How do we sleep while our beds are burning? High ambient temperatures are associated with substantial sleep loss.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: High ambient temperatures are associated with negative health outcomes, including heat stress, injuries and accidents, and poor mental health. Sleep loss may contribute to these adverse impacts. However, robust supporting evidence is lacking. METHODS: Data from a global sample of sleep tracker users (N = 317 758; Withings Sleep Analyzer [WSA]: n = 116 879; Withings ScanWatch: n = 200 879) between January 2020 and September 2023 (~165 million nights) were analyzed. Ambient temperatures (24 hour average) were extracted from a climate model for each nightly observation based on

Malaria burden and associated risk factors among malaria suspected patients attending health facilities in Kaffa zone, Southwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia has been progressing very well in controlling malaria in the past few years. However, shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic, an unpredictable malaria resurgence was observed in almost all malaria-endemic areas of the country, although the exact cause of which has not yet been identified. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate malaria burden and associated risk factors in one of the endemic zones of Ethiopia. METHODS: A health facility-based retrospective and cross-sectional study design was conducted in the Kaffa zone, southwest of Ethiopia. Hence, a seven-year retrospe

Artificial Intelligence Approach for Severe Dengue Early Warning System.

Dengue fever is a viral infectious disease transmitted through mosquito bites, and has symptoms ranging from mild flu-like symptoms to deadly complications. Dengue fever is one of the global burden diseases which annually have 50-100 million cases with 500,000 cases of severe dengue fever, of which 22,000 deaths occur mostly in children. Despite the discovery of vaccines, vector control is still the main approach for prevention efforts. Early detection and accessibility to medical care can reduce severe Dengue mortality rate from 50% to 2%. In the previous study, both statistical and machine l

The associations of daylight and melatonin receptor 1B gene rs10830963 variant with glycemic traits: the prospective PPP-Botnia study.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal variation in glucose metabolism might be driven by changes in daylight. Melatonin entrains circadian regulation and is directly associated with daylight. The relationship between melatonin receptor 1B gene variants with glycemic traits and type 2 diabetes is well established. We studied if daylight length was associated with glycemic traits and if it modified the relationship between melatonin receptor 1B gene rs10830963 variant and glycemic traits. MATERIALS: A population-based sample of 3422 18-78-year-old individuals without diabetes underwent an oral glucose tolerance

Short-term association between ambient air pollution and lung cancer mortality.

RATIONALE: Long-term exposure to air pollution has been associated with increased lung cancer incidence and mortality. However, the short-term association between air pollution and lung cancer mortality (LCM) remains largely unknown. METHODS: We collected daily data on particulate matter with diameter <2.5 μm (PM2.5), particulate matter with diameter < 10 μm (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone (O3), and LCM in three of the biggest cities in China, i.e. Beijing, Chongqing, and Guangzhou, from 2013 to 2015. We first estimated city-specific relationships between air pollutants and LCM using

Assessing the impact of anthropogenic pollution on isoprene-derived secondary organic aerosol formation in PM2.5 collected from the Birmingham, Alabama, ground site during the 2013 Southern Oxidant and Aerosol Study.

In the southeastern US, substantial emissions of isoprene from deciduous trees undergo atmospheric oxidation to form secondary organic aerosol (SOA) that contributes to fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Laboratory studies have revealed that anthropogenic pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide (SO2), oxides of nitrogen (NO x ), and aerosol acidity, can enhance SOA formation from the hydroxyl radical (OH)-initiated oxidation of isoprene; however, the mechanisms by which specific pollutants enhance isoprene SOA in ambient PM2.5 remain unclear. As one aspect of an investigation to examine how anthropog

Evacuation planning for plausible worst case inundation scenarios in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Honolulu is susceptible to coastal flooding hazards. Like other coastal cities, Honolulu&s long-term economic viability and sustainability depends on how well it can adapt to changes in the natural and built environment. While there is a disagreement over the magnitude and extent of localized impacts associated with climate change, it is widely accepted that by 2100 there will be at least a meter in sea level rise (SLR) and an increase in extreme weather events. Increased exposure and vulnerabilities associated with urbanization and location of human activities in coastal areas warrants seriou

Typhoid Fever and its association with environmental factors in the Dhaka Metropolitan Area of Bangladesh: a spatial and time-series approach.

Typhoid fever is a major cause of death worldwide with a major part of the disease burden in developing regions such as the Indian sub-continent. Bangladesh is part of this highly endemic region, yet little is known about the spatial and temporal distribution of the disease at a regional scale. This research used a Geographic Information System to explore, spatially and temporally, the prevalence of typhoid in Dhaka Metropolitan Area (DMA) of Bangladesh over the period 2005-9. This paper provides the first study of the spatio-temporal epidemiology of typhoid for this region. The aims of the st

Availability of vitamin D photoconversion weighted UV radiation in southern South America.

