[Gene therapy in lysosomal diseases].

The study of the mechanisms of secretion and recapture of lysosomal enzymes has lead to the proposal of a treatment of lysosomal diseases by enzyme replacement. Autologous implants of genetically modified cells which secrete enzymes ensure systemic distribution of the lacking enzyme. A procedure which permits reimplantation of genetically modified fibroblasts is described. The stable secretion of human glucuronidase by autologous fibroblasts was thus obtained in animal species. This approach should by applicable to the treatment of Hurler's syndrome by obtaining the production and distribution

Morphological Characteristics of Retinal Ganglion Cells in the Retinas of Giant Pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca).

Vision plays a crucial role in the survival of animals, and the visual system has particularly selectively evolved in response to the visual environment, ecological niche, and species habitats in vertebrate species. To date, a horizontal streak of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) distribution pattern is observed across mammal species. Here, we report that the giant panda's vertically oriented visual streak, combined with current evidence of the animal's forward-placed eyes, ocular structure, and retinal neural topographic distribution patterns, presents the emergence of a well-adapted binocular vis

Epidemiology of Animal Rabies - China, 2010-2020.

INTRODUCTION: Rabies is a fatal zoonotic infectious disease that poses a serious threat to public health in China. Since 2005, a National Animal Rabies Surveillance System has been operating to understand the rabies situation in animals in China with a view to control and eventually eliminate dog-mediated human rabies. METHODS: From 2010, the brain tissues of dogs, livestock, and wild animals showing rabies-like clinical signs were collected and tested by the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for Animal Rabies to analyze the epidemiological characteristics of rabies, including animal specie

Rabies exposure in international travelers: do we miss the target?

BACKGROUND: Little data exist about the spatial distribution of the risk for travelers of being injured by a potentially rabid animal. METHODS: Over the last 14 years, animal-associated injuries in 424 international travelers presenting to a travel medicine clinic in Marseille, southern France, were investigated. RESULTS: The majority of cases were reported from North Africa (41.5%) and Asia (22.2%). Most countries where at-risk injuries occurred (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Thailand, and Turkey) were those for which travelers do not usually seek advice at a specialized travel clinic, because

Age dependence of dithiobiuret neurotoxicity in male and female rats.

Weanling, juvenile and adult rats both sexes were treated with 1 mg/kg/day [14C] dithiobiuret (DTB) until they developed skeletal muscle weakness as detected by failure in a rotarod test. The latent period before the onset of weakness was longest in weanling animals of both sexes. The greater resistance of the weanlings, to DTB intoxication, could not be explained by differences in the cumulative body burden or tissue distribution of DTB and its metabolites. The sex of the animal was not a determinant of DTB toxicity. Urine and feces were the major and minor routes, respectively, for eliminati

Examination of participant sex bias in international society of biomechanics conference abstract submissions: patterns across cohorts, countries, and contexts.

Sex bias in cohorts occurs when one sex is overrepresented. This study evaluated sex bias in study participant cohorts among abstracts accepted for the International Society of Biomechanics (ISB) Congress in 2025. Analyses focused on participant inclusion and abstract characteristics by lead author affiliated country, research topic, and cohort type (human/animal/computational). Using NotebookLM Gemini 1.5 Pro and a predefined prompt, data were extracted and analysed from 1,394 accepted abstracts. Of the 1202 abstracts with study participants, 43% did not report sex distribution, 13% had very

Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics of Avian Egg-Yolk Derived Pure Anti-Snake Venom in Healthy and Disease Animal-Model.

The absence of Fc receptor binding, cost-effective production potential in large quantities in pure form, and better storage stability of avian immunoglobulin (IgY) advocate its therapeutic use as anti-snake venom (ASV). This study develops pure anti-neurotoxin (ANT- IgY) by immunizing White Leghorn hens with Cobra and Krait venoms for demonstrating antigen-antibody binding in vitro/in vivo. The purified IgY from immunized egg-yolk showed immunoprecipitation in Ouchterlony's Double Diffusion (ODD) experiment. For characterizing ANT-IgY distribution and clearance pattern, the study utilized an

Cerebral inducible nitric oxide synthase protein expression in microglia, astrocytes and neurons in Trypanosoma brucei brucei-infected rats.

To study the anatomo-biochemical substrates of brain inflammatory processes, Wistar male rats were infected with Trypanosoma brucei brucei. With this reproducible animal model of human African trypanosomiasis, brain cells (astrocytes, microglial cells, neurons) expressing the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) enzyme were revealed. Immunohistochemistry was achieved for each control and infected animal through eight coronal brain sections taken along the caudorostral axis of the brain (brainstem, cerebellum, diencephalon and telencephalon). Specific markers of astrocytes (anti-glial fibrill

Systematic investigation of the Borrelia miyamotoi spirochetes in ticks, wildlife and domestic animal hosts in Yunnan province, Southwest China.

