Real life management of community-acquired Pneumonia in adults in the Gulf region and comparison with practice guidelines: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Very few data exist on the management of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in patients admitted to hospitals in the Gulf region. The objectives of this study were to describe treatment patterns for CAP in 38 hospitals in five Gulf countries (United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, and Qatar) and to compare the findings to the most recent Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA)/American Thoracic Society (ATS) guidelines. METHODS: This was a prospective, observational study conducted between January 2009 and February 2011. Adult patients hospitalised (excluding intensive

Management of accidental exposure to HIV: the COREVIH 2011 activity report.

BACKGROUND: Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) relies on procedures allowing quick access to treatment in case of accidental exposure to viral risk (AEV). Occupational blood exposure (OBE) affects mainly caregivers; these accidents are monitored and assessed by the inter-regional center for nosocomial infections (C-CLIN), occupational physicians, and infection control units. They are classified apart from sexual exposure for which there is currently no monitoring. METHODS: Data was extracted from the COREVIH (steering committee for the prevention of HIV infection) 2011 activity reports (AR), ava

Treatment response of bipolar and unipolar alcoholics to an inpatient dual diagnosis program.

BACKGROUND: Depressed and bipolar alcoholics represent a significant affective subgroup that has a poorer prognosis than either diagnosis alone. To date few systematic treatment programs have been developed to treat dual diagnosis. METHODS: An inpatient treatment program was developed at St Patrick's Hospital Dublin to treat dual diagnosis clients with alcohol dependence and either unipolar or bipolar affective disorder. Clients (N=232) were assessed for depression, anxiety, elation, cravings, drink and drug intake on admission, discharge, 3 and 6 months post-discharge from the program. RESU

Development and initial demonstration of a community-based intervention for homeless, cocaine-using, African-American Women.

Drug abstinence is difficult to achieve and maintain, especially when clients return to their pretreatment environment. Forging ties with the natural helping networks in the community, such as religious organizations, may reinforce abstinent behaviors established during treatment. This study evaluated Bridges to the Community, a supplemental component to an intensive residential treatment program. Bridges uses members of African-American churches as mentors for recovering women. This demonstration project included 118 female participants with primary cocaine dependence who received either stan

Prescribing Performance Post-Acute Coronary Syndrome Using a Composite Medication Indicator: ANZACS-QI 24.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines previously recommended use of dual antiplatelet therapy, statins, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ACEI/ARB) and beta blockers (five classes of drugs) in patients without contraindications or intolerance after acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, recent guidelines have taken a more nuanced view regarding the use of ACEI/ARB and beta blockers. Our aim was to develop a composite post-discharge medication indicator, based on available evidence, to support quality improvement. METHODS: 4,112 consecutive post-ACS patients who unde
