Sensitization to reactive diluents and hardeners in epoxy resin systems. IVDK data 2002-2011. Part II: concomitant reactions.

BACKGROUND: Beside the basic resins, reactive diluents and hardeners are important sensitizers in epoxy resin systems (ERSs). Because of chemical similarities, immunological cross-reactivity may occur. OBJECTIVES: To analyse concomitant reactivity among reactive diluents and hardeners in the patients concerned, as one integral part of a research project on the sensitizing capacity of ERSs (FP-0324). METHODS: A retrospective analysis of data from the Information Network of Departments of Dermatology (IVDK), 2002-2011, was performed. RESULTS: There was close concomitant reactivity to 1,6-hexa

Sensitization to reactive diluents and hardeners in epoxy resin systems. IVDK data 2002-2011. Part I: reaction frequencies.

BACKGROUND: Epoxy resin systems (ERSs), consisting of resins, reactive diluents, and hardeners, are indispensable in many branches of industry. In order to develop less sensitizing ERS formulations, knowledge of the sensitizing properties of single components is mandatory. OBJECTIVES: To analyse the frequency of sensitization in the patients concerned, as one integral part of a research project on the sensitizing potency of epoxy resin compounds (FP-0324). METHODS: A retrospective analysis of data from the Information Network of Departments of Dermatology (IVDK), 2002-2011, and a comparison

Impact of tumour necrosis factor-α polymorphisms on irritant contact dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Genetic variations in genes coding for cytokines involved in skin inflammation may alter their expression, thus changing the susceptibility to irritant contact dermatitis (ICD). OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of polymorphisms in the cytokine genes TNFA-238 and TNFA-308 in patients with occupational ICD, and to compare it with that in controls. METHODS: In a case-control study, 478 patients with occupational ICD of the hands were genotyped for TNFA-238 and TNFA-308 polymorphisms. The results were compared with those for 393 apprentices from the same high-risk occupations

Epstein-Barr virus-associated hydroa vacciniforme-like cutaneous lymphoma in seven Chinese children.

Hydroa vacciniforme-like cutaneous lymphoma is a rare type of Epstein-Barr virus-associated lymphoma. We analyze clinicopathologic features of seven Chinese child patients with hydroa vacciniforme-like cutaneous lymphoma and determine the pathogenic association of Epstein-Barr virus with this disorder. Clinical, histologic, and immunohistochemical features were reviewed. Skin lesions were subjected to Epstein-Barr virus-encoded RNA detection by in situ hybridization. Serologic assay and quantitation of Epstein-Barr virus DNA were performed. All seven patients presented with facial vesicles, pa

Hand eczema classification: a cross-sectional, multicentre study of the aetiology and morphology of hand eczema.

BACKGROUND: Hand eczema is a long-lasting disease with a high prevalence in the background population. The disease has severe, negative effects on quality of life and sometimes on social status. Epidemiological studies have identified risk factors for onset and prognosis, but treatment of the disease is rarely evidence based, and a classification system for different subdiagnoses of hand eczema is not agreed upon. Randomized controlled trials investigating the treatment of hand eczema are called for. For this, as well as for clinical purposes, a generally accepted classification system for han

[Extravasation of cytostatic agents: a serious complication of oncological treatment].

The extravasation of cytostatic agents is a known, serious situation that can easily occur and cause chronic, irreversible damage. The incidence of extravasation ranges from 0.1 %-6.5 %, according to different studies. Many cases of extravasation can be prevented by systematizing the administration techniques for cytostatic agents. We present the clinical and histological characteristics of a series of patients with extravasation lesions. Included in the study were all patients treated with chemotherapy who developed localized lesions in the area of the cytostatic injection after extravasation

Neutrophil dermatosis of the dorsal hands.

Neutrophil dermatosis of the dorsal hands (NDDH) is a recently described skin manifestation regarded as a subset of acute febrile neutrophilic dermatotis (Sweet syndrome). We describe 5 cases with pustular and ulcerative plaques and/or bullae and vesicles of the dorsal hands. Three of the patients also had skin changes at sides other than the hands. Associated conditions were found in two patients, one patient treated with hemo-dialysis for chronic glomerulonephritis, and one patient had suffered from a streptococcal tonsillitis prior to the eruption. Two of the patients had fever, two had neu

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis caused by epoxy diacrylate in ultraviolet-light-cured paint, and bisphenol A in dental composite resin.

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) caused by epoxy di(meth)acrylates or bisphenol A is rare. Here 2 such cases are reported. A dental assistant had allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) caused by bisphenol A contained in dental composite resin (DCR) products based on epoxy dimethacrylate. The contact allergy was verified by allergic patch test reactions to bisphenol A and 2 DCRs. The DCRs giving allergic reactions were analyzed, and 0.014-0.015% of bisphenol A was detected. Occupational ACD caused by bisphenol A in dental composite resins has not been described before. The other patient was a male

An evaluation of prescription device moisturizers.

Moisturization of the skin is important for both medical and cosmetic purposes. The development of prescription device moisturizers, receiving 510K approval on the basis of the physical reduction in transepidermal water loss, provided a new dermatologic category. This investigator-blinded research utilized a split body model in 60 subjects to examine the effect of a traditional moisturizer as compared to a prescription device moisturizer in the treatment of mild to moderate symmetrical eczema of the arms or legs. This study demonstrated parity between the two moisturizers based on subject and

The effectiveness of a skin care program for the prevention of contact dermatitis in health care workers (the Healthy Hands Project): study protocol for a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Health care workers (HCW) are at high risk for developing occupational hand dermatitis (HD) due to frequent exposure to 'wet work'. Amongst HCWs, nurses are at highest risk, with an estimated point prevalence of HD ranging between 12 and 30%. The burden of disease is high with chronicity, sick leave, risk of unemployment and impaired quality of life. Despite evidence from the medical literature on the risk factors and the importance of skin care in the prevention of HD, in practice, compliance to skin care protocols are below 30%. New preventive strategies are obviously needed. ME

Integrated Clinical Trial and Molecular Profiling Reveals Immune Drivers of Chronic Hand Eczema.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hand eczema (CHE) is a debilitating skin condition characterized by pain, itch, and chronic inflammation, with a complex multifactorial origin. Its diverse presentations, including overlapping traits of atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, and psoriasis, make diagnosis and treatment particularly challenging. The underlying immune mechanisms of CHE still need to be investigated. METHODS: Here we conducted a comprehensive molecular profiling of CHE patients, enrolled without prior selection on etiology and morphology, and performed a phase 2b randomized, multicenter, doubl

The prevalence of hand dermatitis among intensive care unit nurses.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers are at high risk of developing occupational hand dermatitis (HD) due to their frequent exposure to wet-work and use of gloves. Complaints of HD may interfere with work and cause loss of work productivity, or sick leave, and may have impact on job pleasure and performing daily activities. The prevalence of HD among intensive care unit (ICU) nurses is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the point prevalence and the 1-year prevalence of HD among ICU nurses, and to determine the impact of HD on work and daily activities. METHOD: A questionnaire-based cross-sectiona
