Orthostatic intolerance and motion sickness after parabolic flight.

Because it is not clear that the induction of orthostatic intolerance in returning astronauts always requires prolonged exposure to microgravity, we investigated orthostatic tolerance and autonomic cardiovascular function in 16 healthy subjects before and after the brief micro- and hypergravity of parabolic flight. Concomitantly, we investigated the effect of parabolic flight-induced vomiting on orthostatic tolerance, R-wave-R-wave interval and arterial pressure power spectra, and carotid-cardiac baroreflex and Valsalva responses. After parabolic flight 1) 8 of 16 subjects could not tolerate 3

Spaceflight-associated pain.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Consequences of the expanding commercial spaceflight industry include an increase in total number of spaceflight participants and an accompanying surge in the average number of medical comorbidities compared with government-based astronaut corps. A sequela of these developments is an anticipated rise in acute and chronic pain concerns associated with spaceflight. This review will summarize diagnostic and therapeutic areas of interest that can support the comfort of humans in spaceflight. RECENT FINDINGS: Painful conditions that occur in space may be due to exposure to numer

Insights into spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome with review of intraocular and orbital findings.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) remains a phenomenological term, and advances in ophthalmic imaging as well as new insights from ground-based experiments have given support to new theories of how SANS develops and what may be done to counter it. RECENT FINDINGS: SANS has been postulated to arise from elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) during long-duration spaceflight (LDSF). However, recent work has shown that acute microgravity exposure does not increase ICP, and the effect of cephalad fluid shifts on ICP in microgravity remain unknown. In addition, s

Head-Mounted Dynamic Visual Acuity for G-Transition Effects During Interplanetary Spaceflight: Technology Development and Results from an Early Validation Study.

INTRODUCTION: Dynamic visual acuity (DVA) refers to the ability of the eye to discern detail in a moving object and plays an important role whenever rapid physical responses to environmental changes are required, such as while performing tasks onboard a space shuttle. A significant decrease in DVA has previously been noted after astronauts returned from long-duration spaceflight (0.75 eye chart lines, 24 h after returning from space). As part of a NASA-funded, head-mounted multimodal visual assessment system for monitoring vision changes in spaceflight, we elaborate upon the technical developm

Fine motor deficits exhibited in rat string-pulling behavior following exposure to sleep fragmentation and deep space radiation.

Deep space flight missions will expose astronauts to multiple stressors, including sleep fragmentation and space radiation. There is debate over whether sleep disruptions are an issue in deep space. While these stressors independently impair sensorimotor function, the combined effects on performance are currently unknown. String-pulling behavior involves highly organized bimanual reach-to-grasp and withdraw movements. This behavior was examined under rested wakeful conditions and immediately following one session of sleep fragmentation in Sham and irradiated rats 3 months after exposure (10 cG

Changes in the Optic Nerve Head and Choroid Over 1 Year of Spaceflight.

IMPORTANCE: While 6-month data are available regarding spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome, manned missions for 1 year and beyond are planned, warranting evaluation for spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome beyond 6 months. OBJECTIVE: To determine if the manifestation of spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome worsens during International Space Station missions exceeding the present 4- to 6-month duration. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The One-Year Mission Study used quantitative imaging modalities to investigate changes in ocular structure in 2 crew members who com

The Effect of Low Temperatures on Environmental Radiation Damage in Living Systems: Does Hypothermia Show Promise for Space Travel?

Low-temperature treatments (i.e., hypothermia) may be one way of regulating environmental radiation damage in living systems. With this in mind, hibernation under hypothermic conditions has been proposed as a useful approach for long-term human space flight. However, the underlying mechanisms of hypothermia-induced radioresistance are as yet undetermined, and the conventional risk assessment of radiation exposure during hibernation remains insufficient for estimating the effects of chronic exposure to galactic cosmic rays (GCRs). To promote scientific discussions on the application of hibernat

Hypothesis on the outflow of optic nerve cerebrospinal fluid in spaceflight associated neuro ocular syndrome.

Spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) has been well documented in astronauts. However, its pathogenesis is not fully understood. New findings indicate the impaired outflow of the optic nerve cerebrospinal fluid may participate or contribute to some changes in SANS. In this perspective, we generated a hypothesis that the outflow of cerebrospinal fluid through the optic nerve sheath may be impaired under micro-gravity and then may potentially lead to SANS-related alterations.

MicroAge mission: experimental design and hardware for a bespoke culture system supporting tissue-engineered skeletal muscle.

Microgravity provides a unique model for accelerated skeletal muscle loss and potentially muscle ageing. During spaceflight, astronauts experience pronounced muscle atrophy, similar to age-related decline on Earth but over a much shorter timescale. Despite daily aerobic and resistance exercise on the International Space Station (ISS), countermeasures remain suboptimal, reflecting similar challenges seen in ageing populations. The MicroAge Mission used microgravity on the ISS to assess whether the molecular mechanisms behind reduced adaptive responses to contractile activity during ageing resem

Simulated Microgravity Impairs Human NK Cell Cytotoxic Activity Against Space Radiation-Relevant Leukemic Cells.

Natural killer (NK) cells are important effectors of the innate immune system. Unlike T cells, NK cells do not require antigen-priming, making them an important first-line of defense against malignant cells. Because of the potential for increased cancer risk as a result of astronaut exposure to space radiation, we performed studies to determine whether conditions of microgravity present during spaceflight affects the body's natural defenses against leukemogenesis. Human NK cells were cultured for 48 hours under normal gravity and simulated microgravity (sµG), and cytotoxicity against K-562 (CM

The value of a spaceflight clinical decision support system for earth-independent medical operations.

