Class III malocclusion with complex problems of lateral open bite and severe crowding successfully treated with miniscrew anchorage and lingual orthodontic brackets.

In this article, we report the successful use of miniscrews in a patient with an Angle Class III malocclusion, lateral open bite, midline deviation, and severe crowding. Simultaneously resolving such problems with conventional Class III treatment is difficult. In this case, the treatment procedure was even more challenging because the patient preferred to have lingual brackets on the maxillary teeth. As a result, miniscrews were used to facilitate significant asymmetric tooth movement in the posterior and downward directions; this contributed to the camouflage of the skeletal mandibular protru

Efficacy of conventional and implant-supported mandibular resection prostheses: study overview and treatment outcomes.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: While surgical restoration of mandibular resections has advanced dramatically with free-flap techniques, oral function and patient perceptions of function, as well as treatment outcomes, often indicate significant impairment. PURPOSE: This longitudinal prospective study was designed to determine whether conventional prostheses (CP) or implant-supported prostheses (IP) and current surgical reconstructive procedures restore patients' oral functions and quality of life to their status prior to segmental mandibulectomy with immediate fibula free-flap reconstruction. Comparative study of maxillary complete dentures constructed of metal base and metal structure framework.

A removable denture designed using a three-dimensional cast metal framework (hereafter referred to as the 'structurally designed' denture) could extend denture longevity because it is unbreakable and easy to adjust. The aim of the present clinical study was to compare two types of maxillary removable dentures: conventional dentures and structurally designed denture. One edentulous and five partially dentate patients were fitted with two maxillary dentures made from the same impression and same occlusal relationship. About 20 days after delivery of the denture, masticatory analysis was conducte

miR-200b ameliorates myofibroblast transdifferentiation in precancerous oral submucous fibrosis through targeting ZEB2.

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is a progressive scarring disease. MicroRNA-200b (miR-200b) has been reported as a tumour suppressor, but its role in the precancerous OSF remains unknown. In this study, we investigated the impact of miR-200b on myofibroblastic differentiation activity. Arecoline is a major areca nut alkaloid and has been employed to induce the elevated myofibroblast activity in human buccal mucosal fibroblasts (BMFs). Treatment of arecoline in BMFs dose-dependently reduced gene expression of miR-200b, which corresponded with the decreased expression of miR-200b in fBMFs. The are

Perception of children and mothers regarding dental aesthetics and orthodontic treatment need: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The normative orthodontic treatment need, established by dental professionals during the dental appointment, becomes ineffective when it does not evaluate all the factors that influence the decision-making process, including individuals' perception and satisfaction with their dental appearance. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the perception of children and their mothers as regards orthodontic treatment need and satisfaction with dental aesthetics and test if these variables are associated with the objective orthodontic treatment needs, assessed by the Dental

A long-term comparative study of two rigid internal fixation techniques in terms of masticatory function and neurosensory disturbance after mandibular correction by bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy.

Bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSO) is widely used to treat mandibular prognathism. Several methods have been described for fixation of the bony segments. This study compared two methods of rigid fixation (bicortical screws and monocortical miniplates) to identify differences in postoperative masticatory function and neurosensory disturbance after 5 years of mandibular set-back correction. 77 women who had undergone BSSO for Class III malocclusion were reviewed, and masticatory functions and neurosensory recovery were examined with the appropriate indicators pre- and postoperativel

Place of sagittal split osteotomy in mandibular surgery.

With the development of craniofacial surgery, today sagittal split mandibular osteotomies are frequently used for the treatment of mandibular deformities with modifications and different fixation techniques. In clinics, 57 patients are evaluated in this study. Of these patients, 35 were male, 22 were female, and their ages were between 17 and 47 years (on average, it was 23 years). Thirty-seven of these patients were treated with bilateral sagittal split mandibular osteotomy (SSMO), 12 of them with unilateral SSMO, 6 of them with bilateral SSMO + Le Fort I osteotomy, and 2 of them with bilater

Postnatal development of masseteric motoneurons in congenital hypothyroid rats.

It has been known that an intact thyroid hormone is obligatory for the attainment of the normal masticatory function at the time of weaning. Following induced maternal thyroid hypo-function, the development of masseter motoneurons was determined at postnatal days 1, 7, 15 and 23 (weaning time), using retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in the normal and hypothyroid pups. Based on the HRP labeling profile (strong and weak), the soma area of the masseteric labeled motoneurons was measured in each group. No significant morphological differences were observed at the end of the fir

Quantitative trait loci affecting methamphetamine responses in BXD recombinant inbred mouse strains.

Individual differences in most behavioral and pharmacological responses to abused drugs are dependent on both genetic and environmental factors. The genetic influences on the complex phenotypes related to drug abuse have been difficult to study using classical genetic analyses. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping is a method that has been used successfully to examine genetic contributions to some of these traits by correlating allelic variation in polymorphic genetic markers of known chromosomal location with variation in drug-response phenotypes. We evaluated several behavioral responses t
