Neurophysiologic bases of speech discrimination.

The mismatch negativity (MMN) is an automatic cortical evoked potential that signifies the brain's detection of acoustic change. In other words, the MMN reflects the neurophysiologic processes that underlie auditory discrimination. As such, the MMN provides an objective tool for evaluating central auditory mechanisms involved in speech perception. We are using the MMN to study the central auditory processes that encode acoustic changes important for speech perception in 1) normal-hearing adults and children, 2) individuals with impaired auditory systems (including persons with learning disabil

Musical experience enhances time discrimination: Evidence from cortical responses.

Time discrimination, a critical aspect of auditory perception, is influenced by numerous factors. Previous research has suggested that musical experience can restructure the brain, thereby enhancing time discrimination. However, this phenomenon remains underexplored. In this study, we seek to elucidate the enhancing effect of musical experience on time discrimination, utilizing both behavioral and electroencephalogram methodologies. Additionally, we aim to explore, through brain connectivity analysis, the role of increased connectivity in brain regions associated with auditory perception as a

Use of audiovisual information in speech perception by prelingually deaf children with cochlear implants: a first report.

OBJECTIVE: Although there has been a great deal of recent empirical work and new theoretical interest in audiovisual speech perception in both normal-hearing and hearing-impaired adults, relatively little is known about the development of these abilities and skills in deaf children with cochlear implants. This study examined how prelingually deafened children combine visual information available in the talker's face with auditory speech cues provided by their cochlear implants to enhance spoken language comprehension. DESIGN: Twenty-seven hearing-impaired children who use cochlear implants id

Neural Noise Hypothesis of Developmental Dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia (decoding-based reading disorder; RD) is a complex trait with multifactorial origins at the genetic, neural, and cognitive levels. There is evidence that low-level sensory-processing deficits precede and underlie phonological problems, which are one of the best-documented aspects of RD. RD is also associated with impairments in integrating visual symbols with their corresponding speech sounds. Although causal relationships between sensory processing, print-speech integration, and fluent reading, and their neural bases are debated, these processes all require precise timi

Functional imaging of the auditory system: the use of positron emission tomography.

Modern brain imaging methods now afford unprecedented opportunities for the in vivo study of central auditory system function. Positron emission tomography (PET) has been used as a functional imaging technique for more than 15 years to study the distribution of cerebral haemodynamic changes associated with auditory stimulation, in subjects with normal and abnormal auditory function. Many of these studies concern processes related to, but not identical with, audition, such as speech perception, melodic processing and directed attention. Additionally, PET has been used to explore auditory percep

The Effects of Duration and Level on Spectral Modulation Perception.

Purpose Spectral modulation detection is an increasingly common assay of suprathreshold auditory perception and has been correlated with speech perception performance. Here, the potential effects of stimulus duration and stimulus presentation level on spectral modulation detection were investigated. Method Spectral modulation detection thresholds were measured as a function of modulation frequency in young, normal-hearing listeners. The standard stimulus was a bandpass noise, and signal stimuli were created by superimposing sinusoidal spectral modulation on the bandpass noise carrier. The modu

Investigation of the neural substrates of voice recognition in Chinese schizophrenic patients with auditory verbal hallucinations: an event-related functional MRI study.

OBJECTIVE: Auditory hallucinations (AVHs), like real auditory perceptions, are often perceived as familiar voices. Given that neural correlates of AVHs involve the auditory cortex, it is likely that those brain regions responsible for recognition of voice identity are invoked during AVHs. METHOD: Schizophrenic patients with (n = 13) and without (n = 13) auditory hallucinations, and 13 healthy subjects performed a voice recognition task during functional magnetic resonance imaging at 1.5 T. In the task using prerecorded vocal stimuli, they classified voice as familiar and unfamiliar. RESULTS:

Perception Versus Comprehension of Bound Morphemes in Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing: The Pivotal Role of Form-Meaning Mapping.

PURPOSE: Bound morphemes are challenging for children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) to acquire and to use successfully. The challenge arises in part from limited access to spoken word forms as a result of reduced audibility during perception, but successful comprehension requires access to both the morphological forms and the mapping between these forms and their meanings. This study investigated the relationship between perception and comprehension of bound morphemes in order to assess the impact of form-meaning mapping on performance. METHOD: Seventy-eight elementary school-age chi

Simulated transient hearing loss improves auditory sensitivity.

Recently, it was proposed that a processing principle called adaptive stochastic resonance plays a major role in the auditory system, and serves to maintain optimal sensitivity even to highly variable sound pressure levels. As a side effect, in case of reduced auditory input, such as permanent hearing loss or frequency specific deprivation, this mechanism may eventually lead to the perception of phantom sounds like tinnitus or the Zwicker tone illusion. Using computational modeling, the biological plausibility of this processing principle was already demonstrated. Here, we provide experimental

Top-Down Auditory Plasticity: Acceptable Noise Level Predicts and Reflects the Effect of Perceptual Learning in Experience-Induced Plasticity.

