Prevalence and determinants of asymptomatic malaria infection among schoolchildren in Africa: insights from a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic school children serve as a reservoir for ongoing transmission, and asymptomatic malaria infection contributes to cognitive impairment and school absenteeism. Therefore, this review aims to determine the pooled prevalence of asymptomatic malaria infection and the factors associated with it in school children. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis adhered to the PRISMA guidelines. We searched online databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), and ScienceDirect, to review the literature. The Conditi

Effects of Pregnancy-associated Malaria on T Cell Cytokines in Cameroonian Women.

Although Th17 cells subsets improve immunity against extra and intracellular pathogens, and in modulating Th1 and other immune responses, its role on pregnancy-associated malaria (PAM) is unknown. This study aims to investigate the effects of PAM on Th1 (IFN-γ, TNF-α), IL-10 family (IL-10, IL-19, IL-22), Th17 (IL-17A, IL-23) cytokines and on CXCL-10 chemokine profiles in pregnant women. Between 2010 and 2011, venous blood specimens from 107 volunteer pregnant Cameroonian women was used to determine parasitaemia microscopically and haemoglobin levels using HemoCue analyzer. [Vaginal birth after previous cesarean section in low-resource countries: healthcare chain and materno-fetal follow-up].

The rate of uterine scars, an established risk factor for obstetric morbidity, is increasing worldwide. In developing countries, spontaneous uterine ruptures may constitute 87.4% of cases. Tratment is a problem in modern obstetrics, in particular in these countries. This study aims to describe healthcare chain and materno-fetal follow-up of post-partum women with uterine scar in three university hospitals in the city of Yaoundé in order to highlight morbidity management problems in low-resource countries at the dawn of sustainable development goals. We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive s

Demographic, epidemiological, and health transitions: are they relevant to population health patterns in Africa?

BackgroundStudies of trends in population changes and epidemiological profiles in the developing world have overwhelmingly relied upon the concepts of demographic, epidemiological, and health transitions, even though their usefulness in describing and understanding population and health trends in developing countries has been repeatedly called into question. The issue is particularly relevant for the study of population health patterns in Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, as the history and experience there differs substantially from that of Western Europe and North America, for which these conce

A systematic review of the epidemiology and the public health implications of stroke in Sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: With approximately 11 million strokes occurring annually worldwide, and over 6.5 million deaths annually, stroke has made its place as one of the major killers in the world. Although developing countries make up more than 4/5 of the global stroke burden, well-grounded information on stroke epidemiology remains lacking there. AIMS: This systematic review study aimed to provide a synthesis of studies on the incidence and prevalence of stroke among adults in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), subsequently deduce the associated risk factors and public health implications (mortality rates and e

Tracking Demographic Movements and Immunization Status to Improve Children's Access to Immunization: Field-Based Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Countries' Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) contribute to the reduction of mortality and morbidity, but access to these vaccines remains limited in most low-income countries. OBJECTIVE: We aim to assess whether involving community volunteers (CVs) to track children's vaccination status and demographic movements and using recorded data to plan catch-up immunization sessions can improve children's vaccination timeliness, completeness, and coverage. METHODS: This was a field-based randomized controlled trial and communities of the Foumban health district in West Cameroon were

Leveraging Polio Geographic Information System Platforms in the African Region for Mitigating COVID-19 Contact Tracing and Surveillance Challenges: Viewpoint.

BACKGROUND: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in Africa is an urgent public health crisis. Estimated models projected over 150,000 deaths and 4,600,000 hospitalizations in the first year of the disease in the absence of adequate interventions. Therefore, electronic contact tracing and surveillance have critical roles in decreasing COVID-19 transmission; yet, if not conducted properly, these methods can rapidly become a bottleneck for synchronized data collection, case detection, and case management. While the continent is currently reporting relatively low COVID-19 cases, digitized contact tracing

Pyronaridine-artesunate real-world safety, tolerability, and effectiveness in malaria patients in 5 African countries: A single-arm, open-label, cohort event monitoring study.

BACKGROUND: In Phase II/III randomized controlled clinical trials for the treatment of acute uncomplicated malaria, pyronaridine-artesunate demonstrated high efficacy and a safety profile consistent with that of comparators, except that asymptomatic, mainly mild-to-moderate transient increases in liver aminotransferases were reported for some patients. Hepatic safety, tolerability, and effectiveness have not been previously assessed under real-world conditions in Africa. METHODS AND FINDINGS: This single-arm, open-label, cohort event monitoring study was conducted at 6 health centers in Camer

Effect of systematic tuberculosis detection on mortality in young children with severe pneumonia in countries with high incidence of tuberculosis: a stepped-wedge cluster-randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis diagnosis might be delayed or missed in children with severe pneumonia because this diagnosis is usually only considered in cases of prolonged symptoms or antibiotic failure. Systematic tuberculosis detection at hospital admission could increase case detection and reduce mortality. METHODS: We did a stepped-wedge cluster-randomised trial in 16 hospitals from six countries (Cambodia, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Mozambique, Uganda, and Zambia) with high incidence of tuberculosis. Children younger than 5 years with WHO-defined severe pneumonia received either the standard o

Evaluation of the Antimalarial Potential of a Combination of Terminalia macroptera and Erythrina sigmoidea: In Vitro and In Silico Assays.

BACKGROUND: Due to the increasing resistance of malaria parasites to antimalarial drugs, medicinal plants are increasingly being employed to cure malaria. The purpose of this study is to establish the cytotoxicity, antioxidant, and antiplasmodial activity of a mixture of Terminalia macroptera and Erythrina sigmoidea extracts, two plants that have been traditionally used together in the management of malaria in Cameroon's Western Region. METHODS: The stem bark extracts of both plants were formulated according to established protocols. Previous studies reported the use of blends of E. sigmoidea

Communication key for family planning.

4 reports published by Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) include information from husbands of the wives interviewed in the main part of the survey. All are from Africa--Burundi (1987), Ghana (1988), Kenya (1988) and Mali (1987). These surveys of husbands indicate the importance of programs that work to improve communication between spouses about family planning. In particular, they show a positive association between contraceptive prevalence and husband and wife communication about family planning. Husbands and wives were asked how often they discussed family planning in the past year. In K

World Kidney Day as a Platform for Action: Early Outcomes of a Vascular Access Mission in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Background and aim Resource-limited settings in sub-Saharan Africa face critical barriers to arteriovenous fistula (AVF) creation, forcing hemodialysis patients into prolonged dependence on catheters, with the associated risks of infection and increased mortality. Ngaoundéré, a referral city in northern Cameroon, launched chronic hemodialysis services in February 2023 but lacks a resident vascular surgeon. Consequently, nearly all incident patients initiate hemodialysis using temporary central venous catheters (CVCs), a practice associated with well-documented complications. This retrospective
