BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Income assistance is critical to the health and wellbeing of socio-economically marginalized people who use illicit drugs (PWUD). However, past literature paradoxically identifies unintended increases in drug-related harm coinciding with synchronized payments that may magnify signals for drug use. The scope of such harm has not been fully characterized among non-institutionalized populations. This study examined socio-demographic, health and drug use-related correlates of payment-coincident drug-related harm.
DESIGN: This observational study uses data from prospective com

BACKGROUND: We previously demonstrated that unidentified aliased patients, John Doe's (DOEs), are one of the highest risk and most medically fragile populations of injured patients. Aliasing can result in misplaced information and confusion that must be overcome by health care professionals. DOE alias use is institutionally dependent and not uniform, which may lead to significant variation in perception of confusion and error. We sought to determine if health care practitioners experience confusion that may result in compromised care when caring for injured DOE patients.

BACKGROUND: In the last decade, Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS) has taken strides in research and training to improve healthcare through collaborative training and research programs. However, there is limited data on the trends of MakCHS faculty contributions to research and on faculty growth to take leading roles in health research. This paper reviews MakCHS faculty research publications over 15.5 years and outlines possible strategies to enhance faculty research outputs.

PURPOSE AND BACKGROUND: Acoustic signals are transmitted through the external and middle ear mechanically to the cochlea where they are transduced into electrical impulse for further transmission via the auditory nerve. The auditory nerve encodes the acoustic sounds that are conveyed to the auditory brainstem. Multiple brainstem nuclei, the cochlea, the midbrain, the thalamus, and the cortex constitute the central auditory system. In clinical practice, auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) to simple stimuli such as click or tones are widely used. Recently, complex stimuli or complex auditory bra

INTRODUCTION: The ongoing emergence of new synthetic substances that are used as drugs is a constant challenge to public health. Emerging drugs is the concept used in this research project to define the emergence of new psychoactive substances at a given time, a specific context and group, the reemergence of others that some epidemiologists considered had lost their prevalence, and the sudden prevalence of drugs that had low levels of consumption.
METHOD: This research project was carried out using an empirical-analytical approach using a mixed methods study. The convenience sample was made u

UNLABELLED: To review the literature on the MNA to Spring 2006, we searched MEDLINE, Web of Science and Scopus, and did a manual search in J Nutr Health Aging, Clin Nutr, Eur J Clin Nutr and free online available publications.
VALIDATION AND VALIDITY: The MNA was validated against two principal criteria, clinical status and comprehensive nutrition assessment using principal component and discriminant analysis. The MNA shortform (MNA-SF) was developed and validated to allow a 2-step screening process. The MNA and MNA-SF are sensitive, specific, and accurate in identifying nutrition risk.

BACKGROUND: The benefit of physical exercise in ageing and particularly in frailty has been the aim of recent research. Moreover, physical activity in the elderly is associated with a decreased risk of mortality, of common chronic illnesses (i.e. cardiovascular disease or osteoarthritis) and of institutionalization as well as with a delay in functional decline. Additionally, very recent research has shown that, despite its limitations, physical exercise is associated with a reduced risk of dementia, Alzheimer disease or mild cognitive decline. Nevertheless, the effect of physical exercise as a

BACKGROUND: The rising prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and other diseases associated with dementia, imposes significant burden to various stakeholders who care for the elderly. Management of AD is complicated by multiple factors including disease-specific features which make it difficult to diagnose accurately during milder stages. Florbetapir F18 positron emission tomography (florbetapir-PET) is an approved imaging tool used to capture beta-amyloid neuritic plaque density in brains of cognitively impaired adults undergoing evaluation for AD and other causes of cognitive impairment. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The published data on the relationship between dysphagia and both outcome and complications after acute stroke have been inconclusive. We examined the relationship between these, using bedside assessment and videofluoroscopic examination.
METHODS: We prospectively studied 121 consecutive patients admitted with acute stroke. A standardized bedside assessment was performed by a physician. We performed videofluoroscopy blinded to this assessment within 3 days of stroke onset and within a median time of 24 hours of the bedside evaluations. The presence of aspiration was re

BACKGROUND: There are numerous studies about morbidity and mortality, technical complications and in-hospital factors after proximal femoral fracture surgery in the elderly. Although experienced clinicians are often able to make an accurate prediction, little information is available about the factors that allow early determination of whether a patient may return to the community. The present study aimed to provide that information and, hence, allow better use of health resources.
METHODS: At Westmead Hospital a prospective study was conducted of 304 patients with a proximal femoral fracture

BACKGROUND: Institutionalization has shown contradictory effects on the mental health of orphaned and separated children and adolescents (OSCA) in sub-Saharan Africa. There is a paucity of data surrounding the cost-effectiveness of different care environments for improving OSCA's mental health.
AIMS OF THE STUDY: The goal of this analysis was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of Charitable Children's Institutions (orphanages) compared to family-based settings serving OSCA in East Africa in terms of USD/unit reduction in mental health diagnoses (depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress diso

INTRODUCTION: Awareness disorders in Alzheimer's disease still remains unclear despite much research regarding this phenomenon. Papers report various and contrasted results with varying frequency from one study to another. Hence, the interest in awareness in Alzheimer's disease remains limited. Nevertheless, this symptom is closely associated with caregivers' burden and increases the patient's dependency, since the patient is unable to avoid dangers, requiring some care services or institutionalization The purpose of this current review is to recall the main neuro-anatomical and theoretical ba

Hippocampus volumetry currently is the best-established imaging biomarker for AD. However, the effect of multicenter acquisition on measurements of hippocampus volume needs to be explicitly considered when it is applied in large clinical trials, for example by using mixed-effects models to take the clustering of data within centers into account. The marker needs further validation in respect of the underlying neurobiological substrate and potential confounds such as vascular disease, inflammation, hydrocephalus, and alcoholism, and with regard to clinical outcomes such as cognition but also to

OBJECTIVE: Traditional rigid posterior lumbar fusion frequently induces adjacent segment disease due to non-physiological stress concentrations. While dynamic and semi-rigid posterior stabilization systems were introduced to preserve segmental motion and share biomechanical loads, the expanding global literature remains fragmented. This study aims to perform a comprehensive bibliometric and computational science mapping analysis to decode the global intellectual architecture, collaborative networks, and shifting research frontiers of dynamic posterior spinal stabilization from 1999 to June 202
