EEG Theta Dynamics within Frontal and Parietal Cortices for Error Processing during Reaching Movements in a Prism Adaptation Study Altering Visuo-Motor Predictive Planning.

Modulation of frontal midline theta (fmθ) is observed during error commission, but little is known about the role of theta oscillations in correcting motor behaviours. We investigate EEG activity of healthy partipants executing a reaching task under variable degrees of prism-induced visuo-motor distortion and visual occlusion of the initial arm trajectory. This task introduces directional errors of different magnitudes. The discrepancy between predicted and actual movement directions (i.e. the error), at the time when visual feedback (hand appearance) became available, elicits a signal that tr

Training complexity is not decisive factor for improving adaptation to visual sensory conflict.

Ground-based preflight training utilizing unusual visual stimuli is useful for decreasing the susceptibility to space motion sickness (SMS). The effectiveness of the sensorimotor adaptation training is affected by the training tasks, but what kind of task is more effective remains unknown. Whether the complexity is the decisive factor to consider for designing the training and if other factors are more important need to be analyzed. The results from the analysis can help to optimize the preflight training tasks for astronauts. Twenty right-handed subjects were asked to draw the right path of 4

The pupil.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To give an overview on topics of pupillary function selected according to their relevance in clinical neurology. Mainly publications of the last 3 years have been considered. RECENT FINDINGS: The discovery of photosensitive retinal ganglion cells not serving vision, but serving circadian rhythm and the pupil initiated many studies. There is evidence that pupil reaction to light might be preserved even if all rods and cones are lost. Spontaneous pupillary contractions in darkness occur in sleepy subjects and have been used to quantify the state of alertness. Apraclonidine ey

Is the spectacle lens jack-in-the-box phenomenon really due to the lenses?

The calculation of the extent of the ring scotoma around positive lenses, as conventionally taught to students of clinical optics, indicates that the scotoma is of a significant size. Using knife-edge lenses this study shows that the calculations are invalid due to the finite size of the eye's entrance pupil and in many instances the scotoma is shown not to exist. The effect noticed in clinical practice is probably largely due to the frame and the edging techniques used which add to the refractive scotoma which is present with high powered lenses, large apertures and/or small pupil sizes.

Dark adaptation and the retinoid cycle of vision.

Following exposure of our eye to very intense illumination, we experience a greatly elevated visual threshold, that takes tens of minutes to return completely to normal. The slowness of this phenomenon of "dark adaptation" has been studied for many decades, yet is still not fully understood. Here we review the biochemical and physical processes involved in eliminating the products of light absorption from the photoreceptor outer segment, in recycling the released retinoid to its original isomeric form as 11-cis retinal, and in regenerating the visual pigment rhodopsin. Then we analyse the time

"Torso rotation" experiments; 1: Adaptation to motion sickness does not correlate with changes in VOR gain.

Following a 30-minute exposure to an unusual motor strategy called "Torso Rotation" (TR), the signs and symptoms of motion sickness appear along with perceptual illusions during movement, gaze and postural instability, and a significantly reduced vestibulo-ocular response (VOR) gain. With repeated exposure to TR, the motion sickness disappears and gaze instability seems to be reduced. Is this apparent improvement in gaze stability associated with a reduction of the transient change in VOR gain? Motion sickness (subjective questionnaire) and VOR gain (passive step rotations in darkness) were me

Surgical therapy for obesity can induce a vitamin A deficiency syndrome.

New possible causes and unexplored aspects of the electroretinogram were evaluated in a case of vitamin A deficiency secondary to surgical therapy for morbid obesity. The Naka-Rushton equation, applied to the scotopic b-wave, demonstrated the quantal catch reduction caused by the loss of rhodopsin in the outer segment of photoreceptors. Study of the Fourier analysis of the photopic 20-Hz response suggested a primary involvement of the external retinal layers, with an indirect alteration of the inner layer. The electroretinogram oscillatory potentials showed alterations explained by the involve

Asthenopia and the dark focus of accommodation.

To study asthenopia, we compared the dark focus of accommodation of 54 symptomatic and 56 asymptomatic control subjects. The two groups were matched for age and cycloplegic refractive error. Symptomatic subjects were defined as those who complained of asthenopia daily even though their refractive error had been corrected. Subjects with other eye diseases that could produce asthenopia such as strabismus or aniseikonia were excluded. Using a Nidek Autorefractometer AR1600, we first measured non-cycloplegic refractive error (Non-Cyclo R) in a bright room, then the dark refractive state (Dark R) i

[The absolute light sensitivity of the visual analyzer in sailors during a 10-month commercial voyage].

