Extensor tendon repair: a reconstructive technique.

Extensor tendon injuries are commonly encountered and are frequently treated with less regard than flexor tendon injuries. However, several factors make them as difficult to treat and more prone to suture line rupture than their palmar counterparts. A technique is described to protect a tendon juncture on the back of the hand following tendon disruption. This allows early finger motion to prevent joint stiffness while preventing suture line disruption.

Ergonomics in Dermatologic Procedures: Mobility Exercises to Incorporate In and Out of the Office.

Dermatologists-particularly dermatologic surgeons-commonly experience neck, shoulder, and back pain due to prolonged static positions and repetitive motions inherent in their practice. Musculoskeletal injuries not only can impact career longevity and satisfaction but also can affect the quality of patient care provided. We highlight mobility techniques and exercises that dermatologic surgeons can incorporate both in and outside the procedure room to reduce pain and prevent future injuries.

Iatrogenic superior gluteal mononeuropathy.

Injuries to the superior gluteal nerve (SGN) have been reported as a result of trauma, pyriformis muscle entrapment, injections, and lumbar lordosis and inadequate back stabilization. We report 3 patients who developed isolated SGN injuries, 1 after a partial nephrectomy and 2 following revision of a total hip arthroplasty. SGN should be suspected in anyone developing an abnormal gait after hip or pelvic surgery or after prolonged lateral decubitus positioning.

Moderate exosuit use reduces the incidence of back discomfort in logistic warehouse workers: a randomised controlled trial with an exploratory dose-stratified analysis.

Evidence on whether exosuits reduce workplace injuries is mixed. We studied whether exosuits can reduce back discomfort among warehouse workers. Ninety-seven participants were randomised to a control or exosuit group; for exploratory analysis, exosuit participants were stratified as moderate or low users. Surveys at baseline and four follow-ups assessed workplace discomfort, perceived back effort, usability, and adverse events. Intention-to-treat analysis showed that exosuit users had no difference in back discomfort intensity and incidence than the control group. However, exosuit users did ha

Head impact contact points for restrained child occupants.

OBJECTIVE: Head injuries are the most common injuries sustained by children in motor vehicle crashes regardless of age, restraint, and crash direction. For rear seat occupants, the interaction of the subject with the seat back and the vehicle side interior structures has been previously highlighted. In order to advance this knowledge to the development of countermeasures, a summary of vehicle components that contributed to these injuries is needed. Therefore, the objective of this study was to create a contact map of the vehicle interior for head and face injuries to rear-seated restrained chi

Frequency of relevant back pain two years after trauma and the effect on health-related quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Persisting back pain is a frequent consequence after severe trauma including injury to the spine. Reports on the incidence and relevance of back pain in severely injured patients in the absence of direct injury to the spine are scarce. OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency of relevant back pain and its effect on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in trauma patients with spine injury compared to patients without direct impact to spine postdischarge and two years after trauma within an observational study. METHODS: A two-year follow-up survey by using the Polytrauma Outcome Chart

Occupational hazards in female ballet dancers. Advocate for a forgotten population.

1. Personal, economical, psychological, and physical factors increase a ballet dancer's stress, which can result in a higher risk for injuries. 2. Ballet dancers experience injuries to the foot, ankle, knee, hip, or back. The constant fear of injuries is universal among dancers because injuries can lead to permanent disability and the end of their ballet career. 3. Although early treatment of injuries is critical, there are multiple barriers to receiving treatment. Some of the barriers include misunderstanding from the health care community, cost of treatment, time constraints, fear of unemplo

[Approach to the athlete with low back pain].

Low back pain is a common symptom in athletes, hindering their activity. The etiology is tightly linked to the type of sport, often a consequence of repetitive movements, high pressures and strain being applied to the spine and adjacent muscular and ligamentous structures and a high degree of activity. The diagnosis is the key and causes are usually not severe. However, some red flags may indicate a more serious origin. Treatment is mostly conservative and based on functional therapies with the goal of a rapid and secure return to sports. As such, sedentary lifestyle should be avoided.

