Association of β-Lactam-Sensitive Haemophilus influenzae Type B with Adenoid Biofilm Formation in Patients with Adenoidectomy Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Chronic adenoid infection by β-lactam-resistant Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) and biofilm formation contribute to adenoid hyperplasia. Middle ear disease consequently remains a critical issue in the pediatric population. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation of Hib biofilm formation with middle ear effusion with adenoid hyperplasia (MEE-AH) and with pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). METHODS: A total of 384 patients with adenoidectomy from January 2008 to December 2012 were recruited in this investigation. Thirty-two patients (14 female and 18 male;

mHealth-Supported Perioperative Care for Family Caregivers of Children Undergoing Tonsillectomy and/or Adenoidectomy (TONAPP): Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgery is common, but generates perioperative anxiety for caregivers and distress in children. Limited time for perioperative education and reliance on unverified online information can reduce family preparedness and increase stress. Few studies have evaluated co-designed mobile health (mHealth) apps to support and engage families in the perioperative ENT journey. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare caregiver anxiety between an mHealth app-supported care pathway and standard supportive and educational care alone in the perioperative ENT co

Impact of Combined Holmium:YAG Laser-Assisted Inferior Turbinate Reduction and Adenoidectomy on Pediatric Nasal Obstruction: A Prospective Study.

Pediatric nasal obstruction is most commonly caused by adenoid hypertrophy; however, inferior turbinate hypertrophy may contribute significantly to persistent nasal obstruction and may limit the effectiveness of adenoidectomy alone. This prospective comparative study evaluated the additional clinical value of Holmium:YAG (Ho:YAG) laser-assisted inferior turbinate reduction performed concurrently with adenoidectomy in children with nasal obstruction. Fifty-two children aged 6-12 years were enrolled between 2023 and 2025. Group 1 underwent adenoidectomy plus Ho:YAG turbinate reduction (n = 24),

Cine magnetic resonance imaging: evaluation of persistent airway obstruction after tonsil and adenoidectomy in children with Down syndrome.

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Although usually successful, not all obstructive sleep apnea is cured by removal of the tonsils and adenoids (T&A). This is particularly true in children with Down syndrome and craniofacial anomalies. This is because of the multiple levels of obstruction in their airways, with obstruction present not only at the level of the tonsils and adenoids but also from base of tongue obstruction, soft palate collapse, and hypopharyngeal collapse. The cine magnetic resonance image (MRI) is useful in evaluating the upper airway in those patients who have not achieved a normal polysom

[German S1 guideline: obstructive sleep apnea in the context of tonsil surgery with or without adenoidectomy in children-perioperative management].

Otolaryngologic surgery is one of the most frequent operative interventions performed in children. Tonsil surgery with or without adenoidectomy due to hyperplasia of the tonsils and adenoids with obstruction of the upper airways with or without tympanic ventilation disorder is the most common of these procedures. Children with a history of sleep apnoea (OSA) suffer from a significantly increased risk of perioperative respiratory complications. Cases of death and severe permanent neurologic damage have been reported due to apnoea and increased opioid sensitivity. The current guideline represent

Incidence of cure and residual obstructive sleep apnea in obese children after tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy stratified by age group.

OBJECTIVES: Current clinical guidelines by the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends adenotonsillectomy (T&A) as the first-line treatment for pediatric OSA. However, obese children experience a decreased incidence of cure from T&A compared to non-obese children, with obesity increasing risk of residual post-operative OSA by up to 3.7-fold. In addition to obesity, increased age has also been linked to more severe baseline OSA, among other factors. In this study, we examined how age effects the post-operative outcome in obese children with OSA. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was perf
