Human viruses in sediments, sludges, and soils.

Recent studies have provided a greater understanding of the movement of viruses in the environment by their attachment to solids. These studies have focused on solids-associated viruses present in wastewater discharged into the ocean and on viruses in sludge and wastewater that may be retained in soil following their land disposal. Such ocean or land disposal of wastewater and sludge may result in a discharge of one or more of 120 human enteric virus pathogens including those causing poliomyelitis, viral hepatitis A and acute gastroenteritis.Solids-associated viruses in effluents discharged in

Why are vaccines against many human viral diseases still unavailable; an historic perspective?

The number of new and improved human viral vaccines licensed in recent years contrasts sharply with what could be termed the golden era (1955-1990) when vaccines against polio-, measles, mumps, rubella, and hepatitis B viruses first became available. Here, we attempt to explain why vaccines, mainly against viruses other than human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis C virus, are still unavailable. They include human herpesviruses other than varicella-zoster virus, respiratory syncytial and most other respiratory, enteric and arthropod-borne viruses. Improved oral poliovirus vaccines are also

Seasonal variation in etiology of travelers' diarrhea. Finnish-Moroccan Study Group.

The etiology of travelers' diarrhea was studied in 579 adult Finnish tourists participating in two packaged tours to Morocco in the winter (n = 233) and fall (n = 346) of 1989. A research team accompanied the travelers, and a laboratory for enteric pathogens was established in Agadir. At least one pathogen was found in 62% of the 60 diarrhea cases in winter and in 58% of the 111 diarrhea cases in fall. Multiple pathogens were found less often in winter (8%) than in fall (21%, P less than .05). Campylobacter strains were the leading cause of travelers' diarrhea in winter, found alone or with ot

The need for new antiviral agents.

Population density and immune status, vectors and virulence of infection, nutritional status, sanitation, genetic susceptibility and medical management of cases, are important factors influencing the incidence and/or severity of virus infections. Thus, the prevalence and clinical importance of virus infections and the need for antiviral drugs differ from place to place and from time to time. National and World Health Statistics of notifications of disease give some index of the incidence of infections but not all virus infections are notifiable. Such statistics can be misleading also through f

How the gut microbiome regulates host immune responses to viral vaccines.

The co-evolution of the microbiota and immune system has forged a mutually beneficial relationship. This relationship allows the host to maintain the balance between active immunity to pathogens and vaccines and tolerance to self-antigens and food antigens. In children living in low-income and middle-income countries, undernourishment and repetitive gastrointestinal infections are associated with the failure of oral vaccines. Intestinal dysbiosis associated with these environmental influences, as well as some host-related factors, compromises immune responses and negatively impacts vaccine eff

Vaccination coverage in Lebanon following the Syrian crisis: results from the district-based immunization coverage evaluation survey 2016.

BACKGROUND: Following the Syrian crisis, a substantial influx of Syrian refugees into Lebanon posed new challenges to optimal vaccination coverage for all children residing in the country. In 2016, the district-based immunization coverage evaluation survey (CES) assessed routine immunization coverage at the district level in Lebanon among children aged 12-59 months. METHODS: A cross-sectional multistage cluster survey was conducted in all of Lebanon (with the exception of the Nabatieh district) using the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) meth

Travelers' diarrhea. NIH Consensus Development Conference.

Diarrhea is the major health problem in travelers to developing countries. Travel to high-risk areas in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia is associated with diarrhea rates of 20% to 50%. The syndrome is caused by an infection acquired by ingesting fecally contaminated food or beverages. Escherichia coli, a common species of enteric bacteria, is the leading pathogen, although a host of other bacteria, viruses, and protozoa have been implicated in some cases. Prudent dietary and hygienic practices should be followed, and they will prevent some, but not all, diarrhea. Antimicrobial

Novel algorithms for improved pattern recognition using the US FDA Adverse Event Network Analyzer.

The medical review of adverse event reports for medical products requires the processing of "big data" stored in spontaneous reporting systems, such as the US Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). VAERS data are not well suited to traditional statistical analyses so we developed the FDA Adverse Event Network Analyzer (AENA) and three novel network analysis approaches to extract information from these data. Our new approaches include a weighting scheme based on co-occurring triplets in reports, a visualization layout inspired by the islands algorithm, and a network growth methodology

The diagnostic value of serum interleukins 6 and 8 in children with acute gastroenteritis.

