Rat choriocarcinoma (Rcho) cells, which are morphologically similar to trophoblast giant cells of the normal placenta and produce placental lactogen-I in vivo, were used to investigate placental feedback on PRL secretion and tuberoinfundibular dopaminergic neuronal activity. Rcho cells were injected into female rats either intracerebroventricularly 60-65 h before use or under the kidney capsule 10-14 days before use. The following endocrine conditions were used: 1) ovariectomized rats with or without bromocriptine treatment, 2) immature (40-44 days old) rats, 3) adult cycling (diestrous) rats,

The mouse First arch mutation, Far, causes a severe syndrome of craniofacial defects described previously. All of the known defects are derived from the anterior first arch, and to a very small extent, the dorsal second arch. Recently Far has been shown to be closely linked to Ulnaless on chromosome 2, and therefore in the vicinity of the Hox-4 gene cluster. This paper reports the results of several studies focused on the development origin of the most consistently expressed dominant effect caused by Far, an abnormal major bifurcation of the maxillary nerve. Nerve-stained whole-mount preparati

During eye development in the axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum Shaw), morphogenetic movements bring together tissues from head epidermis, neuroectoderm and neural crest. The stages 0 to 14 of axolotl eye development were expanded from Rabl's (1898) stages 1 to 10 and correlated with Harrison's (1969) stages. At the onset of neurulation (stage 13 of Harrison), the head epidermis is already determined to form skin, and the neuroectoderm is committed to form brain, because these tissues develop autonomously in 60% Leibovitz L-15 culture medium. However, a sequence of mutual tissue interactions is nec

Neurons within the basilar pontine gray (BPG) of the American opossum can be subdivided into four major nuclei which are named medial, lateral, ventral and peripeduncular in accordance with previous studies. In addition, several smaller subnuclei, such as the median and dorsolateral cell groups, are present, as well as two longitudinal columns of neurons within the ventral nucleus. Neurons in the BPG range in size from 9 to 35 mu and appear randomly distributed so that none of the subdivisions contains exclusively nerve cells of the same perikaryal dimension. Projection neurons as shown in Gol

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Brain [18F] fluoroestradiol (FES) PET enables noninvasive assessment of estrogen receptor (ER) expression and may improve the detection of ER-positive (ER+) breast cancer brain metastases (BC-BM), with pilot studies demonstrating clinical utility. Our aim was to leverage our dynamic brain [18F] FES PET acquisition protocol to characterize BC-BM uptake kinetics across different postinjection intervals, with the goal of improving lesion detectability.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with ER+ primary disease and BC-BM were enrolled prospectively and underwent dynamic [18F

UNLABELLED: Salinity is a major abiotic factor limiting sugarcane productivity. In the present study, eight sugarcane interspecific hybrids were evaluated under control (3 dS m⁻¹) and salinity stress conditions (9 dS m⁻¹) using an integrated approach encompassing morpho-physiological, anatomical, root system architecture, ionic, and molecular studies. Under salinity stress, certain interspecific hybrids exhibited enhanced tillering (40.9%), internode production (15.8%), maintenance of SPAD values, increased Fv/Fm (5.6%), and a moderate reduction in stalk diameter (2.19%) and Leaf Area Index (5

Background: CT is limited for local staging of bladder cancer due to insufficient soft-tissue contrast. Photon-counting detector (PCD) CT with low-keV virtual monoenergetic images (VMIs) provides greater lesion contrast with acceptable image noise and high resolution and may aid assessment for muscle invasion. Objective: To compare the performance of low-keV VMIs and conventional polychromatic images for diagnosing muscle invasion on PCD CT in patients with bladder cancer. Methods: This prospective study included patients with pathologically confirmed bladder cancer who underwent preoperative

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The number of patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy for cancer is expected to increase further; hence, heightened awareness of immune-related adverse effects (irAEs) such as hypophysitis (ICI-Hp) is essential. Acute ICI-Hp is a common endocrine irAE of ICI therapy, and our aim was to describe its diagnostic pattern, treatment outcomes, endocrinopathies, and recovery.
METHODS: Records and imaging of all patients with ICI-Hp (n = 22), referred to a dedicated endocrine-ICI clinic, were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: The median time for onset of

OBJECTIVE: Giant craniopharyngiomas (GCPs) (diameter > 4 cm) are rare tumors that present significant surgical challenges due to their tendency to invade multiple compartments. To date, no studies have directly compared the expanded endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) with the traditional transcranial approach (TCA) for the resection of GCPs. This study aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of these two surgical approaches within a single institution.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on the medical records of patients with GCP who underwent surgery at the authors' instit

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Given their overlapping features, pituitary metastases frequently imitate pituitary neuroendocrine tumors in neuroimaging studies. This study aimed to distinguish pituitary metastases from pituitary neuroendocrine tumors on the basis of conventional MR imaging and clinical features as a practical approach.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this 2-center retrospective study, backward from January 2024, preoperative pituitary MR imaging examinations of 22 pituitary metastases and 74 pituitary neuroendocrine tumors were analyzed. Exclusion criteria were as follows: absence of a d

