COVID-19 social interventions were associated with amplified, not attenuated, indoor source pollutant-respiratory health associations: a six-year time-series analysis in Xi'an, China.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic triggered unprecedented social interventions that altered ambient air quality, population behavior, and healthcare-seeking. Whether these interventions modified the short-term association between air pollutants and respiratory health, and in which direction, remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a time-series study of daily respiratory outpatient visits (ICD-10: J00-J99, R04-R07, and R09) from a tertiary hospital in Xi'an, China, from January 2020 to December 2025. The study period was stratified into three COVID-19 phases: strict control (2020-2022), transi

Predicting spatio-temporal dynamics of dengue using INLA (integrated nested laplace approximation) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

INTRODUCTION: Dengue is a mosquito-borne disease caused by the dengue virus, primarily transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Its incidence fluctuates due to spatial and temporal factors, necessitating robust modeling approaches for prediction and risk mapping. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to develop a spatio-temporal Bayesian model for predicting dengue incidence, integrating climatic, sociodemographic, and environmental factors to improve outbreak forecasting. METHODS: An ecological study was conducted in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia (January 2017-December 2022) u

The enhancive effect of the 2014-2016 El Niño-induced drought on the control of soil-transmitted helminthiases without anthelmintics: A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminthiases (STHs) are common in tropical and subtropical regions. Southern Thailand experiences an extended rainy season, leading to persistently moist soil. This condition supports the life cycle of STHs, hindering effective control due to reinfection and low drug efficacy. We implemented a novel STH control strategy during the dry season aimed at decreasing reinfection rates without enhancing sanitation or hygiene practices. However, there were unexpected, prolonged droughts linked to El Niño events from 2014 to 2016. Additionally, we assessed the effects of t

Environmental determinants of West Nile virus vector abundance at the wildlife-livestock interface.

The diversity and abundance of vectors are essential parameters in the transmission dynamics of West Nile virus (WNV) between its avian reservoirs and clinically susceptible mammalian species. Knowing the determinants of vector abundance could be thus useful in preventing West Nile fever (WNF) cases and associated socio-economic impact. We designed a survey at the wildlife-livestock interface to test the hypothesis that variations in environmental favourability between anthropized and wild scenarios modulate WNV vector abundance and transmission risk. In a continental Mediterranean region wher

Seasonal Variation and Geographical Distribution of COVID-19 across Nigeria (March 2020-July 2021).

Globally, the novel corona virus infection has continued to witness a growing number of cases since December 2019 when the outbreak was discovered and noted in China. Despite this has not been well studied for the case of COVID-19, human contact, public moveableness and environmental variables could have an impact onairborne'spropagation and virus continuance, such as influenza virus. This study aimed to determine the seasonal variation and geographical distribution of COVID-19 across Nigeria. An internet based archival research design was employed for this study on the seasonal variation and

Socioeconomic disparity in the association between fine particulate matter exposure and papillary thyroid cancer.

BACKGROUND: Limited data exists suggesting that cumulative exposure to air pollution in the form of fine particulate matter (aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm [PM2.5]) may be associated with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), although this relationship has not been widely established. This study aims to evaluate the association between PM2.5 and PTC and determine the subgroups of patients who are at the highest risk of PTC diagnosis. METHODS: Under IRB approval, we conducted a case-control study of adult patients (age ≥ 18) newly diagnosed with PTC between 1/2013-12/2016 across a single health ca

Impact of ambient temperature on adverse pregnancy outcomes: a birth cohort study in Fuzhou, China.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have identified a series of specific adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) linked with temperature extremes. Most of them focus on preterm birth, low birth weight, and stillbirth. Other possible adverse outcomes were under-researched. This study aimed to investigate the impact of ambient temperature on maternal complications, white blood cell count (WBC), newborn hearing, and neonatal jaundice. METHODS: A total of 418 participants were recruited from Fuzhou Maternity & Child Healthcare Hospital in 2016. Participants were invited to fill out a structured questionnaire.

Moderate Rainfall and High Humidity During the Monsoon Season, Negligence in Using Malaria Protection Methods and High Proportion of Mild Symptomatic Patients Were the Driving Forces for Upsurge of Malaria Cases in 2018 Among Tea Tribe Populations in Endemic Dolonibasti Health Sub-center, Udalguri District, Assam State, North-East India.

Malaria elimination is a global priority, which India has also adopted as a target. Despite the malaria control efforts like long-lasting insecticidal nets distribution, rounds of indoor residual spray, the introduction of bi-valent rapid diagnostic tests and artemisinin combination therapy, malaria remained consistent in Dolonibasti sub-center of Orang block primary health center (BPHC) under the district Udalguri, Assam state followed by abrupt rise in cases in 2018. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the factors driving the malaria transmission in the outbreak area of Dolonibasti sub-center

Short-term effects of ambient air pollution on daily emergency room visits for abdominal pain: a time-series study in Wuhan, China.

Short-term exposure to ambient air pollution has been proven to result in respiratory, cardiovascular, and digestive diseases, leading to increased emergency room visits (ERVs). Abdominal pain complaints provide a large proportion of the ERVs, as yet few studies have focused on the correlations between ambient air pollution and abdominal pain, especially in emergency departments within China. Daily data for daily ERVs were collected in Wuhan, China (from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2018), including air pollution concentration (SO2, NO2, PM2.5, PM10, CO, and O3), and meteorological variable

Associations between congenital heart disease and air pollutants at different gestational weeks: a time-series analysis.

Exposure to air pollution during pregnancy has been linked to birth defects. But the directions of studies on the associations between air pollutants exposure and effect on the incidence of congenital heart disease (CHDs) were inconsistent. To date, few studies were concentrated on the effects of both particulate matter and gaseous air pollutant exposure on CHDs across the full gestational week simultaneously. Our study aimed to investigate the critical exposure windows for each air pollutant throughout 40 gestational weeks. Data on CHDs, air pollution, and meteorological factors from 2013 to

From the One Health Perspective: Schistosomiasis Japonica and Flooding.

Schistosomiasis is a water-borne parasitic disease distributed worldwide, while schistosomiasis japonica localizes in the People's Republic of China, the Philippines, and a few regions of Indonesia. Although significant achievements have been obtained in these endemic countries, great challenges still exist to reach the elimination of schistosomiasis japonica, as the occurrence of flooding can lead to several adverse consequences on the prevalence of schistosomiasis. This review summarizes the influence of flooding on the transmission of schistosomiasis japonica and interventions responding to

Effects of shade location and protection from direct solar radiation on the behavior of Holstein cows.

Two trials (E1 and E2) were performed to assess the behavior of eight Holstein dairy cows with 367 ± 58 kg of body weight and 10.52 ± 0.08 kg of milk yield. A 4 × 4 Latin square design (four periods of lactation and four levels of solar blockage) with four paddocks was used. Each paddock contained a wood shading structure covered with a cloth that blocked 30% (T1), 50% (T2), 70% (T3), or 100% (T4) of direct solar radiation. In the first trial (E1) each shade structure was located approximately 40 m from the feeder and water troughs; in the second trial (E2), the distance was reduced to 5 m. Ai
