[The importance of a transcultural clinical approach in the context of traumatic migration].

The transcultural dimension must necessarily be taken into account in the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders, as shown by the case of a young immigrant woman whose request for clinical care is motivated by an anxiety-depressive state that she explains by difficulties in adapting to a poorly mastered cultural disparity. This situation reveals that her difficulties are the expression of acculturation and post-traumatic stress inherent in war trauma.

Eating disorders in Latino boys and young men: the role of sociocultural context in identification, assessment, and treatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Existing research on eating disorders has predominantly centered on affluent, young White cisgender women, limiting providers' understanding of how sociocultural context influences the identification, assessment, and treatment of eating disorders among racial and ethnic minorities. Latino boys and young men remain a particularly understudied group in eating disorder studies, despite growing recognition of the prevalence of eating disorders within Latino populations. This review integrates a synthesis of current literature, epidemiological data, and multidisciplinary perspect

Prevalence and treatment of eating disorders among Hispanics/Latino Americans in the United States.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We reviewed the recent literature on prevalence rates, and application of evidence-based treatments for eating disorders among Hispanics/Latinos residing in the United States. RECENT FINDINGS: Lifetime prevalence rates of anorexia nervosa are lower among Hispanic/Latinos than non-Hispanic Whites. There are comparable rates of bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder (BED) among Hispanic/Latinos and non-Hispanic Whites. BED is the most common eating disorder among Hispanic/Latinos. Evidence-based treatments have begun to be implemented with Hispanics/Latinos. The core conce

Ataques de nervios: culturally bound and distinct from panic attacks?

BACKGROUND: The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders [DSM-IV-TR; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2000) has emphasized the importance of understanding psychopathology within a cultural framework by including culture-bound syndromes within its appendices. These syndromes are proposed to be bound to certain cultures and distinct from other psychological disorders. Included among the syndromes are ataques de nervios (ADN), which are reported to be bound to the Hispanic culture and closely resemble panic attacks. However, the cultural distinctiveness and phenomenology of AD

Spanking of young children: do immigrant and U.S.-born Hispanic parents differ?

Building on prior research showing fewer parenting risk behaviors and lower levels of harsh punishment among less acculturated Hispanic parents, we tested the hypothesis that foreign-born (FB; immigrant) Hispanic parents use less spanking toward children at 3 years and 5 years of age than U.S.-born Hispanic parents. We also examined whether other indicators of acculturation-endorsement of traditional gender norms and religiosity-showed any direct or indirect effects in explaining the hypothesized association. Path model analyses were conducted with a sample of Hispanic mothers (n = 1,089) and

Living Alone Among Older Adults in Canada and the U.S.

Increasing proportions of people, including older adults, live alone. Studying living arrangements of the elderly is important because these affect and reflect general well-being of the elderly and inform communities' response to elderly housing needs. We analyze data from the 2006 Canadian Census and the 2006 American Community Survey to examine living alone among non-married older adults aged 55 and older in Canada and the U.S. The paper has two parts. First, we compare native- and foreign-born elderly to see if immigrants are less likely to live alone. Second, we examine factors associated

Alcohol use/abuse and help-seeking among U.S. adults: The role of racial-ethnic origin and foreign-born status.

We used data from Wave 1 and Wave 2 of the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions to examine racial-ethnic and nativity-based variations in alcohol use/abuse and treatment seeking while accounting for acculturation, stress, and social integration factors. The dependent variables included alcohol use, risky drinking, DSM-IV alcohol use disorder, and treatment seeking in the past 12 months. Racial-ethnic categories included African, European, Asian/Pacific Islander, Mexican, Puerto Rican, and other Hispanic/Latino. Acculturation, social stress, and social integration w

Sexually transmitted infection prevalence and behavioral risk factors among Latino and non-Latino patients attending the Baltimore City STD clinics.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have evaluated factors influencing sexually transmitted diseases (STD)/HIV disparities between black and white populations, but fewer have explicitly included Latinos for comparison. METHODS: We analyzed demographic and behavioral data captured in electronic medical records of patients first seen by a clinician in 1 of 2 Baltimore City public STD clinics between 2004 and 2007. Records from white, black, and Latino patients were included in the analysis. RESULTS: There were significant differences between Latinos and other racial/ethnic groups for several behavioral r

Evaluation of the psychometric properties of the Oral Health Behavior Social Support (OHBSS) Scales in English and Spanish for Mexican-origin young adults.

