[Barotraumatic cerebral air embolism following scuba diving].

The authors report a case of barotraumatic cerebral air embolism following scuba diving, in which air embolism was diagnosed by CT. This kind of disorder becomes more frequent with the greater popularity of scuba diving. A healthy 24-year old woman made a rapid ascent with breath hold after a scuba dive to 8 meters for 20 minutes. On surfacing, she felt chest pain radiating to the cervical region. Shortly thereafter, she developed visual obscuration and weakness in the right arm and leg. On admission, neurological examination revealed right hemiparesis with hemisensory disturbance. Visual acui

Airway protective mechanisms.

Cough and swallow are highly coordinated reflex behaviors whose common purpose is to protect the airway. The pharynx is the common tube for air and food/liquid movement from the mouth into the thorax, has been largely overlooked, and is potentially seen as just a passive space. The thyropharyngeus muscle responds to cough inducing stimuli to prepare a transient holding area for material that has been removed from the subglottic airway. The cricopharyngeus muscle participates with the larynx to ensure regulation of pressure when a bolus/air is moving from the upper airway through to the thorax

Exposure to Air Pollution inside Electric and Diesel-Powered Passenger Trains.

Diesel-powered trains are used worldwide for passenger transport. The present study aimed to assess air pollution concentrations in passenger cars from diesel and electric trains. Personal exposure monitoring (6-7 h per day) was carried out for 49 days on diesel and 22 days on electric trains. Diesel trains had higher concentrations of all the assessed air pollution components. Average increases (and fold differences) in passenger cars of diesel trains compared with electric trains were for ultrafine particles 212 000 particles/cm3 (35-fold), black carbon 8.3 μg/m3 (6-fold), NO x 316 μg/m3 (8-

The pharmacology of chymotrypsin administered by inhalation.

The ability of chymotrypsin to reach the limits of the bronchial tree has been studied in cats receiving the enzyme by inhalation as a very fine powder. For this purpose derivatives of chymotrypsin were used which had been labelled with a fluorescent molecule or with [(131)I]. Quantitative measurements of the absorption and distribution of inhaled chymotrypsin- [(131)I] revealed a rapid removal of radioactivity from the lungs over the first 24 hr. and corresponding excretion of labelled inorganic iodide in the urine. High levels of activity were not attained in the blood or thyroid. Subcutaneo

One-step 3D shrinking method to prepare robust and multifunctional flexible strain sensor with brain cortex-like wrinkled structured.

At the current stage of rapid development in flexible electronics technology, flexible strain sensors face the challenge of integrating multiple functions while maintaining high sensitivity, a wide strain response range, and stable sensing performance in complex and harsh environments. In response to this challenge, we propose a facile and transfer-free one-step 3D-shrinking approach inspired by the wrinkled structure of the brain cortex. This method involves spraying a uniform conductive layer onto a pre-inflated latex balloon and gradually releasing the air, which induces the formation of an

Tricompartment model of the lacrimal pump mechanism.

BACKGROUND: The role of the lacrimal sac in the lacrimal pump mechanism is controversial. METHODS: Movements of the lateral wall of the lacrimal sac with blinking were videotaped through an endoscope in eight patients after dacryocystorhinostomy. In addition, movements of an air bubble at the opening of the nasolacrimal duct with blinking were studied in three patients with an incompetent valve of Hasner. RESULTS: The superior half of the lateral wall of the lacrimal sac moved laterally with lid closure and medially with lid opening. The inferior half of the lateral wall of the lacrimal sac

Source location of air pollution and cardiac autonomic function: trajectory cluster analysis for exposure assessment.

Although many studies report that exposure to air pollution harms health, few have examined associations between pollution sources and health outcomes. We hypothesized that pollution originating in different locations has different associations with heart rate variability (HRV) among 497 men from the Normative Aging Study in Boston, Massachusetts. We identified the paths that air masses traveled ('back-trajectories') before arriving in Boston on the days the men were examined. Next, we classified these trajectories into six clusters. We examined whether the association of measured air pollutan

Aerosol exchange between pressure-equilibrium rooms induced by door motion and human movement.

It is now widely recognised that aerosol transport is major vector for transmission of diseases such as COVID-19, and quantification of aerosol transport in the built environment is critical to risk analysis and management. Understanding the effects of door motion and human movement on the dispersion of virus-laden aerosols under pressure-equilibrium conditions is of great significance to the evaluation of infection risks and development of mitigation strategies. This study uses novel numerical simulation techniques to quantify the impact of these motions upon aerosol transport and provides va

Unilateral upper lung-field pulmonary fibrosis radiologically consistent with pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis after thoracic surgery: Clinical and radiological courses with autopsy findings.

BACKGROUND: Pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis (PPFE) is a rare idiopathic interstitial pneumonia characterized by pleural and parenchymal involvements predominantly in the upper lobes. Unilateral upper-lung field pulmonary fibrosis (upper-PF) radiologically consistent with PPFE was recently reported in patients with a history of open thoracotomy and presented with impaired thoracic movements in the operated side with unknown mechanisms. This retrospective study aimed to elucidate the clinical and radiological courses and pathological findings of unilateral upper-PF. METHODS: All the consecutiv

Abnormal air righting behaviour in the spontaneously hypertensive rat model of ADHD.

The spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) is the most commonly used model of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), displaying the main symptoms of the disorder which are responsive to psychostimulant treatments. Research to date has focused on behavioural tests investigating functioning of the striatum or prefrontal cortex in these rats. However, there is now evidence that the superior colliculus, a structure associated with head and eye movements, may also be dysfunctional in ADHD. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether the SHR demonstrated impairment in collicu

Western Canada study of animal health effects associated with exposure to emissions from oil and natural gas field facilities. Study design and data collection III. Methods of assessing animal exposure to contaminants from the oil and gas industry.

Researchers measured exposure to oil and gas industry emissions in 205 cow-calf herds located in Western Canada. They measured airborne concentrations of sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and volatile organic compounds with passive monitors placed in each pasture, wintering, or calving area that contained study animals from the start of the breeding season in the spring of 2001 until June 30, 2002. Researchers continued air monitoring in a subset of herds to the end of the study in fall 2002. Each sampling device was exposed for 1 month and then shipped to the laboratory for analysis. New samp

Cohort study of the relationship between air pollution and short term health effects as determined by peak expiratory flow measurements.

The aim of the study was to establish if air pollution has short term effects on health and well-being for individuals living in an industrialized area of Norway. A cohort study was designed so that two groups (one randomly selected from the general population and one with preexisting lung disease) were followed hour by hour during two months in the winter and in the summer of 1988. In order to minimize the problems of confounding factors, each individual served as her/his own control. Each participant described through the use of a diary the presence of symptoms from the upper and lower respi

UV-B damages eyes of barnacle larvae and impairs their photoresponses and settlement success.

The impact of enhanced UV-B radiation on marine ecosystems due to ozone depletion has caused growing global concern. Barnacle larvae have evolved complex photoreceptors and elaborate phototactic behaviors, which enable them to identify suitable habitats for feeding and settlement. For the first time, we demonstrate that environmentally realistic levels of UV-B radiation can induce ocular damage in barnacle larvae, thereby impairing the phototactic behavior of naupliar larvae and reducing settlement success of cypris larvae. Significant disruptions of rhabdomeres (the photosensitive structures

The prediction of WBGT from the Botsball.

This study investigated the relationship between the Botsball (BB) and WBGT in varied environmental conditions. Two levels of radiant heat, two levels of air movement, three levels of relative humidity, and dry bulb temperatures ranging between 17.2 and 42.8 degrees C (63 and 109 degrees F) yielded 210 different environmental conditions. The results indicate that if good estimates of wind speed, humidity and radiant heat are available, BB can predict WBGT with +/-0.4 degrees C (90% confidence level). Only when there is limited knowledge of the type of environment does the predictability fall t

Temperate freshwater soundscapes: A cacophony of undescribed biological sounds now threatened by anthropogenic noise.

The soundscape composition of temperate freshwater habitats is poorly understood. Our goal was to document the occurrence of biological and anthropogenic sounds in freshwater habitats over a large (46,000 km2) area along the geographic corridors of five major river systems in North America (Connecticut, Kennebec, Merrimack, Presumpscot, and Saco). The underwater soundscape was sampled in 19 lakes, 17 ponds, 20 rivers and 20 streams, brooks and creeks that were grouped into broad categories (brook/creek, pond/lake, and river). Over 7,000 sounds were measured from 2,750 minutes of recording in 1

Climate drives the meningitis epidemics onset in west Africa.

BACKGROUND: Every year West African countries within the Sahelo-Sudanian band are afflicted with major meningococcal meningitis (MCM) disease outbreaks, which affect up to 200,000 people, mainly young children, in one of the world's poorest regions. The timing of the epidemic year, which starts in February and ends in late May, and the spatial distribution of disease cases throughout the "Meningitis Belt" strongly indicate a close linkage between the life cycle of the causative agent of MCM and climate variability. However, mechanisms responsible for the observed patterns are still not clearly

Effects of drafting during short-track speed skating.

Short-track speed skating involves pack-style racing where five to seven skaters may be on the ice at once. Since average speed for a 3000-m event may exceed 35 km.h-1, drafting may be beneficial. However, the short (111 m) oval track could limit effective drafting space, and high forces required in cornering may compromise potential benefits. We evaluated heart rate (HR)-lactate (LA) responses and post-drafting 3-lap sprint performance using 18 National Team and developmental skaters. Two 4-min trials, one drafting and one leading at 8.8 m.s-1, were performed. In addition, six skaters perform

Nonlinear effects in the dynamics of clouds of bubbles.

This paper presents a spectral analysis of the response of a fluid containing bubbles to the motions of a wall oscillating normal to itself. First, a Fourier analysis of the Rayleigh-Plesset equation is used to obtain an approximate solution for the nonlinear effects in the oscillation of a single bubble in an infinite fluid. This is used in the approximate solution of the oscillating wall problem, and the resulting expressions are evaluated numerically in order to examine the nonlinear effects. Harmonic generation results from the nonlinearity. It is observed that the bubble natural frequency

Energy cost of speec skating and efficiency of work against air resistance.

The energy expenditure during speed ice skating (PB=650 mmHg; T=-5 degrees C) was measured on 13 athletes (speed range: 4-12 m/s) from VO2 and (for speeds greater than 10 m/s) from blood lactic acid concentration. The energy spent (O2 equivalents) per unit body wt and unit distance (Etot/V, ml/kg-min) increases with the speed (v, m/s): Etot/v=0.049 + 0.44 X 10(-3) V2. At 10 m/s, Vtot/v amounts then to 0.093 ml/kg-m: about half the value of running. The constant 0.049 ml/kg-m is interpreted as the energy spent against gravitational and inertial forces. The term 0.44 X 10(-3) v2 indicates the en
