Ecological footprint of ionophores in livestock production: Environmental pathways and effects.

Ionophores, a class of animal antibiotics, are widely used in intensive livestock farming to enhance feed efficiency and control coccidiosis. These compounds, known for their ability to transport cations across biological membranes, are crucial in maintaining cellular homeostasis. However, their extensive use raises environmental and human health concerns. This manuscript offers a comprehensive review of ionophores in livestock production, highlighting their environmental impact and potential to contribute to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). It emphasizes the fate and transport of ionophores in

Risk of amputation under diuretics in patients with or at risk of lower extremity arterial disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Recently, increased risk of amputation under sodium glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors has been debated. Similar concerns have been raised with other "traditional" diuretics, more particularly in patients with or at risk of lower extremity arterial disease (LEAD). AIM: To collect all available data on any potential risk of amputation associated with diuretics in patients with or at risk of LEAD. Additionally, we looked for other limb-related events in these patients. METHODS: We searched in PubMed, Embase and Scopus databases up to February 2021 for references, using peripheral o

Effects of chito-oligosaccharide on piglet jejunal explants: an histological approach.

Antibiotics have been widely used in piglet diets to promote growth performance and reduce diarrhea incidence. However, the resistance of pathogens to antibiotics and the risk of residues of antibiotics in animal products induced a growing interest in the use of alternatives to in-feed antibiotics. Chito-oligosaccharide (COS), a natural alkaline polymer of glucosamine is currently being tested as a substitute for in-feed antibiotics. In weaned piglets, COS has positive effects on promoting growth, which may be related to its action on intestinal morphology, immune ability and beneficial microb

Stereotypy and spontaneous alternation in deer mice and its response to anti-adenosinergic intervention.

Repetitive behavioral phenotypes are a trait of several neuropsychiatric disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Such behaviors are typified by complex interactions between cognitive and neurobiological processes which most likely contribute to the suboptimal treatment responses often observed. To this end, exploration of the adenosinergic system may be useful, since adenosine-receptor modulation has previously shown promise to restore control over voluntary behavior and improve cognition in patients presenting with motor repetition. Here, we employed the deer mouse (Peromysc

Antioxidant capacity and peptidomic analysis of in vitro digested Camelina sativa L. Crantz and Cynara cardunculus co-products.

In recent decades, the food system has been faced with the significant problem of increasing food waste. Therefore, the feed industry, supported by scientific research, is attempting to valorise the use of discarded biomass as co-products for the livestock sector, in line with EU objectives. In parallel, the search for functional products that can ensure animal health and performances is a common fundamental goal for both animal husbandry and feeding. In this context, camelina cake (CAMC), cardoon cake (CC) and cardoon meal (CM), due valuable nutritional profile, represent prospective alternat

Investigation of possible alternate animal reservoir hosts of Opisthorchis viverrini.

Chronic opisthorchiasis caused by Opisthorchis viverrini (O. viverrini) adversely affects human health and is associated with a fatal bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma). Although cats and dogs are known animal reservoir hosts of opisthorchiasis, there is limited information about whether other fish-eating animals are fluke reservoirs. Wetlands along Chi River of Thailand have abundant intermediate host snails and fish for O. viverrini and diverse other animal species. This led to our investigation into whether other fish-eating animals can also become infected and be alternate reservoir hos

Use of soybean as an alternative protein source for welfare-orientated production of American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis).

Soybean meal based diets have been suggested to cause gastrointestinal issues in certain species when used as a protein alternative. Using a randomized design, we tested 1,728 alligators in one of 13 communal pens offered one of two diets (seven pens (n = 928) of soybean-based protein diets and six pens (n = 800) of animal-based protein diets) to determine if soybeans would negatively affect the growth, hide quality, behavior and health, when compared with an otherwise identical diet using animal-based protein. Both feeds were nearly identical in composition for protein and fat percentages and

Artificial Feeding of Hard Ticks Using Silicone Membranes.

Artificial tick feeding systems (ATFS) provide an ethical alternative to using experimental animals for feeding ticks. Silicone membrane-based systems enable controlled feeding of diverse Ixodid tick species and life stages while supporting the 3R principles to replace, reduce, and refine animal use. Here, we present a protocol for silicone membrane-based ATFS, outlining practical steps, essential components, and key troubleshooting considerations.

The 'precautionary principle' as a guide for future drug development.

During the last decade, the 'precautionary principle' health has gained importance. It is an approach to manage uncertain risks and to prevent any damage to the environment or human. A key element is to take action, even if some cause and effect relationships are not fully established scientifically. Although there are also critics of this principle, it is meanwhile, also increasingly implemented in medicine. An important subject is medicinal products of human or animal origin. Manifold official precaution-guided regulations have been stated to improve their safety, particularly to avoid any i

Preclinical Toxicity Screening of Sodium Dodecanoyloxybenzenesulfonate (LOBS) as a New Alternative Biocide Using In Vitro and In Vivo Models.

