An 81-year-old female patient suffering from disabling Holmes' tremor affecting both upper extremities, the head and additionally the vocal apparatus underwent bilateral thalamic ventralis intermedius nucleus (v.i.m.) stimulation. With the stimulation ON, the patient experienced complete suppression of the limb and head tremor and thorough voice normalization. Acoustic and electroglottographic (EGG) analysis showed a tendency towards hyperfunctional phonation with the stimulation ON as well as OFF, but a less disturbed vocal cord vibration pattern with the stimulation ON in comparison with a g

(1) Background: Tinnitus involves the conscious awareness of a tonal or composite noise for which there is no identifiable corresponding external acoustic source. For many people, tinnitus is a disorder associated with symptoms of emotional distress, cognitive dysfunction, autonomic arousal, behavioural changes, and functional disability. Many symptoms can be addressed effectively using education or cognitive behavioural therapy. However, there is no treatment that effectively reduces or alters tinnitus-related neurophysiological activity and thus the tinnitus percept. In this systematic revie

We studied efficacy of electrical stimulation of soft palate muscles in 180 patients (292 ears) with various stages of exudative otitis media (EOM). The analysis of the results covered 172 patients. 8 patients withdraw because of the 4th (fibrous) stage of the process (n=4) and incomplete treatment course (n=4). Normalization of audibility thresholds and tympanometric parameters was observed after 10 sessions of electrostimulation in 129 (75.0%) patients with early EOM stages. The effect persisted for 1 year. 3 (1.7%) patients with EOM stage II and 40 (23.3%) patients with stage III failed the

The pathology of the organ of Corti in guinea pigs is studied by means of SEM and TEM. It was the purpose of this study to examine the surface of an experimentally altered organ of Corti by means of SEM screening method). As it was our main interest to find out the localization of acoustic stimulation regarding the tonotopicity on the surface of the organ of Corti, we always examined the whole cochlear by means of SEM first. In acoustic experiments we used long-time pure-tone stimulation beyond the directly damaging sound pressure level, as well as white noise or shots for experimental damage

BACKGROUND: Repeated efforts by researchers to impose voice changes by laryngeal surface electrical stimulation (SES) have come to no avail. This present pre-experimental study employed a novel method for SES application so as to evoke the motor potential of the internal superior laryngeal nerve (ISLN) and create voice changes.
METHODS: Thirty-two normal individuals (22 females and 10 males) participated in this study. The subjects were selected from the students of Iran University of Medical Sciences in 2014. Two monopolar active electrodes were placed on the thyrohyoid space at the location

PURPOSE: Subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) effectively alleviates motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease (PD), yet its impact on speech and voice remains inconsistent. This study examined acoustic parameters, perceptual features, and speech intelligibility using a large, methodologically standardized cohort. METHODS: A total of 105 PD patients (55 females, 50 males; mean age ≈ 57 years) undergoing STN-DBS were evaluated. All received posterolateral electrode placement, bilateral stimulation, and a postoperative 30–35% reduction in levodopa. Acoustic measures fundamental frequ

The startle reflex is elicited by intense tactile, acoustic or vestibular stimuli. Fast mechanoreceptors in each modality can respond to skin or head displacement. In each modality, stimulation of cranial nerves or primary sensory nuclei evokes startle-like responses. The most sensitive sites in rats are found in the ventral spinal trigeminal pathway, corresponding to inputs from the dorsal face. Cross-modal summation is stronger than intramodal temporal summation, suggesting that the convergence of acoustic, vestibular and tactile information is important for eliciting startle. This summation

This study was designed to monitor acoustic reflexes during the type of stimulation used in the auditory brainstem measures. Twenty normal female subjects within the age range 20 to 26 years participated in the study. The probe tone frequency was 226 Hz and the intensity was 85 dB SPL. Approximately 1000 clicks were presented to the right ear through an insert earphone and acoustic reflexes were monitored in the left ear. The clicks were presented at 95 and 105 dB peSPL and at 50 and 100/sec rates. At the rate of 50/sec, the acoustic reflex was present in 70% of the subjects at 95 dB peSPL and

The rapid and nondestructive detachment of cells from culture surfaces is critical for obtaining high-quality cell populations in tissue engineering applications. Thermoresponsive coatings, such as poly-(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), enable enzyme-free cell release; however, their practical utility is often constrained by inherently slow detachment kinetics. Here, we report a hybrid strategy that synergistically integrates surface acoustic wave (SAW) stimulation with a PNIPAM-based coating to markedly accelerate cell detachment. Under optimized conditions, this system achieves a cell detach