OBJECTIVE: In the auditory system, tinnitus and superior speech perception in noise are examples of negative and positive plasticity that can result from sensory neural hearing loss and life experiences dealing with more complex stimuli and learning, respectively. The main objective of this study was to determine the relationship between acceptable noise level (ANL) values and perceptual learning in individuals exposed to unavoidable occupational noise. MATERIALS & METHODS: Here we document a form of plasticity in top-down auditory pathways through the measurement of the acceptable noise leve

Association between auditory and visual symptoms of unilateral spatial neglect.

Unilateral spatial neglect due to right brain damage (RBD) can occur in several different sensory modalities in the same patient. Previous studies of the association between auditory and visual neglect have yielded conflicting outcomes. Most such studies have compared performance on relatively simple clinical measures of visual neglect, such as target cancellation, with that on more sophisticated measures of auditory perception. This is problematic because such tasks are typically not matched for the cognitive processes they exercise. We overcame this limitation by using equivalent visual and

Functional Hearing Difficulties in Blast-Exposed Service Members With Normal to Near-Normal Hearing Thresholds.

OBJECTIVES: Estimated prevalence of functional hearing and communication deficits (FHCDs), characterized by abnormally low speech recognition and binaural tone detection in noise or an abnormally high degree of self-perceived hearing difficulties, dramatically increases in active-duty service members (SMs) who have hearing thresholds slightly above the normal range and self-report to have been close to an explosive blast. Knowing the exact nature of the underlying auditory-processing deficits that contribute to FHCD would not only provide a better characterization of the effects of blast expos

Tinnitus Perception in Light of a Parietal Operculo-Insular Involvement: A Review.

In tinnitus literature, researchers have increasingly been advocating for a clearer distinction between tinnitus perception and tinnitus-related distress. In non-bothersome tinnitus, the perception itself can be more specifically investigated: this has provided a body of evidence, based on resting-state and activation fMRI protocols, highlighting the involvement of regions outside the conventional auditory areas, such as the right parietal operculum. Here, we aim to conduct a review of available investigations of the human parietal operculo-insular subregions conducted at the microscopic, meso

Modelling relations between sensory processing, speech perception, orthographic and phonological ability, and literacy achievement.

The general magnocellular theory postulates that dyslexia is the consequence of a multimodal deficit in the processing of transient and dynamic stimuli. In the auditory modality, this deficit has been hypothesized to interfere with accurate speech perception, and subsequently disrupt the development of phonological and later reading and spelling skills. In the visual modality, an analogous problem might interfere with literacy development by affecting orthographic skills. In this prospective longitudinal study, we tested dynamic auditory and visual processing, speech-in-noise perception, phono

Haptic-Sound Analysis of Materials' Clustering Based on Tool Tip Tapping Exploration.

Tapping surfaces with a tool tip elicits both sound and haptic information. Sound and haptic information is captured by a microphone and an accelerometer attached to the tip, respectively. In relation to the task of distinguishing objects, this paper investigates the following two questions: (1) how do both the signals (sound and acceleration) help us to assess the surface individually? (2) How does the integration of both modalities affect this assessment? We approach the problem of texture assessment as an unsupervised learning problem. For this purpose, perceptual filter banks are designed

Neurobehavioral characteristics and symptomatic correlations of audiovisual multisensory integration in schizophrenia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Multisensory integration (MSI) avoids cognitive overload, and the traditional all-or-nothing perspective for dysfunctional MSI in schizophrenia has been increasingly challenged. This study aimed to systematically review and meta-analyze extant evidence on audiovisual MSI in schizophrenia. METHODS: We searched Web of Science, PubMed, PsycINFO and PsycARTICLES databases from inception until April 16th, 2024. Studies using appropriate audiovisual integration tasks to compare either behavioral or neural responses between schizophrenia individuals and healthy controls were included. Pr

Assessing visual modulation along the human subcortical auditory pathway.

Experience of the world is inherently multisensory. It has been suggested that audiovisual modulation occurs as early as subcortical auditory stages. However, this was based on the frequency-following response, a measure recently found to be significantly generated from cortical sources. It therefore remains unclear whether subcortical auditory processing can indeed be modulated by visual information. We aimed to trace visual modulation along the auditory pathway by comparing auditory brainstem response (ABR) and middle-latency response (MLR) between unimodal auditory and multimodal audiovisua

[Experiences with the implantation of a multichannel electrode in the acoustic nerve].

The authors developed a surgical approach to the acoustic nerve enabling the introduction of an electrode into the acoustic nerve. A multichannel electrode was implanted by this method in a deaf patient. The receiver casing for percutaneous transmission was fixed in the mastoid. Encouraging hearing results were obtained over a period of two months by electrical stimulation of the acoustic nerve.
