Exploratory Factor Analysis of the Adolescent Version of the General Behavior Inventory in Korean Youth.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the factor structure of the Adolescent version of the General Behavior Inventory (A-GBI) for Koreans. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 220 adolescents (age, 12-18 years) who completed the A-GBI through the Department of Psychiatry at Asan Medical Center, Seoul, Korea, from October 2011 to December 2018. Caregivers of the study participants completed the Parent version of the GBI (P-GBI) 10-item Mania Scale. The adolescents were evaluated based on the A-GBI, Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), and Revised-Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale (

Simvastatin therapy in adolescent mice attenuates HFD-induced depression-like behavior by reducing hippocampal neuroinflammation.

BACKGROUND: A high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity/hyperlipidemia is accompanied by hormonal and neurochemical changes that can be associated with depression. Emerging studies indicate that simvastatin (SMV, decreasing cholesterol levels) has therapeutic effects on neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases through hippocampal-dependent function. However, the studies on the HFD exposure in adolescent animals, which investigate the neuroprotective effects of SMV on the hippocampal morphology, serotonin (5-HT) system and inflammation, are limited. Hence, the aim of this study was to determine whe

BDNF-Val66Met variant and adolescent stress interact to promote susceptibility to anorexic behavior in mice.

There is an urgent need to identify therapeutic targets for anorexia nervosa (AN) because current medications do not impact eating behaviors that drive AN's high mortality rate. A major obstacle to developing new treatments is the lack of animal models that recapitulate the pattern of disease onset typically observed in human populations. Here we describe a translational mouse model to study interactions between genetic, psychological and biological risk factors that promote anorexic behavior. We combined several factors that are consistently associated with increased risk of AN-adolescent fem

Toward an understanding of the context of anal sex behavior in ethnic minority adolescent women.

Understanding the context of anal sex behavior among ethnic minority adolescent women has public health implications for behavioral sexual health promotion and risk reduction interventions. African-American (n = 94) and Mexican-American (n = 465) women (14-18 years of age) enrolled in a clinical trial completed semi-structured interviews to assess psychosocial and situational factors and relationships to sexual risk behavior, substance use, sexually transmitted infection/HIV acquisition, and violence. Bivariate analyses with comparisons by anal sex experiences identified differences by ethnici

Assessment and treatment of excessive straightening and destructive behavior in an adolescent diagnosed with autism.

Repetitive behaviors such as excessive straightening are commonly observed among individuals with autism. Attempts to prevent these behaviors may increase the likelihood of other problem behaviors. The present study was designed to assess and treat the excessive straightening and associated destructive behaviors of a 16-year-old boy who had been diagnosed with autism and moderate mental retardation. Following a series of functional analyses, an intervention that incorporated functional communication, extinction of destructive behavior, and blocking of repetitive straightening was demonstrated

On the association between sexual attraction and adolescent risk behavior involvement: Examining mediation and moderation.

On the basis of a large-scale survey of high-school youth, the authors compared adolescents reporting exclusively heterosexual, mostly heterosexual, bisexual, and predominately same-sex attraction based on high-risk involvement across a range of risk behaviors. Bisexual and same-sex attracted groups were characterized by heightened high-risk involvement relative to the other two groups. Mediation analysis was used to determine whether these group disparities were explained by a set of normative predictive factors spanning multiple life domains. Differences among a combined exclusively/mostly h

Self-esteem, emotional distress and sexual behavior among adolescent females: inter-relationships and temporal effects.

PURPOSE: The current analyses attempt to clarify the relationship between psychological factors and sexual behavior. We test a model examining relationships between sexual history (e.g., age at initiation, partner history) and self-esteem and emotional distress (e.g., depression, anxiety, stress, hostility) and their impact on future sexual risk behavior (e.g., unprotected sex, multiple sexual partners). METHODS: The current analyses included 155 sexually active adolescent females, aged 14-19 years, who participated in the first two waves of a longitudinal study of human immunodeficiency viru

Disordered eating behavior and adolescent social health: evidence of interpersonal disruption across time and relationships.

