Acute trazodone administration reduces behavioral and physiological indicators of travel-induced anxiety in dogs in a road travel model.

INTRODUCTION: Travel-induced stress and anxiety are prevalent in dogs resulting in behavioral changes that can negatively affect the overall well-being of dogs and their human travel companions. Although trazodone and gabapentin are not approved for use in dogs, they are commonly prescribed off-label for the management of situational fear and anxiety and both have demonstrated efficacy in alleviating stress during veterinary visits and noise fear. This study aimed to assess whether a single dose of gabapentin or trazodone could reduce or alleviate the physiological and behavioral signs of stre

Pain behaviours in Extremely Low Gestational Age infants.

BACKGROUND: To date, there are over 40 infant pain measures. Despite this plethora of measures, only 8 have included preterm infants and only 2 have included Extremely Low Gestational Age (ELGA; infants <28 weeks GA) in their development. Without reliable, valid and clinically useful indicators for procedural pain in ELGA infants, clinicians have no means to interpret the responses from an immature infant who may respond differently from infants of older GA. OBJECTIVE: To examine the physiological, behavioural and biochemical responses to painful and non-painful procedures in ELGA infants and

Spontaneous wound dehiscence after removal of single continuous penetrating keratoplasty suture.

PURPOSE: To determine the incidence and complications of spontaneous wound dehiscence after removal of a single continuous penetrating keratoplasty (PK) suture. DESIGN: Retrospective consecutive, noncomparative interventional case series. METHODS: Retrospective review of 324 consecutive continuous suture PKs performed between 1992 and 1999. RESULTS: Sixty-nine (21.3%) of 324 PKs reviewed had the continuous suture removed. The average interval for suture removal after PK was 24.5 +/- 15 months (range, 2.8-63.3 months). Five of the 69 eyes (7.2%) developed spontaneous wound dehiscence without

A study of factors that influence the severity of neonatal narcotic withdrawal.

1. History is unreliable in assessing maternal drug habit. Morphine was detected in significant amounts in maternal and fetal urine regardless of whether the mother was on a methadone program or whether she denied any use of heroin during the last trimester of pregnancy. 2. Infants born to drug-addicted mothers were, in general, of birthweight normal and appropriate for gestational age (i.e., greater that 10th percentile). The infants born to mothers on a methadone clinic program had a higher birthweight compared to those whose mothers were not on any methadone program. 3. In order of frequenc

Etiology, pathogenesis and treatment of habitual dislocations of the T.M. Joints [original work].

Definite treatment of any pathological condition, is based on the understanding of its correct pathogenesis and etiology. Without this basic understanding correct and lasting treatment is not possible. When there is no knowledge of exact pathogenesis and etiology, various theories and treatments are suggested by various workers. This is what exactly happened in the case of habitual dislocations of the T.M. Joints. This in term has happened because the dental surgeons and so called oral surgeons, never expanded their vision, beyond their restricted field of 20 deciduous teeth and 32 permanent t

Behavioral Assessment of Equine Relaxation Following Manual Therapy: A Pilot Study.

The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the relaxation, stress reduction and behavioral changes observed after manual therapy applied to horses exposed to racing and physical training stimulus. This descriptive approach is aimed at veterinary clinicians to evaluate the therapy process more effectively with behavioral feedback. For this purpose, the study was conducted in two different equestrian clubs in Adana (Adana Mediterranean and Suvari Equestrian Clubs) between 2023 and 2024. A total of 32 racehorses (16 Thoroughbred, 16 Arabian; 16 female, 16 male) of different ages, genders and bre

Impact of Parakinesia brachialis oscitans on limb functional recovery after stroke: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Parakinesia brachialis oscitans (PBO), involuntary elevation of the paralyzed upper limb during yawning is a rare phenomenon after ischemic stroke, but its prognostic significance remains unclear due to limited systematic studies. OBJECTIVE: To compare 3-month motor recovery between ischemic stroke patients with PBO, without PBO, and with spontaneously resolved PBO using a propensity score-matched design. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 33 patients with PBO identified in the database as the PBO group, while the non-PBO group was selected from patients with acute

A Mayo Clinic 13-year investigation of the syndrome of rapid onset ESRD among renal transplant recipients: An analysis of the implications of renal allograft biopsy results.

INTRODUCTION: We first described the syndrome of rapid onset end stage renal disease (SORO-ESRD), acute yet irreversible renal failure, in 2010. OBJECTIVE: The impact of SORO-ESRD renal allograft survival remains speculative and we plan to study this question. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of individual adult patient-level serum creatinine trajectories of ESRD patients on maintenance hemodialysis for >90 days at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, 2001-2013. RESULTS: Of 1461 ESRD patients, 149 (10%) patients including 13 renal transplant recipients (RTRs) satisfied the diagnosis of SORO-ESRD - 4 ma

[Foix-Chavany-Marie syndrome in a child caused by a head trauma].

