[Tests for anthropozoonoses in sera of farmers in eastern-Austria. I. Communication (author's transl)].

Because of human disease and the evidence of antibodies in domestic- and wild animal-sera, human sera were tested for various anthropozoonoses in three districts of the so called "Seewinkel" (Eastern-Austria). Positive reactions were found for listeriosis, tularemia, leptospirosis, ornithosis, Q-fever, rickettsiae of the RMSF-group "Stamm B", mycoplasmosis, TBE-(FSME-), Sindbis-, West Nil-VIRUS. These results are indicators for the occurrence of the pathogens and are supported by the positive results already found at serological tests of domestic and wild animals.

Diversity in Carbapenemases in Enterobacterales in Southeastern Austria Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly influenced healthcare systems and infection control worldwide, with important implications for the epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance. This study examined the prevalence and characteristics of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) isolates in Southeastern Austria from 2018 to 2022 to assess potential pandemic-related effects. A total of 63 isolates were analyzed using phenotypic and molecular methods, including carbapenemase detection, genotyping, and multilocus sequence typing. The number of CRE isolates appeared to decline during the pandemic

No evidence of asymptomatic monkeypox infection in a highly sexually active MSM population in Austria.

BACKGROUND: The 2022 outbreak of monkeypox virus (MPXV) revealed new transmission routes. Incidence declined sharply in September 2022, and it remains unclear whether MPXV is circulating in asymptomatic individuals because of increased immunity. OBJECTIVES: Our study aimed to assesss the number of asymtomatic MPXV carriers in individuals at high risk for STI. METHODS: We analysed anal samples from asymptomatic highly sexually active men who have sex with men for the presence of MPXV. RESULTS: We detected a high number of concomitant sexually transmitted infections but did not find a single

Immunization status in patients with multiple sclerosis: A cross-sectional, monocenter study in Austria.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) under certain disease-modifying therapies (DMT) show a higher risk of infection and a lower immune response to vaccination. Hence, assessing immunization status prior to DMT start and, where necessary, performing vaccinations is  recommended. We aimed to determine the immunization status in MS patients and to identify factors associated with low vaccination rates. METHODS: Patients with MS who were seen at the MS clinic of the Medical University of Innsbruck throughout a period of 14 months in 2020 and 2021 were eligible for inclus

Prevalence of selected sexually transmitted infectious agents in a cohort of asymptomatic soldiers in Austria.

BACKGROUND: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than one million sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are acquired every day worldwide. Although STIs may be asymptomatic in many cases, they can cause severe symptoms and can also lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes and both male and female infertility. Asymptomatic carriers seem to play an important role in terms of the distribution of STIs; however, studies revealing the prevalence of STIs in asymptomatic individuals are rare. METHODS: In the current study, 654 leftovers of standard urine samples from healthy, asymptomatic

Epidemiology of Antepartum Stillbirths in Austria-A Population-Based Study between 2008 and 2020.

(1) Background: Across Europe, the incidence of antepartum stillbirth varies greatly, partly because of heterogeneous definitions regarding gestational weeks and differences in legislation. With this study, we sought to provide a comprehensive overview on the demographics of antepartum stillbirth in Austria, defined as non-iatrogenic fetal demise ≥22+0 gestational weeks (/40). (2) Methods: We conducted a population-based study on epidemiological characteristics of singleton antepartum stillbirth in Austria between January 2008 and December 2020. Data were derived from the validated Austrian Bi

Diversity of West Nile and Usutu virus strains in mosquitoes at an international airport in Austria.

Increased globalization and international transportation have resulted in the inadvertent introduction of exotic mosquitoes and new mosquito-borne diseases. International airports are among the possible points of entry for mosquitoes and their pathogens. We established a mosquito and mosquito-borne diseases monitoring programme at the largest international airport in Austria and report the results for the first two years, 2018 and 2019. This included weekly monitoring and sampling of adult mosquitoes, and screening them for the presence of viral nucleic acids by standard molecular diagnostic t

Wherefrom and whereabouts of an alien: the American liver fluke Fascioloides magna in Austria: an overview.

The giant liver fluke Fascioloides magna, an invasive species originating from North America, was recorded in Austria in the wild for the first time in 2000. Since then, various data concerning the epidemiology in snail intermediate hosts and cervid final hosts have been reported. Galba truncatula acts as snail intermediate host, and red deer, roe deer and fallow deer act as final hosts. G. truncatula is abundant throughout the region, especially along muddy shores of slow-flowing branches of the river system. Prevalence in deer (20-100 %) is much higher than in snails (0.03-0.2 %). Despite me
