Examination of the migration of first instar larvae of the parasite OEstrus ovis (Linne 1761) [Diptera: OEstridae] in the upper respiratory tract of artificially infected lambs and daily measurements of the kinetics of blood eosinophilia and mucosal inflammatory response associated with repeated infection.

Twelve lambs were divided into two groups: Group C control, non-infected, and Group O infected once a week for 5 weeks with OEstrus ovis L1 through the same nostril. The first objective of this experiment was to check whether larvae moving through a given nostril remain in the same side nasal cavity or might to spread in both nasal cavities. It has been observed that larvae invade and spread through the entire nasal cavities. The only possible passage way between both sides is via the choanae and velum palatinum. The second objective was to follow the kinetics of blood eosinophilia. A primary

Goat warble fly infestation by Przhevalskiana silenus (Diptera: Oestridae): immunoepidemiologic survey in the Basilicata region (southern Italy).

The demonstration of serological cross-reactivity between the Hypoderma lineatum antigen and anti-Przhevalskiana silenus antibodies led us to prepare an immunological test (ELISA) for an early diagnosis of goat warble fly infestation. Using the Hypodermosis ELISA-Kit (Vétoquinol Diagnostic, France) produced for the immunodiagnosis of bovine hypodermosis, an epidemiological assay was carried out in Basilicata region where goat breeding is very common and no data are reported with regards to the distribution of goat warble fly infestation. Out of a total of 1,100 flocks and 41,200 goats, 105 ran

An unusual retinal pigment epitheliopathy endemic to the island of Guam.

An unusual retinal pigment epitheliopathy resembling ophthalmomyiasis interna posterior (OMI) is endemic to Guam. Sixteen percent of a sample of the indigenous population were found to have the retinopathy. Fifty-two percent of a group of individuals suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/Parkinsonism-dementia complex (ALS/PDC) were found to have the same retinopathy. Although the retinal appearance is similar to that caused by a subretinal parasite, a definite etiology has not been identified. Three case reports are presented as samples of the clinical presentation of the condition.

De novo genome assembly, annotation, and characterization of chemosensory genes in the camel ked (Hippobosca camelina).

BACKGROUND: Hippobosca camelina (camel ked) is an obligate hematophagous ectoparasite that infests camels. Hematophagy inflicts painful bites leading to myiasis, anemia and pathogen transmission such as Candidatus Anaplasma camelii. A genome assembly for this biting flies is currently unavailable, limiting understanding of its genetics, including the chemosensory system. RESULTS: The assembly size for Hippobosca camelina female is 135.6 Mb with 17.08% repeated regions, an N50 of 1.2 Mb, a total of 2,182 contigs, a GC content of 33.5% and compleasm (Busco) completeness of 95.38% with the dipte

The impact of temperature on the life cycle of Gasterophilus pecorum in northwest China.

BACKGROUND: The departure of the mature larvae of the horse stomach bot fly from the host indicates the beginning of a new infection period. Gasterophilus pecorum is the dominant bot fly species in the desert steppe of the Kalamaili Nature Reserve (KNR) of northwest China as a result of its particular biological characteristics. The population dynamics of G. pecorum were studied to elucidate the population development of this species in the arid desert steppe. METHODS: Larvae in the freshly excreted feces of tracked Przewalski's horses (Equus przewalskii) were collected and recorded. The larv

Successful Treatment of Severe Tungiasis in Pigs Using a Topical Aerosol Containing Chlorfenvinphos, Dichlorphos and Gentian Violet.

BACKGROUND: In endemic communities, zoonotic tungiasis, a severe skin disease caused by penetrating female sand fleas, is a public health hazard causing significant human and animal morbidity. No validated drugs are currently available for treatment of animal tungiasis. Due to the reservoir in domestic animals, integrated management of human and animal tungiasis is required to avert its negative effects. METHODS AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A topical aerosol containing chlorfenvinphos 4.8%, dichlorphos 0.75% and gentian violet 0.145% licensed to treat tick infestations, myiasis and wound sepsis in

Multi-target disruption of cuticular lipid homeostasis and cellular immunity by 2,6-dimethylphenol in the blowfly Lucilia sericata.