OBJECTIVES: Early identification of the pathogen causing acute gastroenteritis in children helps the physicians managing the disease and prevents unnecessary antibiotic treatment. C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL) 6 and IL-8 play a major role in immune responses and have been studied in a large number of infectious and noninfectious inflammatory diseases. The purpose of this study was to determine the serum IL-6 and IL-8 concentrations early in the course of acute gastroenteritis to see if these cytokines were useful diagnostic markers in differentiating viral from bacterial gastroent

Hypertrophy, hyperplasia, and infectious virus in gut-associated lymphoid tissue of mice after oral inoculation with simian-human or bovine-human reassortant rotaviruses.

Oral inoculation of infants with a vaccine that contains simian-human reassortant rotaviruses has been found to be a rare cause of intussusception. Because intussusception can be associated with enlargement of gut-associated lymphoid tissue, we studied the capacity of simian-human and bovine-human reassortant rotaviruses to cause lymphoid hypertrophy and hyperplasia of Peyer's patches (PP) of adult BALB/c mice. Neither hypertrophy nor hyperplasia was detected in PP after oral inoculation with simian-human or bovine-human reassortant rotaviruses. However, infectious virus was detected in PP and

Occurrence of respiratory and enteric bacteria and viruses in calves in Iceland.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases in calves pose a significant challenge to the cattle industry due to their impact on mortality rates, economic losses, animal welfare, and antimicrobial usage. Understanding which pathogens are involved is crucial for optimizing both treatment and preventive measures. In Iceland, bovine respiratory disease in calves is relatively rare, whereas neonatal calf diarrhea is more frequent. However, limited diagnostic resources in the country have resulted in a lack of knowledge about the specific pathogens involved. This study aimed to investigat

Development of a host-signature-based machine learning model to diagnose bacterial and viral infections in febrile children.

BACKGROUND: Early aetiological diagnosis is critical for the management of febrile children with infectious illness, as it strongly influences the choice of appropriate medication and can affect a child's complications and outcome. New diagnostic strategies based on host genes have recently been developed and have achieved high accuracy and clinical practicability. In this study, through integrative bioinformatics analysis, we aimed to construct artificial neural network (ANN, multilayer perceptron) and random forest (RF) models based on host gene signatures to diagnose bacterial or viral (B/V

The use of oral fluids and sock samples for monitoring key pathogens in pig populations for surveillance purposes.

Despite the prevalence of co-infections and the association of over 50 viral and 46 bacterial pathogens with pig diseases, little is known about their simultaneous occurrence, particularly in commercial pig farming environments where health programs are in place. To address this knowledge gap, this study aimed to evaluate the pathogen threshold of respiratory and enteric pathogens in pig herds using the Pork MultiPath™ (PMP1 and PMP2, respiratory and enteric respectively) technology, which detects multiple pathogens simultaneously in a single reaction with high sensitivity and specificity. In

Public Preference and Priorities for Including Vaccines in China's National Immunization Program: Discrete Choice Experiment.

BACKGROUND: Several important vaccines, such as the Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine, rotavirus vaccine, pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, and influenza vaccine, have not been included in China's National Immunization Program (NIP) due to a prolonged absence of updates and limited resources. Public engagement could identify concerns that require attention and foster trust to ensure continuous support for immunization. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify public preferences for vaccine inclusion in the NIP and to determine the desired vaccine funding priorities in the Chinese population.

Modeling the impact of vaccination for the immunization Agenda 2030: Deaths averted due to vaccination against 14 pathogens in 194 countries from 2021 to 2030.

BACKGROUND: The Immunization Agenda 2030 (IA2030) Impact Goal 1.1. aims to reduce the number of future deaths averted through immunization in the next decade. To estimate the potential impact of the aspirational coverage targets for IA2030, we developed an analytical framework and estimated the number of deaths averted due to an ambitious vaccination coverage scenario from 2021 to 2030 in 194 countries. METHOD: A demographic model was used to determine annual age-specific mortality estimates associated with vaccine coverage rates. For ten pathogens (Hepatitis B virus, Haemophilus influenzae t

Immunization status and hospitalization for vaccine-preventable and non-vaccine-preventable infections in liver-transplanted children.

BACKGROUND: Infections and associated morbidity and mortality may be more frequent in children who have undergone liver transplant than in healthy children. Immunization strategies to prevent vaccine-preventable infections (VPIs) can effectively minimize this infection burden. However, data on age-appropriate immunization and VPIs in children after liver transplant in Asia are limited. AIM: To evaluate the immunization status, VPIs and non-VPIs requiring hospitalization in children who have undergone a liver transplant.
