Machine learning algorithms to automate differentiating cardiac amyloidosis from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Cardiac amyloidosis has a poor prognosis, and high mortality and is often misdiagnosed as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, leading to delayed diagnosis. Machine learning combined with speckle tracking echocardiography was proposed to automate differentiating two conditions. A total of 74 patients with pathologically confirmed monoclonal immunoglobulin light chain cardiac amyloidosis and 64 patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy were enrolled from June 2015 to November 2018. Machine learning models utilizing traditional and advanced algorithms were established and determined the most significant

Recent advances in computational algorithms and software for large-scale glycoproteomics.

Glycoproteomics, or characterizing glycosylation events at a proteome scale, has seen rapid advances in methods for analyzing glycopeptides by tandem mass spectrometry in recent years. These advances have enabled acquisition of far more comprehensive and large-scale datasets, precipitating an urgent need for improved informatics methods to analyze the resulting data. A new generation of glycoproteomics search methods has recently emerged, using glycan fragmentation to split the identification of a glycopeptide into peptide and glycan components and solve each component separately. In this revi

Improved Alzheimer's Disease Detection by MRI Using Multimodal Machine Learning Algorithms.

Adult-onset dementia disorders represent a challenge for modern medicine. Alzheimer's disease (AD) represents the most diffused form of adult-onset dementias. For half a century, the diagnosis of AD was based on clinical and exclusion criteria, with an accuracy of 85%, which did not allow for a definitive diagnosis, which could only be confirmed by post-mortem evaluation. Machine learning research applied to Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) techniques can contribute to a faster diagnosis of AD and may contribute to predicting the evolution of the disease. It was also possible to predict indivi

A Comparative Analysis of Machine Learning Algorithms to Predict Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease has been one of the major concerns recently. Around 45 million people are suffering from this disease. Alzheimer's is a degenerative brain disease with an unspecified cause and pathogenesis which primarily affects older people. The main cause of Alzheimer's disease is Dementia, which progressively damages the brain cells. People lost their thinking ability, reading ability, and many more from this disease. A machine learning system can reduce this problem by predicting the disease. The main aim is to recognize Dementia among various patients. This paper represents the resul

New optimization algorithms for neural network training using operator splitting techniques.

In the following paper we present a new type of optimization algorithms adapted for neural network training. These algorithms are based upon sequential operator splitting technique for some associated dynamical systems. Furthermore, we investigate through numerical simulations the empirical rate of convergence of these iterative schemes toward a local minimum of the loss function, with some suitable choices of the underlying hyper-parameters. We validate the convergence of these optimizers using the results of the accuracy and of the loss function on the MNIST, MNIST-Fashion and CIFAR 10 class

Prediction of mortality following pediatric heart transplant using machine learning algorithms.

BACKGROUND: Optimizing transplant candidates' priority for donor organs depends on the accurate assessment of post-transplant outcomes. Due to the complexity of transplantation and the wide range of possible serious complications, recipient outcomes are difficult to predict accurately using conventional multivariable regression. Therefore, we evaluated the utility of 3 ML algorithms for predicting mortality after pediatric HTx. METHODS: We identified patients <18 years of age receiving HTx in 2006-2015 in the UNOS Registry database. Mortality within 1, 3, or 5 years was predicted using classi

Analysis-Synthesis Learning With Shared Features: Algorithms for Histology Image Classification.

OBJECTIVE: The diversity of tissue structure in histopathological images makes feature extraction for classification a challenging task. Dictionary learning within a sparse representation-based classification (SRC) framework has been shown to be successful for feature discovery. However, there exist stiff practical challenges: 1) computational complexity of SRC can be onerous in the decision stage since it involves solving a sparsity constrained optimization problem and often over a large number of image patches; and 2) images from distinct classes continue to share several geometric features.

[Periprosthetic fractures of the acetabulum and femur : Causes-classification-treatment algorithms].

BACKGROUND: Both increasing implantation numbers of total hip replacements and demographic change with higher populations of older people, indicate that there will be an increase in periprosthetic fractures in the future. CAUSES: Falls in the home environment are the most common cause. Significant co-factors include reduced patient coordination, reduced bone quality, or implant-associated factors such as local osteolysis or pre-existing implant loosening. CLASSIFICATION: In the classification of periprosthetic fractures of the femur, the Vancouver classification has prevailed in recent years

Finding a place for corifollitropin within the PIVET FSH dosing algorithms.

PIVET recombinant FSH (rFSH) dosing algorithms have been designed for rFSH injection pens, providing optimal pregnancy and live birth productivity rates whilst minimizing risk and occurrence of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Recently, long-acting recombinant gonadotrophin corifollitropin (Elonva) was approved for use in assisted reproduction, and welcomed by patients as the single injection allowed ovarian stimulation over 7 days without need for multiple injections. Consequently, another rFSH dosing algorithm was devised to incorporate Elonva, and these cycles were compared to stan

Evaluation of Three Algorithms for the Segmentation of Overlapping Cervical Cells.

In this paper, we introduce and evaluate the systems submitted to the first Overlapping Cervical Cytology Image Segmentation Challenge, held in conjunction with the IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging 2014. This challenge was organized to encourage the development and benchmarking of techniques capable of segmenting individual cells from overlapping cellular clumps in cervical cytology images, which is a prerequisite for the development of the next generation of computer-aided diagnosis systems for cervical cancer. In particular, these automated systems must detect and accuratel

Aid decision algorithms to estimate the risk in congenital heart surgery.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we have tested the suitability of using different artificial intelligence-based algorithms for decision support when classifying the risk of congenital heart surgery. In this sense, classification of those surgical risks provides enormous benefits as the a priori estimation of surgical outcomes depending on either the type of disease or the type of repair, and other elements that influence the final result. This preventive estimation may help to avoid future complications, or even death. METHODS: We have evaluated four machine learning algorithms to ac