BACKGROUND: Borrelia miyamotoi is a spirochete species transmitted via hard ticks. Following its discovery in Japan, this pathogen has been detected around the world, and is increasingly confirmed as a human pathogen causing febrile disease, namely relapsing fever. Its presence has been confirmed in the Northeast China. However, there is little information regarding the presence of B. miyamotoi and other hard-tick-borne relapsing fever spirochetes in southern China including Yunnan province, where tick and animal species are abundant and many people both inhabit and visit for recreation. Pharmacokinetics of Meloxicam in Different Animal Species: A Comprehensive Review.

Meloxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory in the oxicam group. It has been extensively used in human and veterinary medicine for their anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic activities. Meloxicam has shown high therapeutic potential for disorders such as osteoarthritis, musculoskeletal disorder, acute respiratory infection, puerperal septicemia, mastitis and mastitis-metritis-agalactia syndrome. Although meloxicam pharmacokinetic has been described for numerous species, no paper summarizes the existing literature on this field. Thus, the aim of this review was to carry out a review

Detection of resistance and virulence plasmids in Campylobacter coli and Campylobacter jejuni isolated from North Carolina food animal production, 2018-2019.

Campylobacter remains the leading cause of bacterial foodborne illness in the U.S. and worldwide. Campylobacter plasmids may play a significant role in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and virulence factor distribution, and potentially drive rapid adaptation. C. coli (n = 345) and C. jejuni (n = 199) isolates collected from live cattle, swine, turkey, and chickens, poultry carcasses at production, and retail meat in N.C. were analyzed to determine plasmid prevalence, extrachromosomal virulence and AMR genes, and the phylogeny of assembled plasmids. Putative plasmids ranging from <2 kb to 237kb w

Environmental distribution of certain modified live-virus vaccines with a high safety profile presents a low-risk, high-reward to control zoonotic diseases.

Oral vaccines aid immunization of hard to reach animal populations but often contain live-attenuated viruses that pose risks of reversion to virulence or residual pathogenicity. Human risk assessment is crucial prior to vaccine field distribution but there is currently no standardized approach. We mapped exposure pathways by which distribution of oral vaccines may result in inoculation into people and applied a Markov chain to estimate the number of severe adverse events. We simulated three oral rabies vaccination (ORV) campaigns: (1) first generation ORV (SAD-B19) in foxes, (2) SAD-B19 in dog

Effective Suckling C57BL/6, Kunming, and BALB/c Mouse Models with Remarkable Neurological Manifestation for Zika Virus Infection.

Since 2015, 84 countries and territories reported evidence of vector-borne Zika Virus (ZIKV) transmission. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared that ZIKV and associated consequences especially the neurological autoimmune disorder Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and microcephaly will remain a significant enduring public health challenge requiring intense action. We apply a standardization of the multi-subcutaneous dorsal inoculation method to systematically summarize clinical neurological manifestation, viral distribution, and tissue damage during the progress of viremia and systemic spre

Ornithine decarboxylase in human brain: influence of aging, regional distribution, and Alzheimer's disease.

Although experimental animal data have implicated ornithine decarboxylase, a key regulatory enzyme of polyamine biosynthesis, in brain development and function, little information is available on this enzyme in normal or abnormal human brain. We examined the influence, in autopsied human brain, of postnatal development and aging, regional distribution, and Alzheimer's disease on the activity of ornithine decarboxylase. Consistent with animal data, human brain ornithine decarboxylase activity was highest in the perinatal period, declining sharply (by approximately 60%) during the first year of

Cardiac myosin isoenzyme shifts in non-insulin treated spontaneously diabetic rats.

We evaluated myocardial myosin isoform distribution in a group of diabetic BB/W rats from which insulin was withheld for varying periods in order to evaluate the time course and extent of myosin isoform shifts in these animals. Prior studies of myosin isoform distribution in diabetic rats have utilized chemically induced diabetic rats or insulin-treated BB/W rats. Following a stabilization period on insulin therapy, insulin was withheld for 9-28 days during which the animals received supplemental parenteral bicarbonate and Ringer's lactate. Infection of multiple T-cell subsets and changes in lymphocyte functions associated with Herpesvirus saimiri infection of owl monkeys.

We examined the association of Herpesvirus saimiri with lymphocyte subsets and the functional integrity and distribution of these populations in owl monkeys with chronic, disease-free infections, in uninoculated, control animals, and in one monkey with H. saimiri-induced lymphoma. The lymphocyte subpopulations examined included total T cells, T cells with receptors for the Fc portion of immunoglobulin G (the Tgamma cells), T cells lacking this receptor (the Tgamma(-) population), and non-T cells. These studies showed that in chronically infected monkeys, H. saimiri was found in both Tgamma and