As NASA prepares for crewed lunar missions over the next several years, plans are also underway to journey farther into deep space. Deep space exploration will require a paradigm shift in astronaut medical support toward progressively earth-independent medical operations (EIMO). The Exploration Medical Capability (ExMC) element of NASA's Human Research Program (HRP) is investigating the feasibility and value of advanced capabilities to promote and enhance EIMO. Currently, astronauts rely on real-time communication with ground-based medical providers. However, as the distance from Earth increas

Radium deposition in human brain tissue: A Geant4-DNA Monte Carlo toolkit study.

NASA has encouraged studies on 226Ra deposition in the human brain to investigate the effects of exposure to alpha particles with high linear energy transfer, which could mimic some of the exposure astronauts face during space travel. However, this approach was criticized, noting that radium is a bone-seeker and accumulates in the skull, which means that the radiation dose from alpha particles emitted by 226Ra would be heavily concentrated in areas close to cranial bones rather than uniformly distributed throughout the brain. In the high background radiation areas of Ramsar, Iran, extremely hi

Aerospace Implications of Key Neurological Conditions.

INTRODUCTION: The neurological impact (or lack thereof) of certain medical histories and imaging findings is important to understand in the context of air and spaceflight. There are a number of neurological conditions that, if present in pilots and astronauts, carry variable (and sometimes adverse) functional implications for safety and overall mission success. In this systematic overview, the authors will refer to the relevant clinical and radiological features of brain tumors and vascular anomalies, cerebral edema and intracranial hypertension, concussion and the traumatic brain injury (TBI)

Biofluid modeling of the coupled eye-brain system and insights into simulated microgravity conditions.

This work aims at investigating the interactions between the flow of fluids in the eyes and the brain and their potential implications in structural and functional changes in the eyes of astronauts, a condition also known as spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS). To this end, we propose a reduced (0-dimensional) mathematical model of fluid flow in the eyes and brain, which is embedded into a simplified whole-body circulation model. In particular, the model accounts for: (i) the flows of blood and aqueous humor in the eyes; (ii) the flows of blood, cerebrospinal fluid and intersti

Dataset for dose and time-dependent transcriptional response to ionizing radiation exposure.

Exposure to ionizing radiation associated with highly energetic and charged heavy particles is an inherent risk astronauts face in long duration space missions. We have previously considered the transcriptional effects that three levels of radiation (0.3 Gy, 1.5 Gy, and 3.0 Gy) have at an immediate time point (1 hr) post-exposure [1]. Our analysis of these results suggest effects on transcript levels that could be modulated at lower radiation doses [2]. In addition, a time dependent effect is likely to be present. Therefore, in order to develop a lab-on-a-chip approach for detection of radiati

Quantitative orientation preference and susceptibility to space motion sickness simulated in a virtual reality environment.

Orientation preference should appear when variable weightings of spatial orientation cues are used between individuals. It is possible that astronauts' orientation preferences could be a potential predictor for susceptibility to space motion sickness (SMS). The present study was conducted to confirm this relationship on Earth by quantifying orientation preferences and simulating SMS in a virtual reality environment. Two tests were carried out. The first was to quantitatively determine one's orientation preference. Thirty-two participants' vision and body cue preferences were determined by meas

Inexpensive Complex Hand Model Twenty Years Later.

Twenty years ago the author unveiled his inexpensive complex hand model, which reproduced every motion of the human hand. A control system programmed in the Forth language operated its actuators and sensors. Follow-on papers for this popular project were next presented in Texas, Canada and Germany. From this hand grew the author’s meter-tall robot (nicknamed ANNIE: Android With Neural Networks, Intellect and Emotions). It received machine vision, facial expressiveness, speech synthesis and speech recognition; a simian version also received a dexterous ape foot. New artificial intelligence feat

Kinetics of neutrophils in mice exposed to radiation and/or granulocyte colony-stimulating factor treatment.

Astronauts have the potential to develop the hematopoietic syndrome as a result of exposure to radiation from a solar particle event (SPE) during exploration class missions. This syndrome is characterized by a reduction in the number of circulating blood cells (cytopenias). In the present study the effects of SPE-like proton and γ radiation on the kinetics of circulating neutrophils were evaluated during a one-month time period using mice as a model system. The results revealed that exposure to a 2 Gy dose of either SPE-like proton or γ radiation significantly decreased the number of circulati

A re-investigation of the role of utricular asymmetries in Space Motion Sickness.

During the first days of spaceflight, about 50-70% of the astronauts experience symptoms of Space Motion Sickness (SMS). It has been proposed that an asymmetry between the left and right otolith organs contributes to an astronaut's individual susceptibility. A recently developed test to measure unilateral utricular function enabled us to re-investigate this so-called otolith asymmetry hypothesis, while using the paradigm of sustained centrifugation as a ground based model for SMS. This latter paradigm has been shown to elicit symptoms similar to those of SMS and is referred to as Sickness Indu

Intrathecal ligaments and nerve root tension: possible sources of lumbar pain during spaceflight.

UNLABELLED: Lumbar intrathecal ligaments have recently been demonstrated to randomly bind dorsal nerve roots to the dura within the lumbar vertebral column. Lengthening of the vertebral column and associated lumbar back pain experienced by astronauts is common in microgravity. This study was designed to investigate the relationship of lumbar intrathecal ligaments in spinal lengthening as a possible mechanism for back pain. METHODS: A two-part study was designed using 36 vertebral columns from embalmed cadavers. There were 12 vertebral columns studied in mid-sagittal section to demonstrate the