We report the case of a traumatic Foix-Chavany-Marie syndrome (SFMC) which is the cortico-subcortical type of suprabulbar palsy. A 10-year-old boy was brain injured in a traffic accident in August 1996. He was found comatous (initial GCS = 6) without any focal neurological deficit. The hemodynamic situation was stable even though he presented two wounds of the scalp and a hemoperitoneum that required intensive perfusions. The initial CT scan elicited a frontal fracture, ischemo hemorrhagic lesions of the right frontopolar and anterior temporal cortex. On the second day, he developed on the lef

Self-injurious behavior is decreased by cyproterone acetate in adult male rhesus (Macaca mulatta).

Self-injurious behavior (SIB) presents a serious problem in laboratory macaques that cannot be socially housed for scientific reasons and among institutionalized children and adults where it is often associated with different forms of brain dysfunction. We have experienced limited success in reducing SIB in macaques by enhancing their environment with enrichment devices. Psychotropic drugs also help, but problems are associated with their use. Because sexual and aggressive behavioral problems in men have been treated with progestational drugs, we tested the efficacy of cyproterone acetate (CA,

Botulinum Toxin Versus Dextrose Prolotherapy: Which is More Effective for Temporomandibular Joint Subluxation? A Randomized Clinical Trial.

PURPOSE: Botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) therapy or dextrose prolotherapy (DP) has been used to treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. However, the superiority of one method over the other has not been studied in patients with TMJ subluxation. Therefore, this study aims to answer the following clinical question: among patients with TMJ subluxation, do those undergoing BTX-A injection into lateral pterygoid muscles, compared to those undergoing intra- and periarticular DP injections, have better outcomes in terms of locking episodes and patient satisfaction? METHODS: A randomized clinic

Temporomandibular joint dislocation in Nairobi.

BACKGROUND: Despite the diverse conservative and surgical modalities for the management of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dislocation and the controversy that surrounds them, very little has been done within the East-African setup in terms of highlighting and provoking greater interest in the epidemiology and management of TMJ dislocation. OBJECTIVE: To audit the pattern of occurrence, demographics, aetiology and enumerate the treatment modalities of TMJ dislocation at the oral and maxillofacial surgery division (OMFS) of the University of Nairobi Dental Hospital. DESIGN: Descriptive cross-se

Neural selectivity for communicative auditory signals in Phelan-McDermid syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS), a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by deletion or mutation in the SHANK3 gene, is one of the more common single-locus causes of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). PMS is characterized by global developmental delay, hypotonia, delayed or absent speech, increased risk of seizures, and minor dysmorphic features. Impairments in language and communication are one of the most consistent characteristics of PMS. Although there is considerable overlap in the social communicative deficits associated with PMS and ASD, there is a dearth of data on underlying abno

Functional dyspepsia: from human to dog, a retrospective study of 29 cases illustrating a complex entity.

BACKGROUND: Functional gastrointestinal disorders, including mostly functional dyspepsia (FD) and irritable bowel syndrome, are highly prevalent in human patients. FD is a complex condition in human gastroenterology and is characterized by abdominal discomfort, epigastric pain or burning, postprandial fullness, or early satiety. To our knowledge, such a syndrome, in the absence of organic, metabolic, or systemic causes, has not been reported in dogs. We aimed to provide a comprehensive description of the presentation of suspected canine functional dyspepsia in a retrospective case series. All

Comparison of patients with orofacial pain of different diagnostic categories.

The authors compared the pain intensity and difficulty experienced in performing activities of daily living (ADL) among 237 patients with orofacial pain. The patients underwent comprehensive examinations and recorded their subjective symptoms on a form (five items for pain intensity and six for ADL-related difficulty). On the basis of the primary diagnosis, the patients were divided into the temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ), myofascial pain (MP), neuropathic pain (NP), and fibromyalgia (FM) groups. The intensity of pain in the jaw/face, tightness in the jaw/face, pain in the neck, and

Brain effects of melanocortins.

The melanocortins (alpha, beta and gamma-melanocyte-stimulating hormones: MSHs; adrenocorticotrophic hormone: ACTH), a family of pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC)-derived peptides having in common the tetrapeptide sequence His-Phe-Arg-Trp, have progressively revealed an incredibly wide range of extra-hormonal effects, so to become one of the most promising source of innovative drugs for many, important and widespread pathological conditions. The discovery of their effects on some brain functions, independently made by William Ferrari and David De Wied about half a century ago, led to the formulation

Inhibitory effects of putative dopamine D3 receptor agonists, 7-OH-DPAT and quinpirole, on prolactin secretion in rats.

The present experiments were performed to investigate effects of (+/-)-2-(dipropylamino)-7-hydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene (7-OH-DPAT) or quinpirole (LY 171555), putative dopamine (DA) D3 receptor agonists, on serum prolactin levels in male rats. Basal prolactin levels were reduced dose-dependently by SC administration of 7-OH-DPAT or quinpirole at respective doses of 10-100 micrograms/kg and 25-250 micrograms/kg. Daily treatment with estradiol, 35 micrograms/kg/day for 3 days, increased serum prolactin levels to fourfold higher levels than those of nonprimed rats. Intraperitoneal inject