The blow fly Lucilia sericata is a species of major medical and veterinary importance, functioning both as a causative agent of myiasis and as a beneficial organism in maggot debridement therapy. Increasing resistance to conventional insecticides highlights the need for alternative compounds targeting fundamental physiological processes. In this study, we investigated the insecticidal and physiological effects of 2,6-dimethylphenol (2,6-DMP), a lipophilic phenolic compound, with particular emphasis on its impact on cuticular lipid homeostasis and immune cell integrity. Topical application of 2

Climate change-driven range shifts in a cosmopolitan synanthropic insect: global habitat suitability modeling and projections for Clogmia albipunctata.

Climate change is fundamentally reshaping the geographic distributions of species worldwide, with particular implications for synanthropic organisms closely associated with human environments. Clogmia albipunctata (Diptera: Psychodidae), commonly known as the drain fly, is a cosmopolitan insect of increasing concern due to its ability to establish populations across diverse climatic regions and its documented role as a mechanical vector of human pathogens. We employed maximum entropy (MaxEnt) species distribution modeling to project the global habitat suitability of C. albipunctata under prese

A case report: A rare case of infant gastrointestinal canthariasis caused by larvae of Lasioderma serricorne (Fabricius, 1792) (Coleoptera: Anobiidae).

BACKGROUND: Canthariasis is a disease of humans caused by the infestation of beetle larvae. It is the second important insectal disease after myiasis. Several species of beetles are reported to cause the disease in gastrointestinal tract, urogenital system, nasal sinuses, ears and faces of mammals. The cigarette beetle Lasioderma serricorne is a widespread and destructive pest that usually feeds on tobacco, tea, beans, cereal grains, and animal and plant specimen. While there was no previous evidence of human infestation by this worm, we report the first case of L. serricorne infestation in a

Tissue damage and cytotoxic effects of Tagetes minuta essential oil against Lucilia cuprina.

The blowfly Lucilia cuprina has great medico-sanitary and veterinary importance due to the ability of its larval form to develop in decaying organic matter, parasitizing vertebrates. Fly eradication is challenging and the essential oil (EO) of Tagetes minuta (TMEO) have been reported to have therapeutic properties. This study aimed to determine the activity of EO from the aerial parts of T. minuta against third instar larvae (L3) of L. cuprina. Groups of 20 L3 were placed on filter paper, which were impregnated with varying concentrations (0.19; 0.39; 0.79; 1.59; 2.38; 3.18; 4.77; and 6.36 μL/

Molecular characterization of bot flies, Oestrus spp., (Diptera, Oestridae), from domestic and wild Bovidae hosts.

The identification of Oestrus spp. larvae from Bovidae hosts is a difficult task due to the great morphological similarity between species. The lack of unambiguous identification criteria could have also serious epidemiological implications since domestic and wild hosts are sympatric in many natural areas. In order to accurately identify the Oestrus parasitizing hosts, we characterized two different genetic markers, 28S (rRNA) and COI, in larvae collected from domestic sheep and goats, European mouflon and Iberian ibex. Our sequence analyses demonstrate that all samples, except those from Iber

Inhibition of growth of Lucilia cuprina larvae using serum from sheep vaccinated with first-instar larval antigens.

Whole first-instar Lucilia cuprina larvae were homogenised and sequentially extracted with a series of buffers of progressively more severe solubilising power. The final extract, using a buffer containing 6 M-urea, was fractionated by preparative isoelectric focussing. At each step in this process, protein fractions were tested in sheep vaccination trials for their ability to induce immune responses affecting the growth of L. cuprina larvae which fed on the sera from vaccinated sheep. One isoelectric focussing fraction (pH 5.9-6.7) containing a number of larval proteins induced an immune respo

Parasitic control in intensive vs. non-intensive systems--ruminants.

The acquisition and intensity of infection with gastrointestinal nematodes and with Oestrus ovis are compared over 2 years in sheep grazed intensively (26-36 sheep ha-1) or non-intensively (12 sheep ha-1) in the winter rainfall Overberg region of South Africa. Sheep grazing intensively on grass/legume pastures, spray irrigated in summer, acquired massive mixed infections of Trichostrongylus, Haemonchus and Teladorsagia. Infections were fatal for sucking lambs. Lambs from ewes grazed non-intensively on dry land lucerne in winter became infected with Nematodirus and then with Teladorsagia and Tr
