Interaction between fluoride exposure and bone metabolism-related gene polymorphisms in the susceptibility to essential hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Groundwater contaminated with high fluoride levels poses a global public health concern. While fluoride exposure has been linked to hypertension, the role of genetic polymorphisms in bone metabolism-related genes in modulating this relationship remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the associations between fluoride exposure, polymorphisms in bone metabolism-related genes, and susceptibility to essential hypertension in a Han Chinese population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 837 participants (424 hypertension cases and 413 controls)

Cyclic removal and destruction of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances from water using ion exchange, resin regeneration, and UV/sulfite reduction.

Ion exchange (IX) can effectively remove per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from drinking water sources at ng/L to µg/L levels. However, adsorbed PFAS on spent resins should be further destructed for detoxification. Traditional resin incineration or landfilling may cause secondary pollution to the surrounding environment and cannot achieve resin reuse. This study explored three variations of a PFAS treatment train, aiming to completely defluorinate PFAS with different chain lengths and functional groups at environmentally relevant levels (ng/L) and to reuse the resins and solvents. A review of the occurrence and microbial transformation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF)-impacted environments.

Aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) have been extensively used for extinguishing hydrocarbon-fuel fires at military sites, airports, and fire-training areas. Despite being a significant source of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), our understanding of PFAS occurrence in AFFF formulations and AFFF-impacted environments is limited, as is the impact of microbial transformation on the environment fate of AFFF-derived PFAS. This literature review compiles PFAS concentrations in electrochemical fluorination (ECF)- and fluorotelomer (FT)-based AFFFs and provides an overview of PFAS occurrence

Iodine Status in Pregnant Women Having Urinary Fluoride in Contaminated Areas: A Case Study of Phayao Province.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Fluoride naturally occurs in the Earth's crust and is widely dispersed in groundwater. The high consumption of fluoride can inhibit iodine metabolism in the human body, especially in the thyroid gland. This study assessed iodine knowledge, iodine consumption behavior, urinary iodine (UI), thyroid stimulating hormone (serum TSH), and free triiodothyronine3 (serum FT3) and examined the connection between fluoride exposure and UI and thyroid function as serum concentrations of TSH and FT3 in pregnant women dwelling in an area of endemic fluorosis. This was a cross-sectional study. The population

Synthesis and characterization of green rust-deposited MoS2 composites for adsorptive removal of EDTA-chelated Ni(II) in wastewater.

Ethylenediamminetetraacetatonickel(II) (EDTA-Ni(II)) has emerged as a significant soil and groundwater contaminant due to the increasing agricultural and industrial activities, posing environmental challenges. This study focuses on addressing the reactivity of green rust (GR), which can be hindered by oxidation with oxygen, limiting its effectiveness in remediation processes. To overcome this limitation and enhance the adsorptive capacities, the combination of sulfate green rust (SO4-GR) with various Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratios with a high-surface-area adsorbent, MoS2, resulting in the formation of

Treatment and optimization of high-strength egg-wash wastewater effluent using electrocoagulation and electrooxidation methods.

Egg-washing wastewater contains a high concentration of nutrition and organic matter since eggs are broken during the washing and cleaning processes. Moreover, the wastewater contains small amounts of detergents or sanitizing agents. These contaminants may pose environmental challenges when they are not properly managed or treated. The study scrutinizes the efficiency of electrocoagulation (EO) and electrooxidation (EO) approaches for egg-wash wastewater treatment. The response surface methodology was employed to optimize the operational parameters. The removal efficiencies of soluble chemical

Fluoride removal in batch and column systems using bonechar produced in a top-lit updraft drum gasifier and furnace.

Hundreds of millions of people are exposed to excessive levels of fluoride in drinking water, predominately in low-resource communities. Activated alumina is recognized as the best available technology for fluoride removal from drinking water by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, but it has substantial economic and environmental costs. Bonechar is a more environmentally friendly and potentially lower cost alternative adsorbent. Here, fluoride adsorption from groundwater (pH 8.1 ± 0.2) by activated alumina was compared with bonechar primarily produced from bovine bones at peak h

Does normalization of SARS-CoV-2 concentrations by Pepper Mild Mottle Virus improve correlations and lead time between wastewater surveillance and clinical data in Alberta (Canada): comparing twelve SARS-CoV-2 normalization approaches.

Wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) data normalization is an analyte measurement correction that addresses variations resulting from dilution of fecal discharge by non-sanitary sewage, stormwater or groundwater infiltration. No consensus exists on what WBS normalization parameters result in the strongest correlations and lead time between SARS-CoV-2 WBS data and COVID-19 cases. This study compared flow, population size and biomarker normalization impacts on the correlations and lead times for ten communities in twelve sewersheds in Alberta (Canada) between September 2020 and October 2021 (n =

Field-scale monitoring of nitrate leaching in agriculture: assessment of three methods.

Deterioration of groundwater quality due to nitrate loss from intensive agricultural systems can only be mitigated if methods for in-situ monitoring of nitrate leaching under active farmers' fields are available. In this study, three methods were used in parallel to evaluate their spatial and temporal differences, namely ion-exchange resin-based Self-Integrating Accumulators (SIA), soil coring for extraction of mineral N (Nmin) from 0 to 90 cm in Mid-October (pre-winter) and Mid-February (post-winter), and Suction Cups (SCs) complemented by a HYDRUS 1D model. The monitoring, conducted from 201

Batch and continuous studies on the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solution using biosynthesised melanin-coated PVDF membranes.

Heavy metals like mercury, chromium, lead and copper present in groundwater at lower concentrations cause severe health issues and can even be fatal when consumed. The biopigment/biopolymer melanin can be reaped from different sources like bacterium, fungus, and human hair. It has excellent heavy metal ion scavenging property and can be exploited for non-biological applications, substantially including water purification. In this work, melanin nanoparticles were derived from the marine bacterium Pseudomonas stutzeri and were coated onto hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane as a

Transcriptome responses in blood reveal distinct biological pathways associated with arsenic exposure through drinking water in rural settings of Punjab, Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Groundwater Arsenic (As) contamination is a global public health concern responsible for various health implications and a neglected area of environmental health research in Pakistan. Because of interindividual differences in genetic predisposition, As-related health issues may not be equally distributed among the As-exposed population. However, till date, no studies have been conducted including multiple SNPs involved in As metabolism and disease risk using a linear mixed effect model approach to analyze peripheral blood transcriptomics results. OBJECTIVES: In order to detect ear

Copper deficiency can limit nitrification in biological rapid sand filters for drinking water production.

Incomplete nitrification in biological filters during drinking water treatment is problematic, as it compromises drinking water quality. Nitrification problems can be caused by a lack of nutrients for the nitrifying microorganisms. Since copper is an important element in one of the essential enzymes in nitrification, we investigated the effect of copper dosing on nitrification in different biological rapid sand filters treating groundwater. A lab-scale column assay with filter material from a water works demonstrated that addition of a trace metal mixture, including copper, increased ammonium

Simultaneous Transformation of Commingled Trichloroethylene, Tetrachloroethylene, and 1,4-Dioxane by a Microbially Driven Fenton Reaction in Batch Liquid Cultures.

UNLABELLED: Improper disposal of 1,4-dioxane and the chlorinated organic solvents trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (also known as perchloroethylene [PCE]) has resulted in widespread contamination of soil and groundwater. In the present study, a previously designed microbially driven Fenton reaction system was reconfigured to generate hydroxyl (HO˙) radicals for simultaneous transformation of source zone levels of single, binary, and ternary mixtures of TCE, PCE, and 1,4-dioxane. The reconfigured Fenton reaction system was driven by fed batch cultures of the Fe(III)-reducing facu

A possible new mechanism involved in ferro-cyanide metabolism by plants.

BACKGROUND, AIM, AND SCOPE: Ferro-cyanide is one of the commonly found species at cyanide-contaminated soils and groundwater. Unlike botanical metabolism of KCN via the β-cyanoalanine pathway, processes involved in the plant-mediated assimilation of ferro-cyanide are still unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate a possible mechanism involved in uptake and assimilation of ferro-cyanide by plants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Detached roots of plants were exposed to ferro-cyanide in a closed-dark hydroponic system amended with HgCl(2), AgNO(3), LaCl(3), tetraethylammonium chloride (TE

Sonochemical degradation of perfluorooctanesulfonate in aqueous film-forming foams.

Aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) are fire extinguishing agents developed by the Navy to quickly and effectively combat fires occurring close to explosive materials and are utilized today at car races, airports, oil refineries, and military locations. Fluorochemical (FC) surfactants represent 1-5% of the AFFF composition, which impart properties such as high spreadability, negligible fuel diffusion, and thermal stability to the foam. FC's are oxidatively recalcitrant, persistent in the environment, and have been detected in groundwater at AFFF training sites. Ultrasonic irradiation of aqueous
