Nitrogen dynamics 35 years after stand-replacing fire: Aboveground pools grow as surface soil pools remain unchanged.

Natural disturbances induce variable recovery pathways, and long-term studies are key to understanding how that variability affects ecosystem function over time and across space. In subalpine forests, high-severity wildfires produce high variability in postfire tree density, but how this variability relates to nitrogen (N) cycling remains unclear. We resampled lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia) stands 35 years after stand-replacing fire and asked (1) how N concentrations, pools, and mineralization changed with increasing lodgepole pine biomass from 15 to 35 years postfire; (2) how

Investigating the Impact of Online Abortion Myths on Health Care Providers and Advocates: Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: Abortion is a common and safe medical intervention with a long history of practice in the United States. Despite this, inaccurate and misleading information persists, including falsehoods about the accessibility, legality, safety, and lived experience of abortion-related health care. Further, the prevalence and circulation of abortion myths online and offline have intensified following the overturning of Roe vs Wade in May 2022. While myths surrounding abortion have been widely documented, limited research has examined how these myths shape the everyday work of abortion health care

Health diagnosis associated with COVID-19 death in the United States: A retrospective cohort study using electronic health records.

BACKGROUND: The United States has experienced high surge in COVID-19 cases since the dawn of 2020. Identifying the types of diagnoses that pose a risk in leading COVID-19 death casualties will enable our community to obtain a better perspective in identifying the most vulnerable populations and enable these populations to implement better precautionary measures. OBJECTIVE: To identify demographic factors and health diagnosis codes that pose a high or a low risk to COVID-19 death from individual health record data sourced from the United States. METHODS: We used logistic regression models to

Cervical disc replacement: examining "real-world" utilization of an emerging technology.

OBJECTIVE: Cervical disc replacement (CDR) has emerged as an alternative to anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) for the management of cervical spondylotic pathology. While much is known about the efficacy of CDR within the constraints of a well-controlled, experimental setting, little is known about general utilization. The authors present an analysis of temporal and geographic trends in "real-world" utilization of CDR among those enrolled in private insurance plans in the US. METHODS: Eligible subjects were identified from the IBM MarketScan Databases between 2009 and 2017. Indivi

Prevalence of Parent-Reported Traumatic Brain Injury in Children and Associated Health Conditions.

IMPORTANCE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) in children results in a high number of emergency department visits and risk for long-term adverse effects. OBJECTIVES: To estimate lifetime prevalence of TBI in a nationally representative sample of US children and describe the association between TBI and other childhood health conditions. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Data were analyzed from the 2011-2012 National Survey of Children's Health, a cross-sectional telephone survey of US households with a response rate of 23%. Traumatic brain injury prevalence estimates were stratified by sociodemog

Virtual endocast of the early Oligocene Cedromus wilsoni (Cedromurinae) and brain evolution in squirrels.

Extant squirrels exhibit extensive variation in brain size and shape, but published endocranial data for living squirrels are limited, and no study has ever examined brain evolution in Sciuridae from the perspective of the fossil record to understand how this diversity emerged. We describe the first virtual endocast for a fossil sciurid, Cedromus wilsoni, which is known from a complete cranium from Wyoming (Orellan, Oligocene), and make comparisons to a diverse sample of virtual endocasts for living sciurids (N = 20). The virtual endocasts were obtained from high-resolution X-ray micro-compute

Identification and Characterization of Novel Compounds with Broad-Spectrum Antiviral Activity against Influenza A and B Viruses.

Influenza A (IAV) and influenza B (IBV) viruses are highly contagious pathogens that cause fatal respiratory disease every year, with high economic impact. In addition, IAV can cause pandemic infections with great consequences when new viruses are introduced into humans. In this study, we evaluated 10 previously described compounds with antiviral activity against mammarenaviruses for their ability to inhibit IAV infection using our recently described bireporter influenza A/Puerto Rico/8/34 (PR8) H1N1 (BIRFLU). Among the 10 tested compounds, eight (antimycin A [AmA], brequinar [BRQ], 6-azauridi

The Texas Abortion Ban and Maternal Mental Health.

