The functional intraoral Glasgow scale in floor of mouth carcinoma: longitudinal assessment of 62 consecutive patients.

The functional integrity of the floor of the mouth (FOM) is essential in maintaining tongue mobility, deglutition, and control and disposal of saliva. The present study focused on reporting oral function using functional intraoral Glasgow scale (FIGS) in patients who had surgical ablation and reconstruction of FOM carcinoma with or without chemo-radiotherapy. The study included patients who had surgical treatment of floor of mouth cancer in two regional head and neck units in Glasgow, UK between January 2006 and August 2007. Patients were assessed using FIGS before surgery, 2 months, 6 months

Teeth contacting habit as a contributing factor to chronic pain in patients with temporomandibular disorders.

Many different factors are known to cause and perpetuate the symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). However, the roles of parafunctional factors have not been clearly elucidated. We found one of these habits in the clinical setting. This parafunctional habit involves daily light touching of the upper and lower teeth, when the mouth is closed. We named this habit Teeth Contacting Habit (TCH). [OBJECTIVES] To investigate the following hypotheses: 1) TCH is associated with perpetuation of chronic pain of TMD patients; 2) TCH is associated with other behavioral factors. [METHODS] Two hundr

The superior colliculus contains a discrete region involved in the control of jaw movements: role of GABAA receptors.

The role of GABA(A) receptors in the superior colliculus in the production of rat repetitive jaw movements was examined, as this nucleus receives tonic GABAergic inhibitory inputs from the dorsolateral part of the substantia nigra pars reticulata and the entopeduncular nucleus. Both regions are also connected with the ventrolateral striatum where stimulation of either dopamine or acetylcholine receptors has been found to elicit distinct types of jaw movements in rats. The GABA(A) receptor antagonist bicuculline (50 and 150 ng/0.2 microl per side) dose-dependently produced repetitive jaw moveme

Clinical assessment of common patient complaints with complete dentures.

The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships between patient complaints with complete dentures and several factors such as age, gender, medical status and denture faults. Six hundred patients who received new dentures were assessed three months after insertion of the dentures. Patient complaints were scored according to their answers to specific questions. Denture quality was recorded by one prosthodontist using a validated classification of aspects of denture quality. No significant relationship was found when age, gender, and medical status were compared with patient complaints

Dopamine D(1A) receptor function in a rodent model of tardive dyskinesia.

Tardive dyskinesia develops as a common complication of long-term neuroleptic use. The emergence of such dyskinesias may reflect a shift in the balance of dopamine D(1) and D(2) receptor-mediated activity, with a relative increase in activity in the D(1) receptor-regulated direct striatonigral pathway. In rats, chronic treatment with the antipsychotic fluphenazine triggers a syndrome of vacuous chewing movements, which are attenuated by dopamine D(1) receptor antagonists. A similar syndrome can be seen in drug-naive animals following acute administration of selective dopamine D(1) receptor ago

Nutrient intake and gastrointestinal disorders related to masticatory performance in the edentulous elderly.

The effects of chewing efficiency on nutrient intake and the prevalence of gastrointestinal disorders were determined in edentulous elderly subjects. Three hundred sixty-seven noninstitutionalized individuals aged 60 years and over were interviewed. Denture masticatory performance and the collection of dietary information were assessed with the "Swallowing Threshold Test Index" and a food-frequency questionnaire. Approximately half (47%) of the participants exhibited a low masticatory performance classification. Thirty-nine percent used the same prosthesis for more than 10 years and 28% were t

[The impact of cleft lip and palate on the parent-child relationships].

Cleft lips and palates (CLPs) are the most common human facial malformations. Depending on the ethnic and/or geographical origin of the studied populations, they can affect up to 1/500 newborns. The treatment of these patients is multidisciplinary because these malformations have not only aesthetic consequences but also functional consequences as the phonation, hearing, deglutition, mastication and ventilation are altered. These consequences can also be psychological since the building of the body image, the way others perceive it, is likely to be seriously altered. In Europe there are over 21

Predictors and Clinical Outcomes of Level IV Nodal Metastasis in Oral Cavity Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Retrospective Cohort Study of 578 Node-Positive Patients.

Background Nodal metastasis in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) is associated with poorer prognosis. Limited evidence is available on the predictive factors and prognostic significance of level IV nodal metastasis. This study evaluated patient outcomes by analyzing disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) in individuals with level IV nodal involvement. Methods The cohort for this retrospective study comprised all patients with node-positive OCSCC who underwent surgery between August 2011 and June 2021. The patients' demographic and treatment details were abstracted from

The aging mouth: differentiating normal aging from disease.

Aging is the physiologic change that occurs over time. In humans, this change occurs at different rates and are related to lifestyle, environment and genetics. It can be challenging to differentiate normal aging from disease. In the oral cavity, with increasing age the teeth demonstrate wearing of the enamel, chipping and fracture lines, and a darker color. The pulp chamber and canals are reduced in size as a result of the deposition of secondary dentin. Coronal or root caries, however, represent disease. A limited amount of periodontal attachment loss occurs in association with aging, usually
