Three-dimensional stress distribution in the human periodontal ligament in masticatory, parafunctional, and trauma loads: finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: The presence of the periodontal ligament (PDL) makes it possible to absorb and distribute loads produced during masticatory function and other tooth contacts into the alveolar process via the alveolar bone proper. However, several factors affect the integrity of periodontal structures causing the destruction of the connective matrix and cells, the loss of fibrous attachment, and the resorption of alveolar bone. METHODS: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stress distribution by finite element analysis in a PDL in three-dimensional models of the upper central incisor unde

Long-term follow-up of early treatment of unilateral forced posterior cross-bite. Orofacial status.

Twenty-nine subjects, 20 years old on average and all treated at 4 years of age for unilateral forced posterior dento-alveolar cross-bite by grinding or by expansion of the upper dental arch, were clinically examined to evaluate the long-term effects of their treatment. The frequency of successful treatment-indicated as stable correction of the cross-bite-by means of only 1 treatment sequence was 59%; by grinding, 57%; and by expansion, 60%. The 18 subjects that had only been treated at the age of 4 years formed the 'early group' in our study. Eleven of our subjects had been retreated later in

Dilemmas in Treatment of Recurrent Recalcitrant Dental Anterior Open Bite.

An anterior open bite is one of the most difficult occlusal abnormalities to treat. Quite often this aberration entails dental component and/or skeletal component. The skeletal open bite will require intrusion of the posterior sextants with the assistance of bite blocks, temporary anchorage devices, high pull headgear, and as a last resort - orthognathic surgery. The orthodontic treatment should be augmented with the orofacial myofunctional therapy. In this article, the author describes 3 different variations of treatment of the dental anterior open bite, first on acrylic models, and then on t

Periodontal Disease Is Associated with Insomnia among Victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake: A Panel Study Initiated Three Months after the Disaster.

In March 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE), which was followed by a devastating tsunami, destroyed the societal and the public hygiene systems in Japanese coastal areas. Insomnia, the greatest issue among disaster victims, has detrimental effects on both physical and psychological health. Periodontitis causes chronic discomfort and inflammation, and little is known about its impact on insomnia. Three months after the earthquake, a health panel survey was conducted over four surveys, till September 2013, in which information regarding 8,015 adults was collected and used. In addition

Oral processing effort, appetite and acute energy intake in lean and obese adults.

Chewing reportedly contributes to satiation and satiety signals. Attempts to document and quantify this have led to small and inconsistent effects. The present trial manipulated oral processing effort though required chewing of gums of different hardness and measured appetitive sensations, energy intake, gastric emptying, GI transit time, and concentrations of glucose, insulin, GLP-1, ghrelin and pancreatic polypeptide. Sixty adults classified by sex and BMI (15 each of lean females, obese females, lean males and obese males) were tested in a randomized, controlled, cross-over trial with three

The effects of chewing-side preference on human brain activity during tooth clenching: an fMRI study.

Chewing-side preference (CSP) may be associated with dominant cerebral hemispheric organisation. However, little information exists regarding whether CSP is reflected by preferential activity in the opposite (to the CSP) cerebral hemisphere. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of CSP on cerebral cortex response to bilateral tooth clenching. Sixteen right-handed participants with left (two men: 29·0±8·4 years old, six women: 32·3±4·8 years old) or right (four men: 31·0±6·1 years old, four women: 30·8±4·7 years old) CSP were scanned by functional magnetic resonance imaging durin

Effect of tooth loss on spatial memory and trkB-mRNA levels in rats.

The mechanism by which tooth loss accelerates spatial memory impairment is unknown. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that tooth loss affects trkB-mRNA levels and leads to an accelerated decrease in the hippocampal cell density in rats. A radial maze was used to evaluate the spatial memory of male Wistar rats that were categorized based on the number of extracted molar teeth. Number of hippocampal pyramidal cells and the trkB-mRNA expressions in the amygdala, perirhinal cortex, thalamus, and the hippocampal CA1, CA3, and CA4 areas, were evaluated using molecular biological t

Histamine H3 receptor agonist- and antagonist-evoked vacuous chewing movements in 6-OHDA-lesioned rats occurs in an absence of change in microdialysate dopamine levels.

In rats lesioned neonatally with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA), repeated treatment with SKF 38393 (1-phenyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-(1H)-3-benzazepine-7,8-diol), a dopamine D(1)/D(5) receptor agonist, produces robust stereotyped and locomotor activities. The gradual induction of dopamine D(1) receptor supersensitivity is known as a priming phenomenon, and this process is thought to underlie not only the appearance of vacuous chewing movements in humans with tardive dyskinesia, but also the onset of motor dyskinesias in L-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA)-treated Parkinson's disease patients. Short- and long-term efficacy of brief cognitive-behavioral therapy for patients with chronic temporomandibular disorder pain: a randomized, controlled trial.

We evaluated the short- and long-term efficacy of a brief cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for chronic temporomandibular disorder (TMD) pain in a randomized controlled trial. TMD clinic patients were assigned randomly to four sessions of either CBT (n=79) or an education/attention control condition (n=79). Participants completed outcome (pain, activity interference, jaw function, and depression) and process (pain beliefs, catastrophizing, and coping) measures before randomization, and 3 (post-treatment), 6, and 12 months later. As compared with the control group, the CBT group showed signifi

Memantine attenuates the increase in striatal preproenkephalin mRNA expression and development of haloperidol-induced persistent oral dyskinesias in rats.

Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a serious motor side effect of long-term neuroleptic treatment that may persist after drug withdrawal. Alterations in striatal enkephalinergic neurons due to excessive glutamatergic activity is a possible pathogenetic mechanism. We studied the effect of the NMDA antagonist memantine in a rat model of TD, in which vacuous chewing movements (VCM) were induced by 20 weeks of haloperidol administration. The striatal density of preproenkephalin mRNA was measured and the number of neurons estimated. Haloperidol induced persistent VCM that was associated with increased stri
