Leukemia and lymphoma incidence in children in Alberta, Canada: a population-based 22-year retrospective study.

There is a paucity of published literature on the epidemiology of childhood acute leukemias and lymphomas in Canada. This study was designed to describe children and youth (age <20 years) diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) in Alberta, Canada, during 22 fiscal years. The Alberta Cancer Registry was used to extract data all ALL, AML, HL, and NHL cases diagnosed between April 1, 1982, and March 31, 2004. Population data for Alberta were also obtained. Descriptive statistics and cluster detection te

Predictors of adherence to supervised and unsupervised exercise in the Alberta Physical Activity and Breast Cancer Prevention Trial.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the predictors of adherence separately for supervised and unsupervised exercise or in postmenopausal women over an extended time period. Here, we report the predictors of exercise adherence in the Alberta Physical Activity and Breast Cancer Prevention (ALPHA) Trial. METHODS: The ALPHA trial randomized 160 postmenopausal women in Calgary and Edmonton, Canada to an exercise intervention that consisted of an average of 200 min/wk of supervised (123 minutes) and unsupervised (77 minutes) exercise over a 1-year period. Baseline data were collected on demograph

Sulfate adsorption properties of acid-sensitive soils in the Athabasca oil sands region in Alberta, Canada.

The risk of soil acidification is high in the Athabasca oil sands region (AOSR) in Alberta, Canada, due to elevated SO(2) emission and the resultant acid deposition to sensitive, coarse-textured soils. Understanding the sulfate adsorption characteristics of soils sensitive to acidification will help establish critical loads of acid deposition in AOSR. Sulfate adsorption properties were evaluated and relationships between sulfate adsorption and soil properties were examined for soils in two contrasting watersheds (NE7 and SM8) in AOSR. The experimental data fitted well to both the Langmuir and

Stability of prevalence rates of anorectal malformations in the Alberta Congenital Anomalies Surveillance System 1990-2004.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Anorectal malformations appeared to be increasing in the province of Alberta, Canada. To assess whether this was a significant trend, with the possibility of these having a teratogenic origin, we examined the frequency of anorectal malformations over a 15-year period. METHODS: We examined the records of the Alberta Congenital Anomaly Surveillance System, which is a semiactive surveillance system using the British Paediatric Association and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health expansions of the International Classification of Diseases-Ninth Revision and the Int

MRSA transmission in hospitals across Alberta, Canada: a comparative study combining unidentified colonized cases upon admission.

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a prevalent bacterium in medical settings. It can result in bloodstream infections and other severe illnesses, and patients may have a high risk of dying from these conditions. This study aimed to examine MRSA transmission in hospitals across Alberta and how undetected colonized patients on admission affect MRSA spread. METHODS: We used a Bayesian compartmental model to simulate MRSA spread across 106 acute care hospitals in Alberta. The model assumes that MRSA spreads through interactions between susceptible individuals and MR

A cortically-weighted versus total Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score in thrombectomy outcome models.

OBJECTIVES: Individual subcortical infarct scoring for the Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score (ASPECTS) can be difficult and is subjected to higher inter-reader variability. This study compares performance of the 10-point ASPECTS with a new 7-point cortically-weighted score in predicting post-thrombectomy functional outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prospective registry data from two comprehensive stroke centers (Site 1 2016-2021; Site 2: 2019-2021) included patients with either M1 segment of middle cerebral artery or internal carotid artery occlusions who underwent thrombe

Quantifying Fluoridation Exposure Over Time in Alberta, Canada: Challenges and Implications for Dental Public Health Surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Community water fluoridation is one component of a multifactorial approach to preventing dental caries. Yet, fluoridation monitoring in Canada has historically been fragmented, and recent national estimates give little indication of trends at the provincial or municipal levels. We aimed to quantify fluoridation exposure trends in Alberta from 1950 to 2018 at both the population and municipal levels. Insights have implications for dental public health surveillance. METHODS: Drawing from various public sources, we compiled a list of all Alberta municipalities, noting type of municip

The Canadian Mother-Child Cohort Active Surveillance Initiative (CAMCCO): Comparisons between Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.