BACKGROUND: Valid, reliable measures of psychosocial constructs are needed in oral health research. This study quantitatively evaluated the psychometric properties of nine new Oral Health Behavior Social Support (OHBSS) scales, which measured support for three oral health behaviors (brushing, flossing, dental care), queried for each of three sources (family, health providers, others/friends). METHODS: Young Mexican-origin adults in the southwestern United States-Mexico border region completed an online survey, in English or Spanish (N = 502). Survey items included: OHBSS scales, general socia

Socioeconomic status and bone health in community-dwelling older men: the CHAMP Study.

SUMMARY: The association between socioeconomic status (SES) and bone health, specifically in men, is unclear. Based upon data from the large prospective Concord Health in Ageing Men Project (CHAMP) Study of community-dwelling men aged 70 years or over, we found that specific sub-characteristics of SES, namely, marital status, living circumstances, and acculturation, reflected bone health in older Australian men. INTRODUCTION: Previous studies reported conflicting results regarding the relationship between SES and bone health, specifically in men. The main objective of this study was to invest

Accent-based discrimination in the Venezuelans resettled in Colombia.

Little is known about accent-based discrimination among countries that share the same language. The present study was designed to identify the sociodemographic characteristics related to the perception of accent-based discrimination among Venezuelan migrants in Colombia and how negative context of reception, pressure to acculturate, crisis migration, depressive symptoms, and anxiety are related to this kind of discrimination. The study employed a convergent parallel mixed methods design. With information from 999 Venezuelans (430 adolescents and 569 adults), we conducted a logistic regression

The Effect of Stigma and Social Networks on Role Expectations among African Immigrants Living with HIV.

This paper examines how African immigrants living with HIV negotiate and reconstruct their productive (i.e., educational and career opportunities), sexual, and reproductive identities. We used data from a mixed-methods study to explore how stigma and social networks in which participants were embedded shaped how they understood and negotiated their role expectations and responsibilities. Participants revealed how HIV not only changed their identities and limited their sex life, partner choices, and fundamental decisions about fertility and reproduction, but also presented them with the opportu

Stress and premenstrual symptoms among Korean women studying in the U.S. and South Korea: A longitudinal web-based study.

Premenstrual symptoms have been reported to be highly correlated with levels of perceived stress; however, the magnitude of the relationship remains unclear. The purpose of the study was to identify the relationships among perceived stress, acculturative stress, and premenstrual symptoms. The study used a 10-week longitudinal web-based design. A total of 98 female Korean international students studying in the U.S. and 89 Korean domestic students studying in South Korea were recruited using convenience sampling. Data collection was conducted between November 2014 and February 2015. The particip

The associations between subdimensions of religiosity and illicit substance use among latino sexual minority men.

BACKGROUND: Latino sexual minority men (SMM) may be a group disproportionately at risk for substance use than heterosexual Latino men and non-Latino SMM. As religiosity may be a culturally relevant factor, the current study aimed to explore the association of three subcomponents of religiosity: organizational religious activity (ORA; i.e., public religious activity), non-organizational religious activity (NORA; i.e., private religious activity), and intrinsic religiosity (IR; i.e., personal commitment to one's religion) in predicting illicit substance use. METHOD: Participants were 151 Latino

Predictors of Breast Cancer Worry in a Hispanic and Predominantly Immigrant Mammography Screening Population.

OBJECTIVE: Worry about developing breast cancer (BC) has been associated with participation in screening and genetic testing and with follow-up of abnormal screening results. Little is known about the scope and predictors of BC worry in Hispanic and immigrant populations. METHODS: We collected in-person interview data from 250 self-identified Hispanic women recruited from an urban mammography facility (average age 50.4 years; 82% foreign-born). Women reported whether they worried about developing breast cancer rarely/never (low worry), sometimes (moderate worry), or often/all the time (high w

Understanding Generational Differences in Muslim American Mental Health Help-Seeking.

Attitudes toward mental health help-seeking are shaped by a complex interplay of environmental, sociocultural, religious, and generational factors. Within Muslim communities, these attitudes are further informed by religious teachings, cultural norms, and intergenerational dynamics. This study explores the disparities in mental health-seeking behavior between first- and second-generation Muslim Americans. The sample consisted of 37 participants, including 16 first-generation immigrants (foreign-born) and 21 second-generation individuals born in the USA to at least one immigrant parent. The stu