IMPORTANCE: Maternal mental health disorders are among the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality. In the US, the 2022 Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization and ensuing state-level abortion restrictions have raised concerns that such policies may worsen maternal health and mental health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of the implementation of Texas Senate Bill 8 (SB8) abortion law, which banned abortions after embryonic cardiac activity in September 2021, with maternal mental health outcomes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This

Neighbourhood Deprivation Is Associated With Greater Mortality in Patients With Alcohol-Associated Liver Disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Significant health disparities persist in alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), largely driven by social determinants of health (SDOH). However, the influence of neighbourhood-level SDOH on ALD outcomes remains underexplored. In this study, we aimed to evaluate how neighbourhood-level SDOH are associated with disease burden, comorbid conditions, and mortality in individuals with ALD. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients with ALD in the Banner Health System, representing hospitals across Arizona, California, Nevada, Wyoming and Colorado, from Jan

Assisted Reproductive Technology Surveillance - United States, 2018.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Since the first U.S. infant conceived with assisted reproductive technology (ART) was born in 1981, both the use of ART and the number of fertility clinics providing ART services have increased steadily in the United States. ART includes fertility treatments in which eggs or embryos are handled in the laboratory (i.e., in vitro fertilization [IVF] and related procedures). Although the majority of infants conceived through ART are singletons, women who undergo ART procedures are more likely than women who conceive naturally to have multiple births because multiple embryos mig

A Cross-Sectional Study of the Trends in Cardiovascular Mortality Among African Americans With Hypertension.

Background and Objective In the United States, hypertension remains a significant cause of cardiovascular disease mortality and morbidity, affecting various racial and ethnic groups. High blood pressure is a common health concern, given its high frequency among all populations and racial groups in the United States; nevertheless, the condition remains untreated in most individuals. It affects a significant number of individuals in the African American community and contributes to a notable proportion of deaths. Arguably more prevalent, severe, and tends to occur earlier in African Americans co

Shoulder injuries during alpine skiing.

We retrospectively reviewed alpine skiing injuries at a destination ski resort during three seasons to characterize the incidence and types of shoulder injuries. A total of 3451 injuries in 3247 patients were reviewed. The overall injury rate was 4.44 injuries per 1000 skier-days. Injuries to the upper extremity represented 29.1% (N = 1004) of all alpine ski injuries. Injuries involving the shoulder complex (393 injuries in 350 patients) accounted for 39.1% of upper extremity injuries and 11.4% of all alpine skiing injuries. The rate of shoulder injury was 0.51 injuries per 1000 skier-days. Pa

A Collaborative In Situ Simulation-based Pediatric Readiness Improvement Program for Community Emergency Departments.

BACKGROUND: More than 30 million children are cared for across 5,000 U.S. emergency departments (EDs) each year. Most of these EDs are not facilities designed and operated solely for children. A Web-based survey provided a national and state-by-state assessment of pediatric readiness and noted a national average score was 69 on a 100-point scale. This survey noted wide variations in ED readiness with scores ranging from 61 in low-pediatric-volume EDs to 90 in the high-pediatric-volume EDs. Additionally, the mean score at the state level ranged from 57 (Wyoming) to 83 (Florida) and for individu

DRIFteRS: A dataset of drift invertebrate densities in streams and rivers across western North America, 1997-2024.

Prey availability is among the most influential and highly variable determinants of fish growth and freshwater habitat carrying capacity, yet it remains understudied compared to physical habitat variables (Ouellet et al., 2025; Rosenfeld et al., 2014; Weber et al., 2017). We often lack a clear understanding of how much food is available to fishes, how it varies spatially and temporally, and how it influences responses to restoration (Ouellet et al., 2025; Rossi et al., 2024; Wipfli et al., 2010). Drift invertebrates-the primary food source for juvenile salmonids and other drift-foraging fishes

Estimating the Population Sizes of Men Who Have Sex With Men in US States and Counties Using Data From the American Community Survey.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, male-to-male sexual transmission accounts for the greatest number of new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) diagnoses and a substantial number of sexually transmitted infections (STI) annually. However, the prevalence and annual incidence of HIV and other STIs among men who have sex with men (MSM) cannot be estimated in local contexts because demographic data on sexual behavior, particularly same-sex behavior, are not routinely collected by large-scale surveys that allow analysis at state, county, or finer levels, such as the US decennial census or the America

Strengths and opportunities to clinical trial enrollment among BIPOC, rural dwelling patients in the northwest United States: a retrospective study.

Introduction: Clinical trials investigating the safety and efficacy of experimental drugs and devices are the cornerstone of medicinal advancement. Enrolling sufficient participants in these trials is vital to ensure adequate statistical power and generalizability. Clinical trial participation is particularly low among certain populations, including medically underserved communities (i.e., rural areas) and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). Methods: A retrospective study design was used to understand patient outcomes and access/barriers to clinical trial participation in the rural