BACKGROUND: Given that pregnant women taking medications are excluded from clinical trials, real-world evidence is essential. We aimed to build a Canadian Mother-Child Cohort Active Surveillance Initiative (CAMCCO) and compare frequency of prematurity, low-birth-weight (LBW), major malformations, multiplicity, and gestational medication use across four provinces. METHODS: CAMCCO is a collaborative research infrastructure that uses real-world data from large provincial health care databases in Canada; developed with standardized methods to similarly construct population-based pregnancy/child c

Surveillance of mosquito-borne viruses in Alberta using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction with generic primers.

Mosquitoes collected during 2003, 2004, and 2005 in Alberta, Canada, were screened for the presence of a wide range of arboviruses by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Nucleic acid extracts from mosquito slurries were amplified using universal primers designed to detect viruses belonging to the Flavivirus genus of the Flaviviridae family and California and Bunyamwera serogroups of the Bunyavirus genus within the Bunyaviridae family. Species-specific detection of Western equine encephalitis virus and Eastern equine encephalitis virus was also performed. Amplified product

Region-specific interobserver agreement of the Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) is a widely used scoring system for evaluating ischemic stroke to determine therapeutic strategy. However, there is variation in the interobserver agreement of ASPECTS. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the interobserver agreement of total and regional ASPECTS. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in the Web of Sciences, PubMed, and Scopus databases to identify relevant studies. Inclusion criteria were studies of noncontrast CT performed within 24 hours of ischemic stroke in the mi

Whole-Genome Analysis of Streptococcus pneumoniae Serotype 4 Causing Outbreak of Invasive Pneumococcal Disease, Alberta, Canada.

After the introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines for children, invasive pneumococcal disease caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 4 declined in all ages in Alberta, Canada, but it has reemerged and spread in adults in Calgary, primarily among persons who are experiencing homelessness or who use illicit drugs. We conducted clinical and molecular analyses to examine the cases and isolates. Whole-genome sequencing analysis indicated relatively high genetic variability of serotype 4 isolates. Phylogenetic analysis identified 1 emergent sequence type (ST) 244 lineage primarily assoc

Antimicrobial resistance and resistance genes in Escherichia coli isolated from retail meat purchased in Alberta, Canada.

This study analyzed antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and resistance genes in generic Escherichia coli isolated from retail meat samples purchased (2007-2008) in Alberta, Canada, and determined potential associations between resistance phenotypes and resistance genes with relation to the meat types. A total of 422 E. coli isolates from retail chicken, turkey, beef, and pork meats were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility. Multiplex PCRs were used to detect major resistance genes for tetracyclines [tet(A), tet(B), tet(C)], sulfonamides (sul1, sul2, sul3), aminoglycosides (strA/B, aadA, aadB, aa

Geochemical interactions between process-affected water from oil sands tailings ponds and North Alberta surficial sediments.

In Northern Alberta, the placement of out-of-pit oil sands tailings ponds atop natural buried sand channels is becoming increasingly common. Preliminary modeling of such a site suggests that process-affected (PA) pond water will infiltrate through the underlying clay till aquitard, reaching the sand channel. However, the impact of seepage upon native sediments and groundwater resources is not known. The goal of this study is to investigate the role of adsorption and ion exchange reactions in the clay till and their effect on the attenuation or release of inorganic species. This was evaluated u

Botfly (Diptera:Oestridae) parasitism of Ord's kangaroo rats (Dipodomys ordii) at Suffield National Wildlife Area, Alberta, Canada.

During field study of Ord's kangaroo rat (Dipodomys ordii) at Suffield National Wildlife Area, Alberta, Canada, a high prevalence of parasitism by botfly (Diptera: Oestridae) larvae was observed. Botflies have not previously been documented as parasites of kangaroo rats. Botfly parasitism could have a significant impact on the growth, survival, and reproduction of Ord's kangaroo rat, which is considered a vulnerable species in Canada. Therefore, it is important to investigate how botfly parasitism varies with season and with gender or age of host. In 1995, 525 individual kangaroo rats were cau