OBJECTIVES: Total surgical resection is the gold standard in the treatment of craniopharyngioma. However, there is concern that aggressive surgical resection might result in high rates of endocrinologic, metabolic, and behavioral morbidities. Subtotal resection (SR) with subsequent radiation therapy (RT) may reduce surgical complications, but it may also increase the risk of tumor recurrence and radiation-induced side effects. Therefore, the optimal surgical strategy remains debatable.
METHODS: To determine the optimal surgical strategy, we assessed the clinical courses of 39 patients (19 mal

Pandemic H1N1 (pH1N1) influenza virus emerged from swine in 2009 with an adequate capability to infect and transmit between people. In subsequent years, it has circulated as a seasonal virus and evolved further human-adapting mutations. Mutations in the hemagglutinin (HA) stalk that increase pH stability have been associated with human adaptation and airborne transmission of pH1N1 virus. Yet, our understanding of how pH stability impacts virus-host interactions is incomplete. Here, using recombinant viruses with point mutations that alter the pH stability of pH1N1 HA, we found distinct effects

In 2004, diabetes insipidus was the first clinical sign of Erdheim-Chester disease in our patient. Following introduction of substitution therapy with adiuretin, the patient had no further health complaints for four years until 2008 when he gradually developed dysarthria and, consequently, movement disorder in the form of mild right hemiparesis. The first CNS CT scan (2004) did not reveal any pathology. The first pathological MRI of the brain in 2006 - thickening of pituitary stalk by pathological infiltration to 4-5 mm. During the following year, further infiltrates were detected in the CNS.

Central diabetes insipidus (CDI) has been linked to vascular central nervous system damage, although the pathophysiology of the mechanism has never been perfectly understood. Indeed, the vascular system of human pituitary gland has rarely been the subject of rigorous investigation except at postmortem. Recently, studies of pituitary gland blood supply have been carried out by means of a time evaluation of pituitary gland enhancement with noninvasive dynamic magnetic resonance (MR) imaging after contrast medium injection. In the present study, we decided to investigate the status of posterior p

The structure of the pineal complex and the annual reproductive cycle in a major Indian carp, Catla catla, were investigated in the present study. Additionally, given the well-known inhibitory effects of the pineal on reproductive function in mammals, attempts were made to investigate whether or not the pineal exerts an inhibitory influence on reproductive function in this piscine species as well. Sexually adult animals were utilized in all experiments. The cytomorphology of the pineal complex and a number of parameters for testicular function--such as testicular cytology, serum testosterone l

Mild hyperprolactinemia frequently accompanies the hypopituitarism seen in patients with pituitary macroadenomas that do not secrete PRL. Recent data suggested that the hypopituitarism and mild hyperprolactinemia in this setting are largely due to compression of pituitary stalk and portal vessels. Headaches (HAs) are frequently seen in patients with large adenomas and at times in those with microadenomas. Because the walls of the sella turcica are relatively rigid, we postulate that tumor growth within the sella increases intrasellar pressure (ISP), which in turn impairs portal blood flow, res

Organogenesis occurs during the first 8 weeks of human embryonic development; in consequence, early human growth and development take place before and in the absence of fully developed internal organs. During this period, normal development depends on several factors, but two are imperative: nutrition and a functional transport system for the distribution of nutrients and for waste disposal. The yolk sac (YS), a highly differentiated adnexal organ, is known to accomplish this fundamental task during early pregnancy. In this review, we summarize our contribution to the understanding of early hu

Virusencephalitis is characterised by clinical symptoms of a parenchymatous inflammation. In addition, early mental status changes often occur as a result of virusencephalitis, beside focal neurological deficiencies, epileptic seizures, cerebral compression, even coma. Other pathological manifestations of virusencephalitis are disturbances of the neurohumoral and the endocrine system, which are often recognised and treated too late. This case report describes symptoms, treatment, and complications of a 76 year old female in-patient, who was diagnosed with virusencephalitis. The number of lymph

"It is not the death of GERD that I seek, but that it turns from its evil ways and follows the path of righteousness." The reflux world is fully aware of what GERD is and what GERD does. What the world does not know, however, is the answer to the most important yet least asked question surrounding GERD's raison-d'etre: Why is GERD here and why do we have it? What GERD is: abnormal gastric reflux into the esophagus that causes any type of mischief. What GERD does: causes discomfort and/or pain with or without destroying the mucosa; causes stricture or stenosis, preventing food from being swallo

Pituitary adenomas are frequently encountered, benign intracranial tumours. Clinically classified according to their capacity to produce and secrete hormones, pituitary tumours are diagnosed from the clinical manifestations and biochemical findings of specific pituitary hormone overproduction or of impaired pituitary function due to pressure on normal pituitary cells, the pituitary stalk or the hypothalamus. Additionally, the tumour may result in neurological manifestations due to its effect as an intracranial space-occupying lesion. Pituitary adenomas may present acutely with pituitary apople
