Despite growing awareness on hand eczema (HE) in Western countries, public attention to HE in China is limited. We aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of HE and examine its association with atopic dermatitis in the Chinese population. A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted across 23 tertiary hospitals in China between September 2018 and November 2019. Patients with HE completed a survey covering demographics, allergic diseases, and HE-specific characteristics and underwent patch testing. Clinical severity was assessed using the Hand Eczema Severity Index. Binary logist

BACKGROUND: Hand eczema (HE) is a multifactorial disease, comprising different aetiological conditions and different morphologies. There are two aetiologically distinct groups of HE recognised: exogenous, such as contact dermatitis (allergic and/or irritant HE) and endogenous, such as the classic hyperkeratotic HE. Differences in the skin barrier properties of these two conditions could theoretically be expected.
AIM: To examine whether differences exist in the lipid profile and the susceptibility of the stratum corneum (SC) in patients with allergic/irritant HE and those with hyperkeratotic

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) has been shown to be useful in both spot and field treatments of actinic keratoses (AK). This study evaluates the safety and efficacy of pretreatment of AK lesions on the dorsal hands and forearms with tazarotene gel (0.1%) twice a day for one week before broad-area ALA PDT.
METHODS: Ten subjects aged 75.4 ± 11.6 years (mean plus minus SD) with at least four AK lesions on their dorsal forearm or hand were randomized so that one dorsal hand or forearm was pretreated with tazarotene gel (0.1%) twice daily for one

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to collect data on the prevalence of hand eczema and relevant risk factors in geriatric nurses in Germany.
METHODS: 1375 geriatric nurses from 86 nursing homes were investigated by 41 occupational physicians.
RESULTS: Hand eczema was diagnosed in 243 nurses, corresponding to a point prevalence of 18% [95% confidence interval (CI) 16-20%]. In most cases (71%), the skin changes were only mild. Two thirds of the geriatric nurses who reported skin changes stated that they had developed hand eczema after starting this profession

Hairdressers are one of the largest groups affected by occupational contact dermatitis. In this population-based study, 193 trainee hairdressers and 184 practising hairdressers each completed a questionnaire and had their hands examined. Participants were asked about past or present atopy including eczema, asthma or hayfever, which occurred in 59.2%, and were individually correlated with a history of occupational skin problems. Almost 60% of hairdressers and trainees had experienced changes on their hands since commencing hairdressing, while 29% had evidence of abnormal skin on examination on

Hand eczema is a common skin disease. Because of its variable etiologies and clinical manifestations, it is difficult to determine the etiology from the clinical manifestation. Among the contact allergens, nickel is the most common. Patients with hand eczema and a nickel allergy have a poorer prognosis than patients without a nickel allergy. The reason is still uncertain; suggestions include persistent exposure to nickel or a weak skin barrier. The purpose of our study was to identify the characteristic clinical manifestations by etiology and to compare the skin barrier state between patients

We report a case of arsenic keratosis and pigmentation accompained by multiple Bowen's disease and genitourinary cancer in a 64-year-old man. He was a psoriasis patient with a history of herbal medication for about thirty years. He showed multiple hyperkeratotic plaques on the bilateral palms, soles, and multiple, brownish, scaly, elevated papules on the back in addition to diffuse hyperpigmentation. Biopsy confirmed arsenic keratosis and Bowen's disease. Transitional cell carcinoma was also detected on his ureter and bladder during follow-up. The skin lesions were treated with topical 5-fluor

BACKGROUND: Irritant and/or allergic hand dermatitis in individuals who are unable to avoid causative exposures is difficult to control. Usefulness of protective creams has been generally unsatisfactory.
OBJECTIVE: To determine if hand dermatitis, primarily of an occupational nature, could be improved by the use of a protective foam containing dimethicone and glycerin.
METHODS: Adult male and female subjects with chronic hand dermatitis for at least 12 months, felt to be either allergic, irritant, or combined in nature were given the study foam for routine application after a 2-week observat

BACKGROUND: No biomarkers have been identified that can classify subtypes of hand eczema (HE). Although skin biopsies represent the gold standard for investigations of the skin, the invasive technique is not favorable when investigating skin from sensitive areas. Recent advances in the use of skin-tape strips for molecular investigations enable noninvasive investigations of HE.
OBJECTIVE: By using whole transcriptome sequencing (WTS), the molecular profile of HE according to different localizations on the hands, etiologies, and clinical/morphological subtypes was investigated.
METHODS: Thirt

BACKGROUND: Most of the data concerning the prevalence of actinic keratosis (AK) originate from the USA and Australia, and recently from Austria and Spain, but are based on populations in dermatology practices. Switzerland is the leading country with skin cancer incidence in Europe. AK prevalence among the Swiss population is therefore an important public health issue.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of AK in the outpatient Swiss population in general practice.
METHODS: General practitioners captured AK diagnosis stage and localization in consecutive patients, who attended the physician

Metalworking fluids (MWF) have been reported as being an important cause of irritant contact dermatitis in metal workers. Our purpose was to determine whether the irritancy of different MWF assessed by 2 different types of predictive human in vivo tests could be compared with epidemiological data. 3 water-based MWF were tested in the same panel of subjects. Reactions were assessed by a visual score (VS), evaporimetry to evaluate the transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and chromametry to quantify erythema. Test 1: MWF were applied with Finn Chambers on the volunteers' mid-back, removed after 1 day

BACKGROUND: Because patients with atopic dermatitis are less prone to type IV allergies, there has been controversy regarding the role of patch testing in these patients.
OBJECTIVE: The present study was conducted to evaluate the role of patch testing in atopic individuals.
METHODS: One-hundred patients with hand eczema were patch tested using the standard patch test battery (HERMAL, Kurt Herrmann, Reinbek, West Germany) and the Finn chamber units. The total immunoglobulin class E (IgE) level was determined and correlated to the results of patch testing.
RESULTS: Eighty-seven patients had p

Pseudo-Kaposi's sarcoma or acroangiodermatitis usually has underlying conditions of increased venous pressure or circulatory abnormality. We experienced two cases of pseudo-Kaposi's sarcoma in patients with acquired iatrogenic arteriovenous fistula from hemodialysis on their forearms. The patients complained of painful swollen crusted vesicles and purple or erythematous patches or plaques on their hands and fingers. Histologic findings included features of pseudo-Kaposi's sarcoma such as proliferations of small vascular spaces with narrow vascular channels lined by spindle cells, extravasated

BACKGROUND: Chronic hand eczema (CHE) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects the hands and wrists causing itching, dryness, cracking, and pain. It often affects people with atopic dermatitis (AD) and can interfere with work and daily life. Topical therapies may have limited utility from ineffectiveness, poor adherence, or poor tolerability. Here, we evaluate oral upadacitinib (UPA) as a potential therapeutic alternative for patients with AD and refractory CHE.
METHODS: This narrative review analyzed studies from PubMed, SCOPUS, and EMBASE evaluating CHE treatments. Eligible stu
