Understanding medication errors: discussion of a case involving a urinary catheter implicated in a wrong route error.

Medication errors represent a failure in the medication use process leading to an increase in morbidity and mortality. In an effort to standardize reporting, evaluating, and trending of medication errors, the National Coordinating Council for Medication Error Reporting and Prevention (NCC MERP) developed and maintains a medication error taxonomy. A case study involving a medication intended for administration via rectal tube and inadvertently given through a Foley catheter is discussed using the NCC MERP medication error taxonomy and critiqued using recent national findings. Evaluation of a microtiter latex agglutination test for histoplasmosis.

Experiments were designed to evaluate a Microtiter latex agglutination (Micro-LA) test, as a serological aid in the diagnosis of histoplasmosis, and to compare this test with the conventional microtiter-complement fixation (CF) test for histoplasmosis. Sera tested were from cases of acute and chronic pulmonary and disseminated histoplasmosis, as well as from individuals not having histoplasmosis. Ninety-seven percent of the cases of acute pulmonary histoplasmosis had positive Micro-LA tests, whereas 91% had positive CF tests. Ninety-six percent of the patients having chronic pulmonary histopla

Frugal innovation in adaptive seating for a child with cerebral palsy (Gross Motor Function Classification System Level V) in a resource-limited setting: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) classified as Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) Level V results in severe postural impairment and complete dependence on external support for upright sitting. In low- and middle-income countries such as South Africa, access to specialised adaptive seating devices within the public healthcare system is severely limited. Frugal innovation the adaptation of readily available, affordable resources to meet complex rehabilitation needs represents a promising strategy to address this gap. Pilot-scale production and characterization of liquid fuel from mixed non-recyclable plastics for potential steam-generation applications.

Post-sorting non-recyclable plastic residues pose significant management challenges due to the limitations of mechanical recycling. This study demonstrates a novel, direct vacuum-assisted pilot-scale batch pyrolysis of mixed plastic rejects dominated by polypropylene (PP, ≥45 wt%), low-density polyethylene (LDPE, ≥45 wt%), polystyrene (PS, ≤5 wt%), and high-density polyethylene (HDPE, ≤5 wt%) in an insulated 1,000 L reactor without continuous inert-gas purging. Under optimized operating conditions (30 min air pre-evacuation at 15-20 kPa, 20 kg feed loading, LPG heat input at ∼25% maximum flow,

Orthogonal in-line microscopy coupled with SP ICP-MS for the quantitative analysis of microparticles.

BACKGROUND: Single particle inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (SP ICP-MS) has become the method of choice for the characterisation of nanoparticles, but its application to micrometre-sized particles remains limited due to size-dependent transport efficiencies (TE). This imposes inherent limitations and prevents the accurate counting of particles as well as the reliable analysis of size distributions. Consequently, the quantitative analysis of entities such as microplastics or cells remains restricted. This study addresses this limitation by developing and introducing an integrated a

Acoustically active poly(tBMA) floral nanocages for ultrasound-guided spatiotemporal cargo release.

Clinically approved ultrasound contrast agents, including microbubbles and nanobubbles, suffer from limited circulation stability, restricted extravasation, and dependence on exogenous gas cores, necessitating structurally inherent cavitation-active nanocarriers. Herein, we report acoustically active mesoporous polymeric nanoparticles (MNPs), also hereby referred to as 'Floral nanocages' synthesized via diffusion-guided seeded emulsion polymerization of tert-butyl methacrylate (tBMA) within polystyrene (PS) templates, where confined polymerization-induced phase separation generated floral-like

Activation of Molecular Oxygen and Selective Oxidation with Metal Complexes.

ConspectusSelective oxidation with molecular oxygen is one of the most appealing approaches to functionalization of organic molecules and, yet at the same time, one of the most challenging reactions facing organic synthesis due to poor selectivity control. Molecular oxygen is a green and inexpensive oxidant, producing water as the only byproduct in oxidation. Not surprisingly, it has been used in the manufacturing of many commodity chemicals in the industry. It is also nature's choice of oxidant and drives a variety of oxidation reactions critical to life and various other biologic processes.

Standardized protocol for laboratory rearing and breeding of the Lymnaeidae snail, Radix natalensis (Krauss, 1848).

Freshwater lymnaeid snails are involved in the transmission of fascioliasis in tropical and subtropical Africa, Asia, as well as in temperate regions. This study improved and standardized laboratory rearing and breeding of first-generation (F1) R. natalensis using field-collected F0 snails. Ninety field-collected R. natalensis adult snails with shell heights of 4-5 mm were divided into three experimental treatment groups: A, B, and C. Each experimental treatment group comprised of ten (10) 2L containers, with each containing 3 snails. Group A, the control, was fed Elodea sp. weed powder and Cy

Variability in Donor Lung Culture and Relative Humidity Impact the Stability of 2009 Pandemic H1N1 Influenza Virus on Nonporous Surfaces.

