive phenotypes that are marked by apparently preserved social and communicative abilities, which contrasts with low overall cognitive and particularly visuospatial performance. In addition, parents often report complaints of sleep disorders and behavioral problems of unknown cause. Sleep is a biological phenomenon that is modulated by the plasma concentration of melatonin and with influence on behavioral aspects and memory. Thus

Megalencephaly-capillary malformation polymicrogyria: A review and complex pediatric case report.

Megalencephaly-Capillary Malformation Polymicrogyria (M-CAP) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by a spectrum of anomalies including macrocephaly and neurovascular malformations. Although developmental delays have been identified, research is devoid of neuropsychological data. This case report presents the neuropsychological profile of a 7-year-old, identified with M-CAP. Neuropsychological evaluation was completed subsequent to medical diagnosis. Reports from both parents and teachers included cognitive regression; specifically in the recall of learned material, reading, and information

A twin-case study of developmental number sense impairment.

The current study reports on 9-year-old monozygotic twin girls who fail to make any progress in learning basic mathematics in primary education. We tested the hypothesis that the twins' core maths problems were deficits in number sense that manifested as impairments in approximate and small number systems, resulting in impairment in nonsymbolic as well as in symbolic processing. While age-matched controls (eight typically developing girls) scored highly, the twins scored at chance on all number sense tasks. More specifically, on a nonsymbolic comparison task, even in the simplest ratio conditi

Cognitive profile difference between normally intelligent children with Asperger's disorder and those with pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified.

AIM: Asperger's disorder (Asperger syndrome, AS) and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) are different subtypes of mild pervasive developmental disorders (PDD). METHODS: Using the Japanese version of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Third Edition (WISC-III), 28 AS children (mean age, 9.3 years, 24 male) were compared with 78 PDD-NOS children (mean age, 7.6 years, 64 male) with normal intelligence (IQ > or = 85), using analysis of covariance (ancova) with the chronological age of a child as a covariate. RESULTS: Verbal IQ tended to be higher in the A

Cost-effective prediction of reading difficulties.

This study addressed 2 questions: (a) Can preschoolers who will fail at reading be more efficiently identified by targeting those at highest risk for reading problems? and (b) will auditory temporal processing (ATP) improve the accuracy of identification derived from phonological processing and oral language ability? A sample of 227 preschoolers was screened for Performance IQ and was tested on phonological awareness (PA). The upper and lower quartiles of the PA distribution were selected as being at lowest and highest risk, respectively, for reading failure. Children with good and poor PA wer

Psychometric validity of proration and Digit Span substitution for estimating WISC--R verbal and Full Scale IQs.

This study investigated the merits of substituting the Digit Span subtest for an invalid Verbal Scale subtest versus a proration method in calculating WISC--R Verbal and Full Scale IQ. Subjects were 93 child and adolescent psychiatric patients (67 boys and 26 girls) who ranged in age from 8 to 16 yr. Analysis indicated that the use of Digit Span as a substitute for the regularly administered Verbal subtests was inferior to the use of the comparable proration method. Although relatively few cases of misclassification occurred for either method in relation to Full Scale IQ, the rate of Verbal IQ

Optimized stereoelectroencephalography-guided thermocoagulation versus anterior temporal lobectomy in mesial temporal epilepsy: A pilot randomized controlled study.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) is the standard surgical treatment for drug-resistant mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE); however, it is associated with cognitive decline and visual field deficits. In the current era of personalized medicine and quality-of-life-focused care, minimally invasive surgical strategies are increasingly needed. Optimized stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG)-guided radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RF-TC) is a promising option for preserving cognitive and visual function while providing effective seizure control. OBJECTIVES: Methods: This assessor-bl

In vivo radioligand binding to translocator protein correlates with severity of Alzheimer's disease.

Neuroinflammation is a pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease, but its role in cognitive impairment and its course of development during the disease are largely unknown. To address these unknowns, we used positron emission tomography with (11)C-PBR28 to measure translocator protein 18 kDa (TSPO), a putative biomarker for inflammation. Patients with Alzheimer's disease, patients with mild cognitive impairment and older control subjects were also scanned with (11)C-Pittsburgh Compound B to measure amyloid burden. Twenty-nine amyloid-positive patients (19 Alzheimer's, 10 mild cognitive impa

Reliability Underreported in Verbal Memory Tests for Spanish-Speaking Populations: A Systematic Review.

Memory constitutes one of the most frequently assessed domains in neuropsychology. The most used tests to assess verbal memory are the California Verbal Learning Test (TAVEC in Spanish), the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS), and the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT). The aim of this meta-analysis was to statistically integrate the reliability estimates of these three tests. To this end, we conducted a Systematic Review following the PRISMA checklist. We included empirical studies that reported reliability when using TAVEC (or its children's version), the AVLT or the WMS in Spanish-speaking p

Remediation of developmental dyslexia: tackling a basic memory deficit.

Remediation studies of developmental dyslexia are extremely rare. We present a single case study of an 8-year-old German developmental dyslexic boy K.H. who is hypothesized to suffer from a severe memory problem, impeding the development of normal reading functions. The memory problem especially affects the storage and access to letter-sound associations. As a consequence, the boy was initially unable to accurately and quickly name most of the 26 letters of the alphabet. A multiple-baseline across-material design with a high-frequency errorless learning procedure was set up to improve letter-n
