BACKGROUND: Pituitary tumors and/or their treatment are associated with multiple pituitary hormone deficiency (MPHD) in adults, but the distinct pituitary hormone profile of MPHD in Chinese children and adolescents remains unclear.
METHODS: Patients with MPHD were divided into four groups according to their MRI results: 1) pituitary stalk interruption syndrome (PSIS); 2) hypoplasia; 3) normal; and 4) tumor survivor.
RESULTS: Among the 184 patients, 93 patients (50.5%) were with PSIS, 24 (13.0%) had hypoplastic pituitary gland, 10 (5.4%) patients were normal, and 57 (31.0%) were tumor survivo

The calyx of Held, a large glutamatergic presynaptic terminal in the auditory brainstem undergoes developmental changes to support the high action-potential firing rates required for auditory information encoding. In addition, calyx terminals are morphologically diverse, which impacts vesicle release properties and synaptic plasticity. Mitochondria influence synaptic plasticity through calcium buffering and are crucial for providing the energy required for synaptic transmission. Therefore, it has been postulated that mitochondrial levels increase during development and contribute to the morpho

Erdheim-Chester disease is a very rare histiocytic disease. It represents one form of juvenile xanthogranuloma in WHO classification of blood diseases. The disease often causes B symptoms, skeletal pain and also may cause diabetes insipidus and retroperitoneal fibrosis. Selection of therapy depends on published case reports and small clinical trials. There are no recommendations for treatment based on randomized studies. Interferon α is probably the most commonly used drug for this disease. Some remissions have been described after treatment. However, long-term interferon α application is need

In order to investigate the relationship between pituitary appearance and the diagnosis of growth hormone deficiency (GHD), we have assessed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and GH status during provocation tests in 110 patients (78 males; median age 9.8, range 0.1-20 yr), evaluated for possible GH disorders. On the basis of pituitary function tests, patients were divided into GH deficient (GH peak < 15 mIU/l [5.8 ng/ml]) (n = 82) or GH sufficient (GH peak > 15 mIU/l) (n = 28). The former were further divided into those with multiple hormone deficits (MPHD) (n = 19) or isolated GHD - sev

Growth hormone-releasing peptides (GHRPs) are a series of hepta (GHRP-1)- and hexapeptides (GHRP-2, GHRP-6, Hexarelin) that have been shown to be effective releasers of GH in animals and humans. More recently, a series of nonpeptidyl GH secretagogues (L-692,429, L-692,585, MK-0677) were discovered using GHRP-6 as a template. Some cyclic peptides as well as penta-, tetra-, and pseudotripeptides have also been described. This review summarizes recent developments in our understanding of the GHRPs, as well as the current nonpeptide pharmacologic analogs. GHRPs and their analogs have no structural

An i.v. injection of 8-40 mg (kg cationized and heat-aggregated rabbit or human Ig (cat-aggr RIg,-HuIg; pI 9.5) elicited a strong diffuse linear fixation in rat glomerular capillaries revealed by one-step immunofluorescence or immunoenzyme histochemistry 1 and 2 h post-injection. Preferential binding to the lamina rara externa (LRE) was documented in ultrastructure by preembedding and postembedding assays (HRP-coupled antibody and protein A-colloidal gold, respectively). After 24 and 48 h the glomeruli were negative. Polyethylenimine (PEI)-reactive polyanion of LRE was significantly reduced 1

The early development of the retinofugal pathway of mice has been studied by light and electron microscopic methods in order to define the spatial distribution and the structure of the growth cones as they advance from the eye to the brain. We have studied the relationships of the growth cones to each other, to the glia and, in the older individuals, to the nerve fibers that are already terminating in the brain. We have looked at the rate of advance of the growth cones and have paid particular attention to the changing relationships of the growth cones as they approach the optic chiasm. We hav

Golgi studies in newborn kittens show that the two most prevalent interneurons in Rexed's lamina II of the dorsal horn of the medulla, the stalked cell and islet cell (Gobel, '75a,b, '78b) form their dendritic arbors in a similar fashion. At birth, both cell types are present in forms ranging from immature, in which numerous short dendrites radiate from the cell body in all directions, to relatively mature in which their dendritic arbors have elongated in specific directions and the adult branching pattern is already evident. During postnatal maturation, many dendrites are lost while only a fe

With the indirect immunofluorescence technique somatostatin, a recently isolated and structurally characterized hypothalamic tetradecapeptide, which inhibits growth hormone release, has been traced in different tissues of the rat. Somatostatin or somatostatin-like immunoreactivity (SLI) was present in both neurons and endocrine-like cells. Somatostatin positive nerve cell bodies were observed in the periventricular region in the anterior parts of the hypothalamus and in probable nerve endings in the external and internal layer of the median eminence and in the pituitary stalk and in the ventro

Recurrent ischemic events may occur in patients with mild-to-moderate intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis despite standardized medication; stenosis rate alone is insufficient for risk stratification, and plaque activity imaging markers are needed. Because plaque enhancement may reflect plaque activity beyond luminal narrowing, we hypothesized that higher enhancement grade would predict recurrent ischemic events of stenosis rate. This study evaluated the association between high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI) plaque enhancement grading and recurrent ischemic events and examine

H9N2 low-pathogenic avian influenza viruses (LPAIV) represent an ongoing zoonotic threat due to their enzootic circulation in poultry, reassortment capacity, and increasing human transmission events. This study characterized three H9N2 isolates recovered from apparently healthy poultry in a Changchun live poultry market (September-November 2022) that exhibited unprecedented genetic and phenotypic characteristics indicating enhanced zoonotic risk. Phylogenetic analysis showed a complex mosaic genome combining segments from four distinct lineages: HA from the BJ/94-like lineage (human-associated

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although diabetes mellitus (DM) is a consistently documented risk factor for the plaque vulnerability, the effect of diabetes mellitus and glycemic control on the characteristics of intracranial plaques and stroke mechanism has yet to be explored. This study aimed to explore whether prestroke glycemic control is linked to plaque instability and could result in varying types and mechanisms of stroke.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively included 107 patients with infarction attributed to atherosclerotic stenosis of the M1 segment of the MCA within 4 weeks of sympto

BACKGROUND: Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), a zoonotic agent in the Nairoviridae family (genus Orthonairovirus), is a high-priority pathogen. CCHFV infection causes Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), a human disease with case fatality rates of up to 40%. Serological surveillance of CCHFV in animals and humans is crucial for ecological studies and public health.
METHODS: We developed CCHFV mix-and-read assays utilizing split-NanoLuc technology (NanoBiT) to detect anti-CCHFV antibodies against the nucleoprotein (NP) stalk region and the GP38 glycoprotein. These species- and

BACKGROUND: Cat eye syndrome (CES) is a rare chromosomal disease, with estimated incidence of about 1 in 100,000 live newborns. The classic triad of iris coloboma, anorectal malformations, and auricular abnormalities is present in 40% of patients, and other congenital defects may also be observed. The typical associated cytogenetic anomaly relies on an extra chromosome, derived from an inverted duplication of short arm and proximal long arm of chromosome 22, resulting in partial trisomy or tetrasomy of such regions (inv dup 22pter-22q11.2).
CASE PRESENTATION: We report on a full-term newborn,