Respiratory viruses can be transmitted by multiple modes, including contaminated surfaces, commonly referred to as fomites. Efficient fomite transmission requires that a virus remain infectious on a given surface material over a wide range of environmental conditions, including different relative humidities. Prior work examining the stability of influenza viruses on surfaces has relied upon virus grown in media or eggs, which does not mimic the composition of virus-containing droplets expelled from the human respiratory tract. In this study, we examined the stability of the 2009 pandemic H1N1

Histological Study on the Thickness of Gray Matter at the Summit and Bottom of Folium in Different Age Groups of Bangladeshi People.

Context The cerebellum is a part of the hindbrain and consists of cortical gray matter (GM) at the surface and a medullary core of white matter (WM). The GM contains a cell body of neurons that helps process and transmit any command type through nerve fibers found in the WM. The main functions of GM in the central nervous system empower persons to control motor activity, recollection, and passion. So, this research aims to assess the thickness of GM at the summit and bottom of folia by histologically studying the cerebellum cortex. Methods The collection of data was a descriptive type of cross

Novel role for the Streptococcus pneumoniae toxin pneumolysin in the assembly of biofilms.

UNLABELLED: Streptococcus pneumoniae is an important commensal and pathogen responsible for almost a million deaths annually in children under five. The formation of biofilms by S. pneumoniae is important in nasopharyngeal colonization, pneumonia, and otitis media. Pneumolysin (Ply) is a toxin that contributes significantly to the virulence of S. pneumoniae and is an important candidate as a serotype-independent vaccine target. Having previously demonstrated that a luxS knockout mutant was unable to form early biofilms and expressed less ply mRNA than the wild type, we conducted a study to inv

Control of the Aedes vectors of the dengue viruses and Wuchereria bancrofti: the French Polynesian experience.

In most of the 130 islands of French Polynesia, the stenotopic mosquitoes Aedes aegypti (the main local vector for the viruses causing dengue) and Aedes polynesiensis (the main local vector of Wuchereria bancrofti) share many breeding sites in water containers such as discarded cans, coconut shells, buckets and water-storage pots and drums. In addition to selective application of insecticides, non-polluting methods of controlling these mosquitoes have been evaluated during the last decade in two main ecological situations: (1) villages, where Aedes breeding sites are typically peridomestic; an

Bio-artificial liver from cultured human foetal hepatocytes: feasibility and prospects.

BACKGROUND: Conventional therapy for acute liver failure has not been able to improve survival beyond 40%. Apart from liver transplantation, the most promising development in this field is the utilization of cultured hepatocytes to make 'bio-artificial liver support systems' as a 'bridge to transplantation' or ideally as a 'bridge to total recovery'. This study examines the feasibility of culturing foetal hepatocytes without the use of growth factors and formulating a bio-artificial liver support device in our set-up. METHODS: Foetal hepatocytes were harvested from the liver obtained from mid

Health impacts of micro- and nanoplastics in humans: systematic review of in vivo evidence.

BACKGROUND: Microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) are pervasive environmental contaminants with potential human health implications. Although laboratory models implicate MNPs in oxidative stress, inflammation, and endocrine disruption, a comprehensive synthesis of direct in vivo human evidence is lacking. We aimed to systematically review studies measuring MNPs in living human subjects and summarise associated health findings. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane and Embase through 26 December 2024. Two investigators independently screened and selected

Evaluation of Elaeagnus angustifolia extract in promoting osteogenesis of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells through modulation of intracellular signaling pathways.

BACKGROUND: Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) are promising candidates for bone tissue engineering; however, the limited bioactivity of synthetic scaffolds such as polycaprolactone (PCL) restricts their osteoinductive potential. Incorporation of natural plant-derived bioactives may enhance scaffold functionality. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether incorporation of Elaeagnus angustifolia extract into electrospun PCL scaffolds could enhance osteogenic differentiation of ADSCs in vitro. METHODS: Electrospun PCL scaffolds were fabricated and modified by overnight immersion i

A novel method of fabricating dynamic, heterogenous benchtop lateral and third ventricle phantoms from MRI of hydrocephalus patients: a verification and validation study.

BACKGROUND: Investigation of the failure of shunts used to treat hydrocephalus has been a topic of research for several decades, though it is difficult to understand the role of heterogeneous patient ventriculomegaly shifts over time. In this work, we present the design, verification, and validation of a novel benchtop model of the human lateral and third ventricles. METHODS: 3D models were rendered from MRI of pre-revision hydrocephalic patients (n = 6), printed in hollow High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) molds, and injected with silicone rubber allowed to rotationally cure for three hours.