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) plays a key role in several biological functions, including human health. Skin exposure to UVR is the main factor in vitamin D photoconversion. There is also evidence relating low levels of vitamin D with certain internal cancers, mainly colon, breast and prostate, as well as other diseases. Several epidemiological studies have shown an inverse relationship between the above-mentioned diseases and latitude, in accordance with the ultraviolet radiation latitudinal gradient. The aim of this study is to determine whether UV irradiance levels in the southern South Ameri

An integrated climate-structured personal and ambient air pollution monitoring framework embedded within a pregnancy and postpartum cohort in Sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa, climatic variability intersects with structural inequities-biomass reliance, informal livelihoods, rapid urbanisation, and sparse regulatory monitoring-to generate highly heterogeneous air pollution exposures during pregnancy. Maternal exposure assessment in the region remains dominated by coarse ambient estimates, limiting understanding of how climate and microenvironment jointly shape actual personal exposure through their influence on pollutant generation, dispersion, and proximity to emission sources. OBJECTIVE: To develop and implement an adaptable, cli

Association between ambient temperature and thrombosis-related signaling lipids: Implications for early cardiovascular risk.

BACKGROUND: Nonoptimal temperatures significantly contribute to cardiovascular mortality, a burden expected to increase with climate change. Sensitive biomarkers for early cardiovascular risks remain scarce. OBJECTIVE: We examined how thrombosis-related signaling lipids respond to ambient temperature, analyzing dose-response and lag patterns over a 30-day period, and assessed whether lipid changes mediate the association between temperature and thrombosis biomarkers using mediation analyses. METHODS: We conducted a prospective panel study of 112 participants (aged 42-80) in Beijing (2016-201

Genetic analysis of fertility and heat tolerance in Iberian sows.

Heat stress is an important environmental challenge for pig production, with negative effects on reproductive performance. This study evaluated the impact of heat stress on farrowing rate (FR) and weaning-to-insemination interval (WII) in Iberian sows, estimated their genetic parameters, and assessed their relationship with heat tolerance (HT), defined as the individual rate of fertility decline under heat stress. Data from a closed commercial Iberian pig population were analysed, including 2 388 sows having 9 583 WII records, and 3 009 sows having 13 290 first insemination records collected b

Productive adaptability of Karan Fries cattle evolved under subtropical environmental conditions in changing climatic scenario.

Climate change poses significant challenges to dairy cattle production systems, with heat stress causing substantial economic losses through reduced milk yield. Understanding the relationship between heat stress and milk production is crucial for developing adaptive strategies in tropical and sub-tropical dairy farming. This retrospective longitudinal study aimed to model lactation curves, develop resilience indicator traits, and quantify heat stress-induced milk losses in Karan Fries cattle under tropical conditions. Daily milk yield records (n = 417,642) from 1475 Karan Fries cows collected

Short-term lagged exposure to ambient air pollutants and hospitalization costs among AMI patients: health-economic evidence from a low-pollution Chinese city with DRG/DIP standardized medical payment.

BACKGROUND: Ambient air pollution poses substantial cardiovascular health and economic burdens worldwide, yet existing evidence largely focuses on high-pollution regions and clinical endpoints such as incidence or mortality. Few studies have quantified air pollution-attributable hospitalization costs for acute myocardial infarction (AMI), especially under low air quality conditions. Combined with China's Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRG) / Diagnosis-Intervention Packet (DIP) case-mix medical payment reform, hospitalization expenses can serve as a reliable proxy reflecting AMI disease severity and

Occupational heat stress among female agricultural workers in the Jordan Valley, Palestine.

INTRODUCTION: Heat stress and extreme weather events are increasingly recognized as significant consequences of climate change, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations, whose exposure and adaptive capacity are shaped by social, political, and economic conditions. In the context of occupational health, workers engaged in outdoor labor are among the most exposed groups, with agricultural workers facing particularly high risks due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures and extreme weather conditions. In politically constrained and resource-limited settings such as the Jordan Valle

Heat stress on oocyte collection day has a greater impact on the conception rate than on embryo transfer day in bovine OPU-IVF programs.

The objective of this study was to determine whether thermal conditions on the oocyte collection day or on the embryo transfer day have the greater impact on conception outcomes in bovine OPU-IVF programs under controlled field conditions. Heat stress impairs reproductive performance in cattle, but the relative contribution of these two exposure windows remains poorly defined. We retrospectively analyzed 700 embryo transfer records from a single Japanese farm using F1 nulliparous heifers and frozen-thawed in vitro-produced blastocysts derived from Japanese Black donors via ovum pick-up. Association between psychosocial factors and adverse effects of light-to-moderate ambient heat in patients with chronic diseases: results of the prospective cohort study CLIMATE-II.

BACKGROUND: Global temperatures are increasing. Adaptation of health behavior could mitigate adverse effects of heat, but health benefits are probably limited and depend on the context. Therefore, other strategies are also needed. Our study aimed to identify adverse effects of light heat (> 27-32 °C) and moderate heat (> 32-40 °C) and to analyze whether psychosocial factors were associated with these effects. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study based on an access-restricted online survey and publicly available weather data. A total of 1810 individuals were contacted by 64 GP prac