BACKGROUND: Disordered eating during adolescence is common and can interrupt daily participation in family, peer, and school life. However, prior studies typically treat social relationships as precursors to disordered eating rather than as health outcomes that may deteriorate once symptoms appear. PURPOSE: To test whether adolescents with disordered eating symptoms show poorer social health across multiple relational settings, and whether impairment is stronger for multi-symptom and more persistent symptoms and changes over time. METHODS: Data came from 11 868 adolescents in the Adolescent

Early adversity promotes adolescent avoidance behavior by enhancing prefrontal-amygdala communication through CRH+ glutamatergic neurons.

Early life adversity (ELA) has lasting impacts on emotion circuit function1. Exposure to early maltreatment, neglect, or household instability is associated with enduring alterations in threat evaluation and response, hallmarks of mood and anxiety disorders2-4. These alterations often emerge during adolescence and are characterized by excessive avoidance that limits engagement in rewarding experiences5,6. However, the neurodevelopmental mechanisms linking ELA to increased threat responses remain unclear. We identified a stress-sensitive medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC)-basolateral amygdala path

Integrating the family stress model within a longitudinal sibling-adoption study of adolescent externalizing behavior.

Using a sample of linked adopted children, adoptive and birth parents (N = 561), and biological siblings residing in the birth parent home (N = 191), we examined the role of genetics within family stress processes. We tested parental hostility (7 years) as a mediator of the associations between socioeconomic strain and rearing parent psychopathology (4 years) and adolescent externalizing behaviors (11 years) in adoptive and biological parent homes. Next, we examined parent social support (4 years) as a moderator of paths from socioeconomic strain and parent psychopathology to parental hostilit

Impact of tobacco smoke constituents on nicotine-seeking behavior in adolescent and adult male rats.

INTRODUCTION: Given the rapid increase in teen vaping over recent years it is critical to understand mechanisms underlying addiction and relapse to tobacco use at this age. To evaluate the role of non-nicotine constituents in cigarette smoke, our lab has previously established a model of intravenous self-administration of aqueous cigarette smoke extract (CSE). We now compare the sensitivity of male adolescent and adult rats who have self-administered CSE or nicotine to reinstatement with the pharmacological stressor, yohimbine, with and without cues. METHODS: Adolescents and adults, aged post

MeCP2 haplodeficiency and early-life stress interaction on anxiety-like behavior in adolescent female mice.

BACKGROUND: Early-life stress can leave persistent epigenetic marks that may modulate vulnerability to psychiatric conditions later in life, including anxiety, depression and stress-related disorders. These are complex disorders with both environmental and genetic influences contributing to their etiology. Methyl-CpG Binding Protein 2 (MeCP2) has been attributed a key role in the control of neuronal activity-dependent gene expression and is a master regulator of experience-dependent epigenetic programming. Moreover, mutations in the MECP2 gene are the primary cause of Rett syndrome and, to a l

Adolescent risk substance use behavior, posttraumatic stress, depression, and resilience: Innovative considerations for disaster recovery.

Natural and technological disasters cause long-term psychological trauma and increase substance use in adults. It is unclear whether these problems also occur in children and whether trauma influences long-term psychological outcomes due to developmental stages at the time of trauma. One community of interest is located in southeastern Louisiana, where, as children, many locals were exposed to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in 2010. We hypothesized individuals exposed to these disasters in early childhood would exhibit higher rates of anxiety, depression, and alc

Risky Sexual Behavior among Arrested Adolescent Males: The Role of Future Expectations and Impulse Control.

The current study evaluates two predictors of adolescent sexual risk-taking, specifically whether impulse control or future expectations predict condom use and casual sex. We examine whether risky sex occurs among youth who tend to act without thinking about the future, or instead, youth who report low future expectations. We consider these relations longitudinally among a sample of sexually active justice-involved adolescent males (N = 752, M age = 15.58) a group at heightened risk for sexual risk-taking. We found that optimistic expectations for the future predict a higher likelihood of enga

Deficient adolescent social behavior following early-life inflammation is ameliorated by augmentation of anandamide signaling.

Early-life inflammation has been shown to exert profound effects on brain development and behavior, including altered emotional behavior, stress responsivity and neurochemical/neuropeptide receptor expression and function. The current study extends this research by examining the impact of inflammation, triggered with the bacterial compound lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on postnatal day (P) 14, on social behavior during adolescence. We investigated the role that the endocannabinoid (eCB) system plays in sociability after early-life LPS. To test this, multiple cohorts of Sprague Dawley rats were inje