For the purpose of studying the influence of extreme conditions of a long-term voyage on the functional state of the visual analyser, light sensitivity was studied in 21 seamen. It is shown that adaptation mechanisms regulating light sensitivity have a phase tendency: phase is characterized by a rise of the level of light sensitivity within first 90-120 days of the voyage; phase II--by a gradual fall of the level of light sensitivity beginning from 120-140 days of the long-term voyage. The investigations performed allow to create an informative diagnostic test for a well-grounded therapy inten

The eye of the venomous marine teleost Trachinus vipera with special reference to the structure and ultrastructure of visual cells and pigment epithelium.

The benthic Trachinus vipera occurs to a depth of 50 m and migrates inshore during the summer. It lies buried in the sand with the top of its head exposed. The benthic habitat and predatory behaviour, tuned to function in twilight, are reflected in the structure and ultrastructure of the eye. The eye is well camouflaged by an iridescent cornea and a differentially coloured spectacle. The spontaneous eye movements are either coordinated, for binocularity, or independent, for monocular vision. The latter is aided by the reduction of the blind spot to a thin streak. Consequently the optic nerve i

[Ocular tuberculosis].

Despite extensive investigations, including the use of Interferon-gamma release assays (IGRA), the diagnosis of intraocular tuberculosis (TB) remains challenging. Ocular evidence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in low endemic countries for TB is extremely rare, leading mostly to a TB-related ocular inflammation presumptive diagnosis. This present work aims: to highlights the main clinical patterns suggestive of ocular TB; and the latest recommended guidelines for diagnosing ocular TB to clarify interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) contribution and accuracy to the management of intraocular TB an

Secondary reconstruction of post-traumatic orbital wall defects using 3D techniques in patients with ocular globe loss: Report of two cases.

INTRODUCTION: Orbital wall fractures can result in significant functional and aesthetic sequelae, requiring accurate surgical reconstruction to restore orbital anatomy and volume. Recent advances in Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) and 3D printing technologies have enhanced the precision of orbital reconstruction, particularly in complex secondary cases where anatomical landmarks are distorted by trauma or previous surgery. In patients with ocular globe loss, reconstruction primarily aims to restore orbital symmetry, optimize prosthetic rehabilitation, and improve facial aesth

Climate Change and the Impact on Ocular Infectious Diseases: A Narrative Review.

Climate change and global warming significantly affect the incidence and distribution of infectious ocular diseases. This narrative review explores how climate-related factors-including extreme weather events, precipitation, temperature fluctuations, humidity, wind patterns, ultraviolet radiation, and air pollution-can directly and indirectly influence the burden of ocular infections. By synthesizing evidence from the published literature, we examine how these environmental variables impact disease mechanisms such as pathogen survival, transmission dynamics, and host susceptibility. Increased

Attention enhances short-term monocular deprivation effect.

Patching one eye of an adult human for a few hours has been found to promote the dominance of the patched eye, which is called short-term monocular deprivation effect. Interestingly, recent work has reported that prolonged eye-specific attention can also cause a shift of ocular dominance toward the unattended eye though visual inputs during adaptation are balanced across the eyes. Considering that patching blocks all input information from one eye, attention is presumably deployed to the opposite eye. Therefore, the short-term monocular deprivation effect might be, in part, mediated by eye-spe

A model-based study of internuclear ophthalmoparesis and ocular-motor fatigue in multiple sclerosis.

Internuclear ophthalmoparesis (INO) in multiple sclerosis (MS) is due to demyelination of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF). INO is typically modeled as an increased peak-velocity and peak-acceleration ratio of abducting to adducting eye (pulse-size ratio, PSR). PSR can be affected by fatigue during prolonged ocular-motor tasks (ocular-motor fatigue). We propose that an important component of horizontal disconjugacy in INO is due to a delayed delivery of the saccadic pulse to the adducting eye (pulse-time delay, PTD). We expanded a control-system model to account for both abnormal PSR a

Difficulties adapting to Nail-Patella syndrome: A qualitative study of patients' perspectives.

Nail-Patella syndrome (NPS) is a genetic disorder generating physical malformations and, in approximately one in three cases, ocular and renal damage. The present research aimed to deeply understand patients' subjective experience with NPS, particularly the aspects of the syndrome that affect patients' adaptation and to propose interventions that can improve genetic and psychological counseling and help patients cope with their condition. Semi-structured interviews of nine people diagnosed with NPS were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Results highlighted attempts to lo

Ocular aspects of myasthenia gravis.

Ocular myasthenia gravis is a not uncommon autoimmune disorder causing diplopia, ptosis, and weakness of lid closure. The predilection of myasthenia for the ocular muscles may be related to differences between limb and extraocular muscles in either physiological function or antigenicity. Clinically, ocular myasthenia can mimic any form of pupil-sparing ocular motility disorder. Dynamic abnormalities of myasthenic eye movements may reflect the primary hallmarks of the disease, which are fatigability and variability in strength, or secondary adaptive effects by the central nervous system. Tests
