Spatial Resolution Requirements for Traffic-Related Air Pollutant Exposure Evaluations.

Vehicle emissions represent one of the most important air pollution sources in most urban areas, and elevated concentrations of pollutants found near major roads have been associated with many adverse health impacts. To understand these impacts, exposure estimates should reflect the spatial and temporal patterns observed for traffic-related air pollutants. This paper evaluates the spatial resolution and zonal systems required to estimate accurately intraurban and near-road exposures of traffic-related air pollutants. The analyses use the detailed information assembled for a large (800 km2) are

A pilot study using scripted ventilation conditions to identify key factors affecting indoor pollutant concentration and air exchange rate in a residence.

A pilot study was conducted using an occupied, single-family test house in Columbus, OH, to determine whether a script-based protocol could be used to obtain data useful in identifying the key factors affecting air-exchange rate (AER) and the relationship between indoor and outdoor concentrations of selected traffic-related air pollutants. The test script called for hourly changes to elements of the test house considered likely to influence air flow and AER, including the position (open or closed) of each window and door and the operation (on/off) of the furnace, air conditioner, and ceiling f

Rural livelihood vulnerability to climate variability: a district-level assessment in Ethiopia.

Climate variability poses significant risks to Ethiopia's rainfall-dependent smallholder farming systems. Since meteorological patterns can vary widely across agro-ecological zones, understanding differences in vulnerability across these zones is essential for targeted adaptation. However, many existing vulnerability studies rely on basin-, zonal-, or inter-district analyses and apply composite indices without robustness testing, which can obscure within-district heterogeneity and limit policy relevance at the scale where adaptation decisions are implemented. This study assesses smallholder fa

Impact of greenhouse gases and air pollutants on the incidence and mortality of HBV and HCV in China.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have found that meteorological conditions are associated with an increased risk of viral hepatitis. However, other environmental factors, such as greenhouse gases and air pollutants, that may influence this risk have not yet been identified. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The epidemiological characteristics of major viral hepatitis, including hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV), in China were investigated. Quantile-based g-computation (Qgcomp) and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were then applied sequentially to explore the single and mixed effec

Exploring Climate and Air Pollution Mitigating Benefits of Urban Parks in Sao Paulo Through a Pollution Sensor Network.

Ambient air pollution is the most important environmental factor impacting human health. Urban landscapes present unique air quality challenges, which are compounded by climate change adaptation challenges, as air pollutants can also be affected by the urban heat island effect, amplifying the deleterious effects on health. Nature-based solutions have shown potential for alleviating environmental stressors, including air pollution and heat wave abatement. However, such solutions must be designed in order to maximize mitigation and not inadvertently increase pollutant exposure. This study aims t

Lung cancer clusters and air pollution exposure in Wayne County, Michigan: an autoregressive distributed lag model.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is the most common cancer killer in the world. Although smoking is the biggest risk factor, it is increasingly being discovered that environmental pollution is also associated with the development of lung cancer. Previous studies have discovered the impact of environmental pollution on lung cancer, but it has been difficult to determine the duration of time after exposure in which the risk is greatest. Our goals were to investigate the association of specific air pollutants with lung cancer and to determine the lag time at which the incidence peaks following exposure.

Influence of urbanization on schistosomiasis infection risk in Anhui Province based on sixteen year's longitudinal surveillance data: a spatio-temporal modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Urbanization greatly affects the natural and social environment of human existence and may have a multifactoral impact on parasitic diseases. Schistosomiasis, a common parasitic disease transmitted by the snail Oncomelania hupensis, is mainly found in areas with population aggregations along rivers and lakes where snails live. Previous studies have suggested that factors related to urbanization may influence the infection risk of schistosomiasis, but this association remains unclear. This study aimed to analyse the effect of urbanization on schistosomiasis infection risk from a spa
