[Limbus-parallel keratotomies with compression sutures in treatment of high astigmatism after perforating keratoplasty: a vector analysis and topographic study].

BACKGROUND: Visual acuity following penetrating keratoplasty is frequently limited by excessive astigmatism which cannot be compensated for with spectacles or contact lenses. The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of arcuate keratotomies and compression sutures on the amount and regularity of corneal astigmatism and on the visual acuity. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between June 1989 and August 1995, 56 eyes from 56 patients (30 women, 26 men, average age 53 +/- 16 years) with excessive post-penetrating keratoplasty astigmatism were treated with paired arcuate cuts and compression sut

Interventions for improving outcomes in patients with multimorbidity in primary care and community settings.

BACKGROUND: Many people with chronic disease have more than one chronic condition, which is referred to as multimorbidity. The term comorbidity is also used but this is now taken to mean that there is a defined index condition with other linked conditions, for example diabetes and cardiovascular disease. It is also used when there are combinations of defined conditions that commonly co-exist, for example diabetes and depression. While this is not a new phenomenon, there is greater recognition of its impact and the importance of improving outcomes for individuals affected. Research in the area

Triple treatment therapy for congenital stromal iris cyst.

BACKGROUND: Iris cyst can lead to iridocyclitis, angle closure, secondary glaucoma, corneal decompensation, band keratopathy, cataract, subluxation of the lens, or visual disturbance leading to amblyopia or strabismus. Incomplete removal of cyst can lead to recurrence. Recurrent surgeries are more complicated and compromise prognosis. So, complete removal of cyst with minimal anatomical disturbances is essential for better outcomes. PURPOSE: To define a new technique of triple treatment therapy for iris cyst management. SYNOPSIS: Iris cyst was treated in three steps. In the first step, iris

Citicoline: pharmacological and clinical review, 2006 update.

Cytidine 5'-diphosphocholine, CDP-choline, or citicoline is an essential intermediate in the biosynthetic pathway of structural phospholipids in cell membranes, particularly phosphatidylcholine. Following administration by both the oral and parenteral routes, citicoline releases its two main components, cytidine and choline. Absorption by the oral route is virtually complete, and bioavailability by the oral route is therefore approximately the same as by the intravenous route. Once absorbed, citicoline is widely distributed throughout the body, crosses the blood-brain barrier and reaches the c

Stereopsis Assessment in a Pediatric Population and Its Association With Refractive Error: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Stereopsis is the perception of depth arising from binocular vision and is essential for fine motor skills and overall visual function in children. It has been observed that refractive errors diminish binocular function by causing visual blur and impairing fusion, which results in poor stereopsis. Poor stereoacuity can lead to inferior quality of vision and substandard work performance, especially where good eye-hand coordination and visual motor skills are required. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to assess the level of stereoacuity among children with refractive errors a

[Early correction of hyperopia and astigmatism in children leads to better development of visual acuity].

BACKGROUND: From the investigations of Wiesel and Hubel an influence of early spectacle correction of refractive errors on visual development is to be expected. Nevertheless the benefit of early spectacle correction in young children is being discussed controversially. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a retrospective study the records of 103 strabismic children were analyzed. Myopic children and those with hypermetropia less than 2.0 diopters without astigmatism were excluded from this study. Visual acuity of the dominant eye only was compared between the following subgroups: early spectacle correcti