Sodium hypochlorite is a well-established biocide extensively used in both living and industrial environments; however, exposure to it or improper handling can harm the human body and the environment. Thus, safer alternatives to sodium hypochlorite are required. Therefore, the objective of this research was to assess the genotoxicity, cardiotoxicity, 2-week repeated-dose toxicity studies (oral, dermal), and acute irritation/corrosion of sodium dodecanoyloxybenzenesulfonate (LOBS), a new alternative biocide in various biological systems. LOBS did not show genotoxic or cardiotoxic effects in the

Snake antivenom: Challenges and alternate approaches.

Snake envenomation is still a serious threat to many countries in the world. The only mainstay treatment depends on the administration of animal derived immunoglobulin based antivenom. Significant limitations to these antivenoms are a challenge in the treatment of snake envenomation. Many alternate approaches have been explored to overcome the limitations of antivenom. Exploring alternate approaches like use of bioactive components from plant sources, use of peptide and small molecule inhibitors are some aspects taken towards improving the current limitations of antivenom therapy. However, all

Report on the international workshop on alternative methods for human and veterinary rabies vaccine testing: state of the science and planning the way forward.

Potency testing of most human and veterinary rabies vaccines requires vaccination of mice followed by a challenge test using an intracerebral injection of live rabies virus. NICEATM, ICCVAM, and their international partners organized a workshop to review the availability and validation status of alternative methods that might reduce, refine, or replace the use of animals for rabies vaccine potency testing, and to identify research and development efforts to further advance alternative methods. Workshop participants agreed that general anesthesia should be used for intracerebral virus injection

Autologous fat injection for vocal cord medialization in the canine larynx.

This study examined the use of autologous fat as an alternative to Teflon and collagen as the implantable material in vocal cord medialization. Five animals underwent left recurrent laryngeal nerve sections with subsequent fat harvest and implantation into the left true vocal cords. Three animals were killed after 48 hours and 2 after 3 weeks; their larynges were examined with light microscopy. The results of the 48-hour samples show mode-rate acute inflammation and few areas of focal necrosis. The 3-week samples show no necrotic foci, minimal foreign-body reaction, and maintenance of structur

The local lymph node assay: status of validation.

For the prediction of skin sensitization potential of substances, the local lymph node assay (LLNA) is an alternative to the widely used guinea pig tests. Over a 10-yr period this method has undergone extensive development, evaluation and validation. In this commentary, the quality of this validation is examined. It is concluded that the LLNA has successfully passed through all reasonable validation stages. It provides a reliable and relevant source of predictive skin sensitization data which, unlike results from guinea pig tests, are reproducible from laboratory to laboratory. Thus, it is now

Update on New Aspects of the Renin-Angiotensin System in Hepatic Fibrosis and Portal Hypertension: Implications for Novel Therapeutic Options.

There is considerable experimental evidence that the renin angiotensin system (RAS) plays a central role in both hepatic fibrogenesis and portal hypertension. Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), a key enzyme of the classical RAS, converts angiotensin I (Ang I) to angiotensin II (Ang II), which acts via the Ang II type 1 receptor (AT1R) to stimulate hepatic fibrosis and increase intrahepatic vascular tone and portal pressure. Inhibitors of the classical RAS, drugs which are widely used in clinical practice in patients with hypertension, have been shown to inhibit liver fibrosis in animal model

Tympanic electrocochleography: normal and abnormal patterns of response.

Electrocochleography has been widely used in human and animal studies of endolymphatic hydrops. A variety of response patterns have been reported in normal and hydropic ears. Recent clinical studies have focused almost exclusively on the amplitude ratio of the summating potential (SP) and action potential (AP) derived from alternating polarity click responses. In this report normal response patterns are described with a tympanic membrane electrode employing condensation, rarefaction and alternating polarity clicks and tone burst stimulation. A variety of response abnormalities are described in

Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 in spine surgery: recommendations for use and alternative bone substitutes-a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) has been extensively studied in preclinical, animal, and human studies and has been used widely in spine fusion surgery. Evidence demonstrates that fusion rates with rhBMP-2 are similar to or higher than those achieved with autologous bone graft. However, there have been concerns regarding the cost, optimal dosage, and potential complications of rhBMP-2 use in spine surgery. The objective of this paper is to provide a current review of the available evidence regarding rhBMP-2 and other bone graft substitutes use

Choosing between cocaine and sucrose under the influence: testing the effect of cocaine tolerance.

RATIONALE: Cocaine use not only depends on the reinforcing properties of the drug, but also on its pharmacological effects on alternative nondrug activities. In animal models investigating choice between cocaine and alternative sweet rewards, the latter influence can have a dramatic impact on choice outcomes. When choosing under cocaine influence is prevented by imposing sufficiently long intervals between choice trials, animals typically prefer the sweet reward. However, when choosing under the drug influence is permitted, animals shift their preference in favor of cocaine. OBJECTIVES: We pr