Patients with bilateral total deafness due to lesions of the vestibulocochlear nerve can be treated by electrical stimulation of the second auditory neuron. A 22-channel multi-electrode implant with transcutaneous transmission was developed that allows the selection of the most useful electrodes. Acoustic neuromas were removed from 49 out of 58 patients by ENT surgeons and neurosurgeons working in collaboration and using either a translabyrinthine or suboccipital approach. The central electroauditory prosthesis was implanted in the same procedure. Six patients were deaf after previous acoustic

Following surgical implantation of a cochlear implant, the external processor must be programmed individually, which is typically achieved by behavioral measurements, with the user indicating the perceived loudness between the threshold and the maximum comfort levels (MCLs). However, the stapedius reflex measurement could be used instead, as the basis for programming the fitting maps. The electrically evoked stapedius reflex threshold is known to have a high correlation with the MCLs and thus is used as an objective tool to determine the MCL, especially in children and non-cooperative patients

In both mammals and birds, the mechanical behavior of the middle ear structures is affected by the mechanical impedance of the inner ear. In this study, the aim was to quantify the acoustic impedance of the avian inner ear in the ostrich, which allows us to determine the effect on columellar vibrations and middle ear power flow in future studies. To determine the inner ear impedance, vibrations of the columella were measured for both the quasi-static and acoustic stimulus frequencies. In the frequency range of 0.3-4 kHz, we used electromagnetic stimulation of the ossicle and a laser Doppler vi

Stimulation with a short tone pip elicits an acoustic nerve compound action potential (I) and different waves (II--VII) in the inital 10 ms. Seven waves have been studied in 40 control subjects and five waves in 12 patients with vertebral-basilar insufficiency. Abnormalities of the different waves were observed at levels such as cochlea and/or acoustic nerve, medulla, caudal pons, rostral pons, and midbrain. The recording of early auditory evoked potentials (EAEP) is a noninvasive method of confirming impairment of the auditory pathway caused by a reduced vascular supply of vertebral and basil

Both symptomatic and genetic, cases with hyperekplexia or startle seizures induced by acoustic stimuli, are previously reported. By contrast, startle response induced by visual stimuli is rare. While visual stimuli are more commonly associated with startle seizures, here we present an 11-year-old girl with epilepsy, motor-mental retardation, and spastic tetraparesis, who had repetitive startle responses by photic stimulation during the electroencephalogram recording, without any spike-and-wave discharges associated with the startles. We report this unique case with startle responses induced bo

It is reported on the dynamic range of acoustic reflex in the case of normal hearing. Stimulation is carried out with speech noise under free field conditions. The sensitivity of impedance measurement is increased by using an averager, which enables acoustic reflex measurements at sound pressure levels of about 70 dB. Further an exact evaluation of input-output-characteristics becomes possible by this procedure. Basing on this consideration the possibility of objective hearing aid evaluation is discussed. The fundamental point of this technique should be the compensation of pathological input-

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine how odor processing is altered in patients with unilateral supratentorial brain tumors.
METHODS: Olfactory event-related potentials (OERPs) were evaluated in 10 patients with unilateral brain tumors of the frontal or temporal lobe in response to linalool and allylcaproate. Both odors were presented monorhinally by a constant-flow olfactometer. In addition, 20 healthy subjects were examined. While sniffing, the subjects were asked to discriminate the two odors. EEG was recorded from 7 electrode positions (Fz, Cz, Pz, F3/4, P3/4). Amplitudes and

Cochrane reviews indicate there is very limited support for all forms of sound therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy has the strongest support. American Academy of Otolaryngology (AAO) recently published some guidelines which recommends Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for tinnitus intervention, and only indicates that sound therapy should be considered an "option" for intervention. Nevertheless, acoustic therapy could lead to cause changes in the tinnitus perception and has been appreciated by the affected people for years. In the last decades, the use of sound or sound enrichment has be

The suppression tuning of distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) is commonly assumed to measure frequency selectivity, because the dominant features of suppression-tuning curves (STCs) are similar to the principal properties of the neural-tuning curves (NTCs) of single auditory-nerve fibers. In the present study, several common loop diuretics were used to affect the DPOAE-generation process to determine if reversible ototoxicity could adversely modify the characteristics of STCs, in a manner similar to that shown previously for NTCs. Contour plots of DPOAE level in the presence of a

INTRODUCTION: The stapedius nerve is one of the branches of the facial nerve in the temporal bone. It supplies the stapedius muscle, which is responsible for the attenuation reflex that protects the inner ear from loud noises. The stapedius (acoustic) reflex (SR) test is useful in identifying the site of facial nerve injury. The return of the SR (acoustic) to normal after an injury is a good prognostic factor in the treatment of facial nerve palsy.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of FNP on the SR (acoustic) response and determine the acoustic reflex threshold (ART)
