Aims: To compare the effects of intrathecal anaesthesia using procaine and xylazine, with and without sedation with I/V xylazine and butorphanol, on sedation and cardiorespiratory measures in calves undergoing umbilical surgery. Methods: Male dairy calves, aged <3 months, were recruited that had enlargement of the umbilical stalk which was abnormal when palpated. They were assigned to receive either intrathecal injection between the sixth lumbar and first sacral vertebrae of 4 mg/kg of 2% procaine and 0.2 mg/kg 2% xylazine, with I/V injection of 0.02 mg/kg xylazine and 0.1 mg/kg of butorphanol

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) persistence in infected individuals relies on a plethora of mechanisms to efficiently reduce host immune responses. To that end, HCMV uses a variety of gene products, some of which have not been identified yet. Here we characterized the UL8 gene, which consists of two exons, sharing the first with the HCMV RL11 family member UL7 UL8 is a transmembrane protein with an N-terminal immunoglobulin (Ig)-like domain in common with UL7 but with an extended stalk and a distinctive cytoplasmic tail. The UL8 open reading frame gives rise to a heavily glycosylated protein pred

BACKGROUND: Myzostomids are marine annelids, nearly all of which live symbiotically on or inside echinoderms, chiefly crinoids, and to a lesser extent asteroids and ophiuroids. These symbionts possess a variety of adult body plans and lifestyles. Most described species live freely on the exterior of their hosts as adults (though starting life on the host inside cysts), while other taxa permanently reside in galls, cysts, or within the host's mouth, digestive system, coelom, or gonads. Myzostomid lifestyles range from stealing incoming food from the host's food grooves to consuming the host's t

OBJECT: Accurate diagnosis of the topographical relationships of craniopharyngiomas (CPs) involving the third ventricle and/or hypothalamus remains a challenging issue that critically influences the prediction of risks associated with their radical surgical removal. This study evaluates the diagnostic accuracy of MRI to define the precise topographical relationships between intraventricular CPs, the third ventricle, and the hypothalamus.
METHODS: An extensive retrospective review of well-described CPs reported in the MRI era between 1990 and 2009 yielded 875 lesions largely or wholly involvin

Ancient duplications and rearrangements of protein-coding segments have resulted in complex gene family relationships. As a result, gene products may acquire new specificities, altered recognition properties, modified functions, and even loss of functionality. The natural cytotoxicity receptor (NCR) family are natural killer (NK)-activating receptors whose members are NKp46 (NCR1), NKp44 (NCR2), and NKp30 (NCR3). The NCR proteins are putative immunoglobulin superfamily members whose ligands are unknown. The NKp46 gene is present and expressed in human and mouse, NKp44 is only present and expre

Experiments were carried out on the second somatic sensory area (SII) of cats to study 1) the laminar distribution of axon terminals from the ipsilateral first somatic sensory cortex (SI); and 2) the topographical relations between their terminal field and the callosal neurons projecting to the contralateral homotopic cortex. To label simultaneously in SII both ipsilateral cortical afferents and callosal cells, cats were given iontophoretic injections of Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin (PHA-L) in the forepaw zone of ipsilateral SI, and pressure injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in

The embryonal and fetal development of the human eye includes a series of sequential events starting with the fertilization of the ovum and culminating in the birth of a normal baby. Three main periods can be distinguished in the prenatal development of the eye. The first period called embryogenesis is characterized by the establishment of the primary organ rudiments and ends at the end of the 3rd week with the appearance of the optic sulci on both sides of the midline at the expanded cranial end of the still open neural folds. The second period called organogenesis includes the development of

The distribution of neuropeptide Y (NPY) in the central nervous system of the frog Rana ridibunda was determined by immunofluorescence using a highly specific antiserum. NPY-like containing perikarya were localized in the infundibulum, mainly in the ventral and dorsal nuclei of the infundibulum, in the preoptic nucleus, in the posterocentral nucleus of the thalamus, in the anteroventral nucleus of the mesencephalic tegmentum, in the part posterior to the torus semicircularis, and in the mesencephalic cerebellar nucleus. Numerous perikarya were also distributed in all cerebral cortex. Important

Background: Congenital abdominal wall defects (CAWDs), primarily gastroschisis and omphalocele, result from disturbances in early embryonic folding and midgut development and are routinely detected during prenatal ultrasound screening. Despite advances in prenatal imaging, considerable heterogeneity in clinical presentation, severity, and outcomes necessitates structured risk stratification to optimize prenatal and perinatal management. Objectives: We aimed to present a series of prenatally diagnosed congenital abdominal wall defects and integrate current evidence into a clinically applicable,