Post traumatic retroperitoneal fibrosis as a cause of low-back pain.

We present the case of a male patient with post traumatic retroperitoneal fibrosis whose main clinical expression was low-back pain. Diagnosis was established using CAT-scan and MRI, which revealed a large mass of soft tissue that almost entirely enveloped the abdominal aorta. Treatment with 40 mg of prednisone every 24 hours was established. This dose was reduced gradually, and progressive remission of clinical signs and symptoms was achieved, with a significant improvement of subsequent imaging-test results. Treatment was continued for one year. Two and a half years later the patient remains

Spine injuries in the sport of gymnastics.

Injury in gymnastics is not an uncommon occurrence, and an injury of the spine frequently is a source of pain in a gymnast. Because of the unique demands of this sport, which repetitively place significant forces across the spine, it becomes clear why the spine commonly is injured. Potential causes of back pain in a gymnast include spondylolysis, Scheuermann's disease, intervertebral disc pathology, and mechanical sources of pain. Much of the diagnostic workup and management of spondylolysis lesions remains controversial, but a successful management strategy can be developed for the safe retur

Gymnastic injuries.

In the past 15 to 20 years gymnastics has become very popular. The increased participation exposes a greater number of athletes to potential injury. The risk of gymnastic injuries seems to be proportional to the level of the athletes; the higher the level of gymnastics, the more hours are spent in practice, with a greater exposure time. With the increased risk in gymnastics, the incidence of acute injuries will also increase, and as the skill level increases, the load during the workout will also increase, providing more opportunity for chronic injuries. As in many sports, the ankle is the mos

Exploring the Epidemiology of Injuries in Athletes of the Olympic Winter Games: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

This study sought to provide a comprehensive assessment of the incidence of sports injuries among athletes participating in the Olympic Winter Games and to investigate contributing factors. We gathered injury data from athletes participating in the recent four Olympic Winter Games, incorporating details on the sports event, sex, injury location, and type. Through a meta-analysis, we calculated the injury incidence rates for each sport and examined the influence of sex and the type of sport on these incidence rates. Out of 11,197 registered athletes, we documented 1,304 sports injuries. The spo

Soldier occupational load carriage: a narrative review of associated injuries.

This narrative review examines injuries sustained by soldiers undertaking occupational load carriage tasks. Military soldiers are required to carry increasingly heavier occupational loads. These loads have been found to increase the physiological cost to the soldier and alter their gait mechanics. Aggregated research findings suggest that the lower limbs are the most frequent anatomical site of injury associated with load carriage. While foot blisters are common, other prevalent lower limb injuries include stress fractures, knee and foot pain, and neuropathies, like digitalgia and meralgia. Sh

The prevalence and impact of overuse injuries in five Norwegian sports: Application of a new surveillance method.

Little is known about the true extent and severity of overuse injuries in sport, largely because of methodological challenges involved in recording them. This study assessed the prevalence of overuse injuries among Norwegian athletes from five sports using a newly developed method designed specifically for this purpose. The Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center Overuse Injury Questionnaire was distributed weekly by e-mail to 45 cross-country skiers, 98 cyclists, 50 floorball players, 55 handball players, and 65 volleyball players for 13 weeks. The prevalence of overuse problems at the shoulder, l

[Injuries and damage caused by excessive stress in classical ballet].

Typical injuries of highly professional classical ballet dancers were evaluated in 108 members of German opera companies. We demonstrated the predominance of overuse-syndromes to acute injuries related to the excessive training-extends. Disorders of the feet, particularly tendinitis followed by low-back pain, chondromalacia patellae, jumpers knee, shin splints and muscle strains are most frequent. Considerable time often elapsed before diagnosing was made because complaints were ignored by dancers. Our inquiry includes range of motion of the spine and the extremities, serial x-rays and a syste
