Current therapies for actinic keratosis.

Actinic keratosis (AK) is a very common skin disease caused by chronic sun damage, which in 75% of cases arises on chronically sun-exposed areas, such as face, scalp, neck, hands, and forearms. AKs must be considered an early squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) for their probable progression into invasive SCC. For this reason, all AK should be treated, and clinical follow-up is recommended. The aims of treatment are: (i) to clinically eradicate evident and subclinical lesions, (ii) to prevent their evolution into SCC, and (iii) to reduce the number of relapses. Among available treatments, it is poss

Alopecia areata: What's new in epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and therapeutic options?

Alopecia areata (AA) is a common and stressful disorder that results in hair loss, and resistant to treatment in some cases. Experimental and clinical evidence suggests that AA is caused by autoimmune attack against the hair follicles. The precise pathomechanism, however, remains unknown. Here, we focus on the recent progress in multidisciplinary approaches to the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and new treatments of AA in 996 publications from January 2010 to July 2016, and provide an overview of the current understanding in clinical management and research directions.

Potential antipsoriatic effect of chondroitin sulfate through inhibition of NF-κB and STAT3 in human keratinocytes.

Chondroitin sulfate (CS) is a natural glycosaminoglycan, formed by the 1-3 linkage of d-glucuronic acid to N-acetylgalactosamine, present in the extracellular matrix. It is used as a slow acting disease modifying agent in the treatment of osteoarthritis, and part of its beneficial effects are due to its antiinflammatory properties that result from an inhibitory effect on NF-κB signaling pathway. This ability raises the hypothesis that CS might be effective in other chronic inflammatory processes such as psoriasis, in which a deregulation of NF-κB is a key feature. In addition, psoriasis is cha

[Confocal laser scanning microscopy].

The diagnosis of skin diseases relies strongly on clinical inspection and the use of invasive diagnostic procedures. Routine histology requires the removal of tissue for microscopic evaluation, which is associated with pain, and risk of infection as well as scar formation. In the past 15 years a number of non-invasive diagnostic devices have been evaluated for use in clinical and investigative dermatology. A number of studies have assessed the applicability of confocal laser scanning microscopy (LSM) as an optical diagnostic device in dermatology. By correlating LSM images with established fea

Machine-learning classification of non-melanoma skin cancers from image features obtained by optical coherence tomography.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: A number of publications have suggested that optical coherence tomography (OCT) has the potential for non-invasive diagnosis of skin cancer. Currently, individual diagnostic features do not appear sufficiently discriminatory. The combined use of several features may however be useful. METHODS: OCT is based on infrared light, photonics and fibre optics. The system used has an axial resolution of 10 mum, lateral 20 mum. We investigated the combined use of several OCT features from basal cell carcinomas (BCC) and actinic keratosis (AK). We studied BCC (41) and AK (37) lesions