BACKGROUND: The endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) is the mainstay of resection for lesions in the retroinfundibular area and the prepontine and interpeduncular cisterns. Owing to the anatomical barrier of structures such as the pituitary gland (PG)/pituitary stalk (PS), dorsum sellae (DS) and posterior clinoid process (PCPs), sufficient tumour resection often requires displacement of the pituitary gland and varying degrees of bony resection.
METHODS: We retrospectively studied the clinical data of 23 patients, from June 2016 to February 2023,who underwent endoscopic endonasal intradural pit

The tracheotomy site usually closes spontaneously after decannulation, but in rare cases, it develops into tracheocutaneous fistula. We experienced a case of tracheocutaneous fistula that was successfully treated with the combination of auricular cartilage grafting and sternocleidomastoid muscle flap. In this case, we performed the closure of tracheocutaneous fistula with a view to filling the tissue defect with soft tissue to prevent recurrence. The surgical procedure performed in this case was unique, which to our knowledge, has not been described previously. Herein, we report some findings

Anti-ganglioside antibodies (anti-Gg Abs) have been linked to delayed/poor clinical recovery in both axonal and demyelinating forms of Guillain-Barrè Syndrome (GBS). In many instances, the incomplete recovery is attributed to the peripheral nervous system's failure to regenerate. The cross-linking of cell surface gangliosides by anti-Gg Abs triggers inhibition of nerve repair in both in vitro and in vivo axon regeneration paradigms. This mechanism involves the activation of the small GTPase RhoA, which negatively modulates the growth cone cytoskeleton. At present, the identity/es of the recept

The addition of antibiotics as growth promoters to ruminant feed can result in bacterial resistance and antibiotic residues in ruminant products. Correspondingly, there is serious public concern regarding the presence of antibiotic residue in ruminant products and the consequent threat to human health. As a result, the addition of plants and their products to ruminant feeds, as an alternative to antibiotics, has received much attention recently. Garlic and its products are rich in organosulphur compounds, which have a variety of biological activities and have been widely used as natural additi

Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory condition that can impact multiple organs in the body such as the lungs, skin, eyes, and, occasionally, the central nervous system. When sarcoidosis affects the nervous system, it is referred to as neurosarcoidosis and is estimated to occur in approximately 5%-15% of sarcoid patients. When neurosarcoidosis affects the pituitary gland, it can result in panhypopituitarism, which can be life-threatening. A 35-year-old male with a known diagnosis of sarcoidosis by skin biopsies presented to the hospital with altered mental status, hypernatremia, hypotension, and hypo

Surgery for pituitary adenoma is indicated for relief of mass effect and control of endocrinopathy. Setting benchmarks for visual and hormonal outcomes is important for monitoring performance of surgical centres, while understanding the preoperative factors that predict endocrine cure and visual improvement facilitates tailored counselling for patients prior to surgery. A prospective, consecutive cohort of surgically managed (endoscopic transsphenoidal) pituitary adenoma (n = 304) were analysed. Preoperative and postoperative endocrine and visual field assessments were performed and compared t

BACKGROUND: Primary nasopharyngeal lymphoma (NPL) is a very rare tumor of Waldeyer ring (WR) lymphoid tissue. It is challenging to differentiate lymphoma infiltration of pituitary from a pituitary adenoma, meningioma infiltration, and other sellar lesions to plan a suitable treatment strategy. We presented for the first time a unique case of NPL with an unusual presentation of oculomotor nerve palsy associated with pan-pituitary involvement in a diabetic patient.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 64-year old diabetic woman with no previous history of malignancy presented with intermittent diplopia for abo

OBJECTIVE: To examine the performance of the routine 11-13-week scan in detecting fetal non-chromosomal abnormalities.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study of prospectively collected data from 100 997 singleton pregnancies attending for a routine ultrasound examination of fetal anatomy, performed according to a standardized protocol, at 11-13 weeks' gestation. All continuing pregnancies had an additional scan at 18-24 weeks and 71 754 had a scan at either 30-34 or 35-37 weeks. The final diagnosis of fetal abnormality was based on the results of postnatal examination in cases of live birth

BACKGROUND: Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia type 2 (HHT2) is an inherited genetic disorder characterized by vascular malformations and hemorrhage. HHT2 results from ACVRL1 haploinsufficiency, the remaining wild-type allele being unable to contribute sufficient protein to sustain endothelial cell function. Blood vessels function normally but are prone to respond to angiogenic stimuli, leading to the development of telangiectasic lesions that can bleed. How ACVRL1 haploinsufficiency leads to pathological angiogenesis is unknown.
METHODS: We took advantage of Acvrl1+/- mutant mice that exh
